US President Donald Trump said Monday (October 5) that he will not use taxpayer money further to fund a series of promotional television ads, but will instead pay for them with funds raised for MAGA, Inc., the pro-Trump super PAC. Trump's decision comes after Republicans and Democrats alike have questioned the administration’s multimillion-dollar television advertising effort. However, the White House has defended the spots as public service announcements. “The Radical Left is upset with the fact that I am taking Ads, which I consider to be a positive promotion for our Great U.S.A., and paying for them with U.S.A. money. This is a rather standard thing to do but, rather than doing that, although nothing will make them happy, I have decided to do the Patriotic Ads, among others, and pay for them myself, and with money I raised for MAGA, Inc. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.&nbsp;Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/what-is-britannia-shield-uk-conservatives-promise-new-air-defence-system-1791272572021">What is ‘Britannia Shield’? Although the ads vary in theme, many share common elements: footage of the president, audio clips of favourable news coverage, and patriotic visuals such as a graduation cap toss at a military ceremony, fireworks lighting up Mount Rushmore, and military flyovers.<h3>Pro-Trump meme group</h3>According to several media reports, Trump has been closely involved in the project, including choosing the imagery and footage himself. Two of his advisers said the White House video team, a unit within the communications office that handles the administration's public messaging, has been producing the ads in-house, though at least one came from a pro-Trump meme group. Watchdog organisations argue the ads clearly break appropriations law, which bars the use of federal money for propaganda or partisan messaging. It remains uncertain, however, whether outside groups have the legal standing to sue. The ads have drawn criticism from both parties, but Congress, which these groups saw as best positioned to hold the administration accountable, took no action to stop them before the midterms.

