Passengers at several major airports in the United States (US) are no longer required to remove their shoes during standard preflight screenings, CBS News has confirmed. In a joint investigation, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation concluded that no evidence supported sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was murdered in jail. During the probe, the investigators also found that there was no secret “client list” tied to him or he blackmailed powerful figures or kept a roster of high-profile clients for illicit purposes, Axios reported. The findings following the probe counter long-running rumours about Epstein operating a blackmail scheme, involving politicians, celebrities, and business moguls. As per the report in the memo, "there is no evidence that Epstein blackmailed a prominent person".
How did Jeffrey Epstein die?
The investigation has reaffirmed the original determination made by the New York City medical examiner claiming that Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. According to the memo, surveillance footage, which the Trump administration now intends to release, supports this conclusion and backs the official account that Epstein was not murdered. This marks the first time the Trump administration has formally challenged conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein’s death and activities, narratives previously amplified by the FBI’s top officials before Trump appointed them.Kash Patel, now the FBI director, and Dan Bongino, now the deputy director, both key MAGA figures, were once vocal sceptics of the official version of events. However, both have since acknowledged Epstein’s death as a suicide.Despite this, widespread speculation persists online, particularly within right-wing circles, that Epstein’s crimes involved influential individuals and that he was killed to protect them.Tensions over the issue were reignited last month when Elon Musk, amid a public fallout with Trump, claimed the former president was listed in Epstein’s files and claimed that this is the real reason why the important documents are still being withheld from the public.Meanwhile, the Justice Department released Epstein’s contact book as part of newly unsealed documents in February.Further, the DOJ and FBI stated in the memo that no further disclosure of Epstein-related material would be relevant or warranted.

Security experts have warned that following US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last month could step up North Korea to extend the development and procurement of nuclear weapons for its survival. They also noted that the attacks could weaken efforts toward denuclearisation on the Korean peninsula, a goal which China also supports. In addition, experts said the mounting pressure of the US on North Korea could destabilise the region and fuel nuclear proliferation.“North Korean leaders may confirm their previous assessment: that [US President Donald] Trump acts for reasons that are not ‘security’ or geopolitical-related. He is therefore an emotional, unpredictable force, and not one that is trustworthy at all," Stephen Costello, a non-resident fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, said, the South China Morning Post reported.Niklas Swanstrom, executive director of the Stockholm-based Institute for Security and Development Policy, suggested that US strikes on Iran might prompt North Korea to make its nuclear weapons more mobile and harder to target, strengthen its second-strike capabilities, and invest significantly in underground bunkers and backup production infrastructure.“Any remaining possibility of North Korean denuclearisation will be effectively terminated, as the regime will view nuclear weapons as the ultimate guarantee of survival,” Swanstrom said.During the first term, US President Donald Trump held a series of historic conversations with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over the nuclear proliferation. In 2018, the first summit in Singapore concluded with a joint statement with vague commitments to denuclearisation. Later in Hanoi, Vietnam, the talks ended abruptly without a deal.
Why is China worried?
Meanwhile, experts warned that increased US pressure was expected to create regional instability that would be unfavourable for China, where it can face a complex strategic environment. Did US strikes on Iran push North Korea to expand nuclear arsenal? Here's what reports suggest

