Syrian state media had said the US was responsible for the air strike on Tayfur airport but it was swiftly denied by Pentagon.

After reports emerged of attacks on Syrian military base, the Russian army accused Israel of carrying out the strikes.

The Russian media quoting the Russian defence ministry said: "Two F-15 planes of the Israeli army hit the airbase between 03:25 am and 03:53 am Moscow time (0025 GMT and 0053 GMT) with the help of eight missiles controlled remotely from Lebanese territory, without entering Syrian air space."

Syrian state TV reported loud explosions near the T-4 airfield in the desert east of Homs in the early hours of Monday. It said the airfield was targeted with several missiles and that the Syrian air defence was responding and had shot down eight incoming missiles.

Earlier, Syrian state media had said the US was responsible for the air strike on Tayfur airport but it was swiftly denied by Pentagon.

"At this time, the Department of Defense is not conducting air strikes in Syria," a Pentagon spokesman said.

Tensions in Syria have risen over the weekend after reports of chemical attack being carried by the Assad regime in arebel-held town called Douma.

French president Macron condemned the incident and later called President Trump to discuss the alleged attack.

Trump said the Assad regime had a "big price to pay" over the attack.