Andrew Bailey, FBI co-Deputy Director, has resigned on Monday (September 28) after a short and tumultuous period sharing the duties as No. 2 to Kash Patel, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. He served as Republican attorney general and is also a strong supporter of President Donald Trump. Citing anonymous sources, Bloomberg confirmed that the resignation takes effect October 2. The report also indicates that his resignation was an internal personnel decision. About his departure, Bailey said in a post on social media, “I am confident Director Patel will continue to reform the FBI, combat violent crime, defend the homeland, ensure strong organisational accountability, and restore public trust in this institution of excellence.”&nbsp;Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/mojtaba-khamenei-says-enemy-forces-will-soon-be-driven-out-of-arabian-sea-1790598022820">EU seeks more warships for Red Sea mission as Bab al-Mandeb security worsens</a> Bailey's departure comes after several agents and veteran FBI officials have been removed or pushed out following their role in cases that displeased the White House. He is stepping down just three days after the bureau reassigned two senior counterterrorism supervisors over how they handled an investigation into allegedly harassing phone calls to Katie Miller, wife of senior White House aide Stephen Miller. Bailey had shared the deputy director role with Christopher Raia, a former head of the FBI's New York field office. Raia himself took the post after Dan Bongino, the Trump administration's original choice for the job, stepped down in January. US President Donald Trump has extended the H-1B visa petitions for another year, imposing a $100,000 payment and continuing the controversial immigration restriction until September 21, 2027. The development unfolded as legal challenges continue in US courts. In response, the White House said Trump had increased the executive order behind the fee, issued in September 2025, which was set to expire this month. The H-1B programme authorises US employers to employ skilled workers from different countries, including technology professionals, for several years. The extension plays a significant role for Indian professionals as it covers the largest share of approved H-1B beneficiaries by country of birth.&nbsp;Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iran-rebuilding-nuclear-facilities-new-satellite-images-show-tehran-may-be-rapidly-restoring-bombed-parchin-taleghan-2-under-cover-of-tarpaulin-1789807891009">Iran rebuilding nuclear facilities? The White House said the original proclamation, issued in September 2025, aimed at curbing what the administration called abuses of the H-1B system, particularly by IT staffing and outsourcing firms. The proclamation alleged that some companies had used H-1B workers to fill lower-paying roles and, in certain cases, subsequently moved those jobs overseas. According to the administration, this practice had helped suppress wages and made it harder for some US workers and recent STEM graduates to secure employment. The administration also noted that more than 700 petitions have incurred the $100,000 fee since the restriction took effect on September 21, 2025.&nbsp;Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-will-receive-xi-at-airport-during-his-state-visit-full-schedule-released-1789809288433">Trump will receive Xi at airport during his state visit. The United States has announced new visa restrictions targeting certain South African nationals. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the policy applies to individuals involved in or supporting alleged race-based discrimination, incitement of violence and uncompensated land seizures in South Africa. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested a 21-year-old Pennsylvania man after an investigation uncovered what federal authorities described as an imminent ISIS-inspired "mass casualty attack". The arrest was made before the alleged mass casualty event could be carried out.The suspect, identified as Jonathan Kramer, from Valencia, was arrested on Saturday (Sep 12) outside a hotel in Cranberry Township, around 25 miles north of Pittsburgh. Investigators said he was carrying a rifle, ammunition, and dozens of knives.<h2>FBI says suspect was preparing for violence</h2>According to the FBI, the suspect had alleged allegiance to the Islamic State of Syria and had even taken steps to promote the group's ideology.Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday (Sep 15), Richard Evanchec, special agent in charge of the FBI's Pittsburgh field office, described Kramer as a sustained supporter of the Islamic State. "Jonathan Kramer demonstrated a sustained devotion to the Islamic State of Syria," Evanchec said. He said Kramer had recorded a pledge of allegiance, distributed the group's propaganda, and shared methods for carrying out killings.US Attorney Troy Rivetti said investigators believed Kramer was moving forward with his "radical ideology".Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/gravitas/ex-cia-officer-caught-with-gold-bars-worth-40-million-seeks-plea-deal-gravitas-1789494058438">Ex-CIA officer caught with gold bars worth $40mn seeks plea deal | Gravitas</a><h2>What was the target?</h2>Officials did not disclose what specific target, location, or date had allegedly been planned. However, according to federal investigators, agents were watching Kramer on September 12 when he left his home carrying a backpack.He took an Uber to a Walmart in Gibsonia, where authorities said he met another person and removed a long black bag from a vehicle. Investigators believed the bag could contain a rifle.Kramer then travelled by Uber to a hotel in Cranberry Township, paying $450 in cash for a one-week stay.Agents said they later followed him to Dunham's Sports, where he was seen at the firearms counter. After he returned to the hotel, the FBI arrested him.<h2>'I cant live In constant Fear'</h2>A search of the hotel room and Kramer's home allegedly uncovered a semi-automatic rifle, loaded magazines, a rifle scope, ammunition, around 190 rounds, 30 knives and a note.The note told people not to look for him and included the words: “I cant live In constant Fear.”The FBI said social media and encrypted communications provided further information about the alleged plot. Evanchec said Kramer had repeatedly tried to encourage and coordinate violence through encrypted platforms. Investigators said the discussions included attack methods involving firearms, vehicles, drones and chemical poisons."Following that pledge, he made efforts to spread their propaganda and shared ways to kill all in the name of a foreign terrorist organization," Evanchec said.Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/top-military-commanders-from-us-israel-and-7-arab-nations-held-secret-meeting-on-iran-war-1789503060237">Top military commanders from US, Israel, and 7 Arab nations held secret meeting on Iran War</a><h2>Public tip helped trigger investigation</h2>Federal prosecutors said the investigation began after a member of the public reported Kramer's behaviour to authorities. The FBI says it stopped an alleged ISIS-inspired mass-casualty attack before it could happen. A 21-year-old Pennsylvania man was arrested with a rifle, ammunition and dozens of knives as investigators tracked what they say was an escalating plot.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested a 21-year-old Pennsylvania man after an investigation uncovered what federal authorities described as an imminent ISIS-inspired "mass casualty attack". The arrest was made before the alleged mass casualty event could be carried out. The suspect, identified as Jonathan Kramer, from Valencia, was arrested on Saturday (Sep 12) outside a hotel in Cranberry Township, around 25 miles north of Pittsburgh. Investigators said he was carrying a rifle, ammunition, and dozens of knives. FBI says suspect was preparing for violence According to the FBI, the suspect had alleged allegiance to the Islamic State of Syria and had even taken steps to promote the group's ideology. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday (Sep 15), Richard Evanchec, special agent in charge of the FBI's Pittsburgh field office, described Kramer as a sustained supporter of the Islamic State. "Jonathan Kramer demonstrated a sustained devotion to the Islamic State of Syria," Evanchec said. He said Kramer had recorded a pledge of allegiance, distributed the group's propaganda, and shared methods for carrying out killings. US Attorney Troy Rivetti said investigators believed Kramer was moving forward with his "radical ideology". Officials did not disclose what specific target, location, or date had allegedly been planned. However, according to federal investigators, agents were watching Kramer on September 12 when he left his home carrying a backpack. He took an Uber to a Walmart in Gibsonia, where authorities said he met another person and removed a long black bag from a vehicle. Investigators believed the bag could contain a rifle. Kramer then travelled by Uber to a hotel in Cranberry Township, paying $450 in cash for a one-week stay. Agents said they later followed him to Dunham's Sports, where he was seen at the firearms counter. After he returned to the hotel, the FBI arrested him. 'I cant live In constant Fear' A search of the hotel room and Kramer's home allegedly uncovered a semi-automatic rifle, loaded magazines, a rifle scope, ammunition, around 190 rounds, 30 knives and a note. The note told people not to look for him and included the words: “I cant live In constant Fear.” The FBI said social media and encrypted communications provided further information about the alleged plot. Evanchec said Kramer had repeatedly tried to encourage and coordinate violence through encrypted platforms. Investigators said the discussions included attack methods involving firearms, vehicles, drones and chemical poisons. "Following that pledge, he made efforts to spread their propaganda and shared ways to kill all in the name of a foreign terrorist organization," Evanchec said. Rivetti thanked that individual and others who later cooperated with investigators. He added that public cooperation can help authorities intervene before violent crimes are carried out. Charges against the suspect Kramer has been charged with one count of receiving or transferring a firearm or ammunition while knowing, or having reasonable cause to believe, it would be used to commit a felony or federal crime of terrorism. Officials said Kramer waived his right to a detention hearing but requested a preliminary examination, which is scheduled for Wednesday.

