US splash pad shooting: Suspect who injured at least nine died by suicide, say cops

The suspect who opened fire at a splash pad inRochester Hills, Michigan, injuring at least nine people has died by suicide, the news agency Associated Press reported on Sunday (June 16) citing police.
Addressing a press conference earlier,Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said on Saturday evening that the suspect pulled up to theBrooklands Plaza Splash Pad,exited a vehicle, and opened fire roughly 20 feet away, reloading multiple times.
Sheriff Bouchard said the suspect fired potentially 28 times. He added that the wounded victims were transported to multiple hospitals with varying kinds of injuries.The victims included an eight-year-old boy who was reported to be in a critical condition.

Bouchard did not have detailson the extent of the injuries but he said that one person was out of surgery and was doing well.
Authorities find handgun at scene
The first call alerting police about the incident at theBrooklands Plaza Splash Pad was made at around 5.11 pm local time, CNN reported.
Authorities found ahandgun and three empty magazines at the scene.
During the press conference, Bouchard also pointed out that the incident appeared to be random and authorities were yet to determine a motivation for the attack.
Suspect contained in home near crime scene
Before he committed suicide, the suspect was contained at a house withina half mile from the crime scene. The house was surrounded by police, andBouchard said that authorities were bringing inadditional assets, including SWAT teams and armoured vehicles.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the incident.
In a post on X, Governor Whitmer said, "I am heartbroken to learn about the shooting in Rochester Hills. We are monitoring the situation as updates continue to come in, and are in touch with local officials."
