Driver dies after crashing car into White House gate, US Secret Service investigation underway

The US Secret Service said that a driver died after slamming a car into the White House's exterior gate late Saturday (May 4).
"Shortly before 10:30pm on May 4th, a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed collided with an outer perimeter gate on the White House complex. Security protocols were implemented as officers cleared the vehicle and attempted to render aid to the driver who was discovered deceased," US Secret Service statement read.
"There was no threat to the White House. The fatal crash portion of this will be turned over to the Washington Metropolitan Police Department Crash Investigation Unit and the Secret Service investigationcontinues," the statement added.
According to Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service has initiated an investigation into the deadly crash, in collaboration with the District of Columbia's police and fire departments.

The car hit a security barrier near the junction of Pennsylvania Avenue NW and 15th Street, according to the Washington Metropolitan Police Department. The metro police stated in a statement shared on social media, "At this time, the incident is being investigated only as a traffic crash by MPD's Major Crash Investigations Unit."
The Secret Service stated that although security measures were put in place, the White House was not under danger. The Secret Service said that while it would continue to look into the incident, it will hand over the investigation into the crash to the metro police.
Authorities nabbed another guy in January after he rammed his vehicle into the White House's external gate. The White House has seen a number of high-profile trespassing incidents in recent years, necessitating the installation of a higher, sturdier metal fence around White House's perimeter in 2020.