Federal prosecutors and attorneys representing former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) official David Rush have reached the outline of a plea agreement in principle, halting the case before it could go to a grand jury for indictment. The case focused on $40 million worth of stolen gold bars tied to classified intelligence operations. In a joint filing submitted to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, both sides asked to extend the deadline for three weeks, until 8 October, to complete the paperwork and agree on a formal statement of facts. Media reports citing both parties say resolving the matter before a formal indictment serves the public interest, sparing everyone a lengthy and expensive legal battle that would have involved sensitive national security information. According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew T. Johnson, investigators recovered 303 individual one-kilogram gold bars, roughly $2 million in foreign currency, and 35 luxury watches, including several Rolex models. The affidavit alleges that between late 2025 and early 2026, Rush exploited his senior position to set up a fake classified program. He added that the programme required money to manage expenses of confidential operations. In response, the accused requested and received large amounts of gold and foreign currency. Later, intelligence officials stated to investigators that the probe agency could not discover any legal or valid operational reason for the requested funds. The US Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick directed Rush to remain in custody without bail during a primary detention hearing in June. The judge considered him a serious flight risk because of his specialised operational experience, large financial resources and ability to escape detection by law enforcement. The initial criminal charge brought against Rush was for stealing public funds through $77,000 in fraudulent military leave payments. According to court documents filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, Rush claimed 744 hours of military leave he had not actually earned on his official timesheets — this despite having received an honourable discharge from the United States Navy Reserve back in 2015.

