In Kentucky, United States, at least four to six people have been shot along a highway in a shooter incident, authorities reported on Saturday (Sep 7). Police are hunting for a suspect considered "armed and dangerous".

The latest shooting incident in America has taken place on Interstate 75,a major cross-country travel routenear London, Kentucky.

At around 6 p.m. (2200 GMT), about nine miles outside of London, officers were called to the scene after reports of multiple shots fired at the I-75 in Laurel County.

The highway was shut from both ends due to the "active shooter situation". As per the news agency Reuters, the shots came from a wooden area or an overpass. The number of shots fired and the nature of the injuries are not yet clear.

Suspect'armed and dangerous'

However, according to news agency AFP, authorities are hunting for a suspect identified as 32-year-old Joseph Couch.

Couch, a person of interest in the shooting, is considered "armed and dangerous," said the sheriff's office in a post on Facebook.

"Do not attempt to approach," it warned.

Kentucky State Police spokesperson Scottie Pennington posted on Facebook, "The suspect has not been caught at this time. We are urging people to stay inside!"

In a conversation with the Louisville Courier Journal, "We have no clue where (the suspect) is at."

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear asked people to avoid the area that had been shut down. "Kentucky, we are aware of a shooting on I-75 in Laurel County. Please avoid the area. We will provide more details once they are available," he said.

Calling the shooting a "critical incident," the LouisvilleBureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on X said its agentshave been called in to assist the Kentucky State Police and local law enforcement.

This latest incident of shooting comes just days after the Georgia high school shooting by a 14-year-old student that claimed the lives of two students and two teachers, as nine others were injured.
