Human shield? Israeli forces strap wounded Palestinian on hood of military vehicle during West Bank raid

Palestinian man strapped to Israeli military jeep

Israeli forces strapped a wounded Palestinian man to the hood of their military jeep during a raid in the West Bank city of Jenin on Saturday (Jun 22), a move some observers said was an attempt tocreate a human shield. The Israeli military acknowledged the incident after a video surfaced on social media and said that its forces violated protocol.

The Palestinian man, later identified Jenin resident Mujahed Azmi, was said to have been shot and detained following an exchange of fire as the Israeli forces believed he was involved in the gun battle.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) in a statement said that the man was later transferred to medics for treatment.

Azmi’s family told Reuters that there was an arrest raid during which he was injured and when they asked for an ambulance, the army took Mujahed, strapped him on the hood and drove off.

IDF says investigating soldiers involved

According to Israeli media reports, the IDF personnel were in the midst of an operation in the Wadi Burqin area near the city of Jenin to detain wanted Palestinians.

The IDF said that their soldiers violated military protocol and would launch an investigation into their actions.

“The suspect was taken by the forces while tied on top of a vehicle,” said the Israeli military in a statement.

“The conduct seen in the video is inconsistent with IDF orders and what is expected of its soldiers,” said the IDF.It added that the “incident is being investigated and will be dealt with accordingly.”

Surge of violence in West Bank

Since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, there has also been a surge of violence in the West Bank where Israeli forces conduct near-daily, often deadly, raids.

Violence in the West Bank, which was already on the rise before the war, also escalated due to rampages by Jewish settlers in Palestinian villages and deadly Palestinian street attacks.

Earlier this month, the United Nations said more than 500 Palestinians, mostly children, have been killed in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since the beginning of the war triggered by Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel.