US-IRAN WAR: The U.S. military says it has struck three Iranian oil tankers after Iranian missiles targeted two U.S. Navy warships in regional waters.

According to U.S. Central Command, an American aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer evaded multiple Iranian attacks, with no U.S. personnel injured. CENTCOM said two Iranian oil carriers were permanently disabled while a third unladen tanker was destroyed.

The U.S. military said the tankers were part of a shadow network allegedly helping finance Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and regional armed proxies. The strikes reportedly took place near Kharg Island, Jask and the Gulf of Oman.

The latest strikes mark another major escalation in the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, with tensions rising around Iran’s oil exports and the strategically vital Gulf region.

As BRICS prepares to meet in New Delhi, it would do well to understand not only what the United States is doing, but why.The reported American move to gain majority control over more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela’s proven oil reserves may appear to be another dramatic episode in Washington’s relationship with Caracas. But it may also offer a window into a much larger transformation in American strategy.The United States is becoming increasingly concerned about its dependence on resources, technologies and supply chains that it does not control. In a world of intensifying geopolitical competition, Washington appears determined to secure the foundations of its economic, technological and military power.Oil is only one part of the equation.Critical minerals, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, electricity generation, shipping routes, data and financial infrastructure are becoming strategic assets. Venezuela’s oil, Greenland’s geography and mineral potential, the Middle East’s energy resources and the security of the Western Hemisphere may seem like separate issues. They are increasingly connected by a single concern: American vulnerability.Artificial intelligence makes this question even more important.The next technological revolution will require enormous quantities of electricity, computing capacity, data centres and advanced chips. Those chips depend on complex global supply chains and critical minerals. The competition over artificial intelligence is therefore also becoming a competition over energy, minerals, manufacturing capacity and technology.In this environment, dependence can become vulnerability.The same logic applies to finance.Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-seeks-consensus-as-expanded-brics-prepares-for-new-delhi-summit-1787815256214">India seeks consensus as expanded BRICS prepares for New Delhi summit</a>After the Second World War, the United States did not simply inherit Britain’s position as the leading global power. Three journalists fired from the US military newspaper Stars and Stripes have sued the US Department of Defense, challenging their dismissals in federal court.

The journalists argue that their firings were unlawful and violated their First Amendment right to free speech. The lawsuit follows their reporting on a reported mental health crisis aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier that had spent more than 250 days at sea supporting US military operations.

The Pentagon reportedly accused the journalists of insubordination and other violations before dismissing them. The case has now raised broader questions about press freedom, editorial independence and the relationship between the US military and its independent news outlet.

Official reports of sexual assault in the US military, along with the estimated number of sexual assaults, both fell in fiscal year 2025, according to the Pentagon's annual sexual assault review released on Friday (August 21). The report draws on an anonymous survey conducted every other year that seeks service members' responses on whether they've experienced unwanted sexual conduct or harassment, a measure officials consider a more reliable gauge of the true scope of the problem than official reports alone. The survey discovered that the active duty number of women in service who claimed that they've experienced unwanted sexual contact fell from 6.8 per cent in fiscal year 2023 to 4.3 per cent in fiscal year 2025, while the rate for active duty men declined to 1 per cent from 1.3 per cent. This marks the second survey in a row showing a decline in prevalence, following high rates of 8.4 per cent for women and 1.6 per cent for men in 2021.&nbsp;Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iran-has-solid-defensive-shield-against-threats-claims-irgc-chief-ahmad-vahidi-as-trump-ramps-up-economic-war-1787361483669">Iran has ‘solid defensive shield’ against threats, claims IRGC chief Ahmad Vahidi as Trump ramps up economic war</a><h3>Previous years' sexual assault reports</h3>In fiscal year 2025, the Pentagon received 7,998 official reports of sexual assault containing either service members as victims or offenders. This marks a decrease from 8,195 in 2024 and 8,515 in 2023. The reporting rate rose to 33 per cent in 2025 from 25 per cent in fiscal year 2023, making it easier for victims to move on. "The Department continues to encourage greater reporting to connect warfighters with vital restorative care and enable leadership to hold offenders appropriately accountable," the Pentagon said in a news release containing the report. In addition, the Pentagon discovered that out of an estimated 20,492 service members impacted by sexual assault in fiscal year 2025, 6,843 made official reports. "Dignity, respect, and discipline are foundational to the warrior ethos and the overall preparedness of the force. Sexual assault and sexual harassment undermine these values, eroding trust and threatening the mission," Under Secretary of Defence for Personnel and Readiness Anthony J. Tata said in a statement.

This marks the second survey in a row showing a decline in prevalence, following high rates of 8.4 per cent for women and 1.6 per cent for men in 2021.

Researchers have called it an "ominous" trend for the education system of the US after nearly a quarter of students were chronically absent from school last year. The American Enterprise Institute confirmed that 22.6 per cent of students missed 10 per cent or more of the school year in 2025. This marks a decline from the peak of 28.3% recorded in 2022, at the height of the COVID pandemic. However, chronic absenteeism remains higher than pre-pandemic levels, and the pace of improvement appears to be slowing year over year. AEI described this trend as “an ominous slowdown that should be met with urgent action, not ignominious acceptance.” “Missing school means missing valuable instructional time and poses serious implications for students' overall academic success and wellbeing,” according to the U.S. Department of Education. “Research suggests that children who are chronically absent for multiple years between preschool and second grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the third grade.”<h3>Overall chronic absenteeism rate</h3>According to AEI's findings, Alaska, Washington, D.C., Oregon, and New Mexico recorded the highest absenteeism rates, while New Jersey, Virginia, and Alabama had the lowest. The think tank notes that the issue tends to be concentrated in historically disadvantaged school districts. In Illinois, for instance, the overall chronic absenteeism rate stood at around 25 per cent last year, but this figure rose to 31 per cent of low-income students and nearly 40 per cent among Black students.&nbsp;Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, saw 32% of its students chronically absent last year. In response, a local organisation called A+ Schools has taken a hands-on approach, directly reaching out to families and providing supplies and transportation support as the school year begins. "Today is about bridging that gap, going and knocking on doors, letting folks know about what's available at the school to help them out," James Fogarty with A+ Schools told CBS Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, New York City recently resolved a lawsuit that accused its public school system of failing to catch early warning signs of school avoidance, thereby denying disabled students a complete education. To address this, the school system has introduced a plan to place liaisons in every school building, tasked with identifying obstacles, such as mental health issues, that keep students from attending school.&nbsp;

US President Donald Trump has renewed his effort to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, reigniting a major legal and political battle over presidential power and the independence of America's central bank.

The Trump administration is seeking Cook's removal over allegations involving mortgage documents from 2021, before she joined the Federal Reserve in 2022. Trump has accused Cook of mortgage fraud, while Cook denies wrongdoing and her lawyers have called the allegations baseless and politically motivated.

The Supreme Court previously ruled 5–4 that Cook could remain in her position while she challenges her removal, finding that she had not been given the required procedural protections. However, the ruling did not permanently prevent Trump from attempting to remove her again.

Chief Justice John Roberts indicated that the president could pursue removal if Cook received proper notice and an opportunity to respond. Cook's deadline to respond is August 26.

A New Mexico court has ordered Meta to pay $567 million into a teen mental health fund, ruling that Facebook and Instagram contributed to harming young users and created a public nuisance.

The court also directed Meta to implement stronger youth safety measures, including limits on teen usage, stricter controls on adult interactions with minors, notification restrictions, and safeguards against inappropriate AI chatbot interactions.

The landmark ruling could influence similar lawsuits across the United States, where dozens of states and more than 1,300 school districts are pursuing legal action against social media companies over alleged harm to children.

A US federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration's policy freezing green card applications from 75 countries was unlawful, dealing a significant setback to President Donald Trump's immigration agenda.

The ruling, issued by US District Judge Amit Mehta in Washington, D.C., found that the State Department's "public charge" policy exceeded the authority granted under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Introduced earlier this year by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the policy had largely halted immigrant visa processing for applicants from countries including Nigeria, Colombia, Russia, and Egypt.

The policy mainly affected family-sponsored immigrant visa applicants and some employment-based green card applicants. While the administration argued that the measure was intended to prevent immigrants from relying on public assistance, critics said it effectively blocked applications without proper individual review.

A major controversy erupted at the AIDS 2026 Conference in Rio de Janeiro after the U.S. State Department displayed an AI-generated map that mislabeled multiple African countries. Nations including Nigeria, Mozambique, Uganda, Malawi, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon were either misplaced or incorrectly represented, triggering widespread criticism.

The U.S. later apologized, admitting the map was added at the last minute by a staff member. Critics say the incident raises serious concerns about the unchecked use of artificial intelligence in official government presentations, especially on sensitive diplomatic matters involving Africa.

A major controversy has erupted after a map of Africa displayed by the U.S. State Department at the AIDS 2026 Conference in Rio de Janeiro reportedly mislabeled every African country.

The incorrect map quickly drew criticism from delegates and observers after analyses found major geographical errors, including Nigeria being shown as a landlocked country in the Sahara, Mozambique placed in the Horn of Africa, and Ivory Coast located on the wrong side of the continent.

The controversy deepened after reports revealed that the presentation slide contained an AI watermark, indicating it had been created using OpenAI tools. The U.S. State Department accepted responsibility for the mistake, saying a staff member hastily modified the presentation before the event. OpenAI said it was investigating the reports surrounding the incident.

A social media influencer was reportedly killed by her estranged husband less than two weeks after she uploaded a video on TikTok accusing him of being a paedophile, according to police and court records. Police indicated that the 43-year-old woman, identified as Sara Gilson, also known as Sara Duffey, was discovered dead with a gunshot wound. She was found dead alongside her 48-year-old estranged husband, Jeremiah Shawn Duffey, at their home in Collinsville, a suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the US, on Thursday night. Investigators suspected that Duffey shot Gilson before ending his own life. However, the case is still under investigation. The deaths occurred weeks after Gilson had filed for a protective order on 10 June to keep Duffey away from the family residence. Court documents indicate that the same day, another woman also sought a protective order, alleging Duffey had acted inappropriately towards her teenage daughter. These claims were subsequently reported to police in Owasso, Oklahoma. In her own court filing, Gilson cited the allegations against Duffey and further claimed that he had access to guns, had threatened suicide and had "gone on the run". After a month, on 11 July, Gilson posted a sombre TikTok video on her account with tens of thousands of followers. Seated silently in a chair, on-screen text read: "Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon-to-be ex-husband who I just found out is a paedophile." "I wish I were joking," she wrote in the caption. Twelve days later, that post, nearly at 11.15 pm on Thursday, police received a 911 call originating from inside the Collinsville home. Dispatchers reported hearing a woman screaming, followed by a sound resembling a gunshot, before the line went dead. Shortly after, a young boy called 911 from a neighbour's house, telling dispatchers that his stepfather had shot his mother, according to police. Upon arrival, officers discovered both Gilson and Duffey deceased, each having apparently sustained gunshot wounds to the head. Investigators suspect the incident was a murder-suicide, although the inquiry remains active. Gilson's son was placed in protective custody before being handed over to another parent uninvolved in the incident. She leaves behind a son and a daughter.&nbsp;