The Trump administration is preparing to impose new restrictions on exports of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips to Malaysia and Thailand as part of a broader effort to block the illegal flow of US semiconductors to China. The move, still in draft form at the US Commerce Department, signals Washington’s growing concern that these Southeast Asian nations may be used as intermediaries to bypass longstanding export bans. The regulation would prevent leading American firms like Nvidia Corp. from shipping their high-performance AI processors to companies in Malaysia and Thailand unless specific conditions are met. These new curbs are seen as a continuation and reshaping of the 2022 and 2023 restrictions imposed under President Joe Biden’s administration, which targeted direct and indirect AI technology transfers to China. According to a report by Bloomberg, the draft rule aims to halt the so-called “AI diffusion” that could give Chinese firms access to restricted chips via third countries. The regulation could still be amended, but it reflects the Trump administration’s first concrete step in rewriting the US export control framework for sensitive technologies.
Suspected diversion routes spark alarm
While the US has already barred direct sales of Nvidia’s most powerful chips to Chinese entities, officials believe some of these processors may be reaching China through partner firms or cloud servers located in Southeast Asia. A key concern is the potential for Chinese AI companies to remotely access advanced computing power via data centres in Malaysia or Thailand, sidestepping the export bans.In June, Malaysian authorities acknowledged they were investigating claims that a Chinese company operating locally was using servers equipped with Nvidia hardware to train large language models. The new restrictions would seek to close these loopholes. The policy also reflects growing unease in Washington about the rising role of Southeast Asia in the global semiconductor supply chain. Malaysian and Thai facilities are integral to chip packaging and testing, which are essential stages in chip production. But recent surges in chip exports to Malaysia have drawn scrutiny from US regulators. In a related case, Singaporean prosecutors recently charged three individuals for allegedly defrauding clients about the true destination of Nvidia-powered AI servers shipped to Malaysia. Nvidia has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
Transitional relief and ongoing review
The draft rule includes temporary relief measures to reduce the immediate impact on US and allied companies operating in the region. For a few months after the rule takes effect, businesses headquartered in the US or approved allied nations would be able to ship AI chips to Malaysia and Thailand without applying for special licenses. Additional exemptions are expected to avoid disrupting global chip supply chains.Officials from the Commerce Department have not commented on the specifics of the draft rule, but Secretary Howard Lutnick previously told lawmakers that allies would still be allowed to buy AI chips, provided they’re managed by US-approved data centre operators and cloud service providers.Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has stated in the past that there is “no evidence” of chip diversion, although he did not reference any country in particular. Meanwhile, Malaysian and Thai officials have yet to formally respond, though Malaysia has emphasised the need for consistent and transparent policy from the US.This move marks a critical shift in US tech policy, one that could reshape the landscape for AI development in Southeast Asia and further deepen the technological divide between China and the West. Whether more countries will be added to the restricted list remains to be seen, but officials have not ruled out broader measures.

Are US citizens proud to be Americans under Donald Trump? Survey says...

The latest US jobs report for June has painted a picture of a resilient labour market, with nonfarm payrolls rising by 147,000, well above analysts’ expectations of 110,000. The unemployment rate fell slightly to 4.1 per cent, marking it the lowest since February. However, beneath the headline figures, there are signs that the labour market is losing momentum, raising questions about the strength of the recovery and the path ahead for the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy.
Government jobs lead the charge; private sector slows
The June report showed that the job gains were heavily concentrated in government employment, which accounted for nearly half of the total increase. State and local government education saw a robust rise of 63,000 jobs, primarily due to the seasonal uptick in education-related hiring. Healthcare also contributed significantly, adding 39,000 jobs, while social assistance, which includes family services, added another 19,000 positions.Private sector hiring, however, showed signs of slowing down. While the overall increase in private payrolls stood at 74,000, it was the lowest gain since October 2024, signalling a cooling in hiring across many key industries. Notably, manufacturing shed 7,000 jobs for the second consecutive month, a worrying development for one of the sectors President Donald Trump has prioritised for growth. Retail and transportation, industries sensitive to trade policies, also showed weak job creation.Additionally, the report revealed a slight dip in the average workweek, edging down by 0.1 hour to 34.2 hours. This reduction suggests that businesses may be cutting hours as economic headwinds, such as tariffs and global uncertainty, begin to weigh on corporate decision-making.
The Fed’s dilemma
While June’s job gains exceeded expectations, the data could make it more challenging for the Federal Reserve to justify an interest rate cut in its upcoming meetings. The Federal Reserve has been under increasing pressure from President Trump to reduce borrowing costs, but with strong job growth and rising wages, the central bank may hold off on cuts in the near term. The report revealed a modest rise in average hourly earnings of 0.2 per cent, bringing the year-over-year wage increase to 3.7 per cent, which still outpaces inflation. However, wage growth has slowed from earlier months, and economists suggest this may signal a plateau in the labour market recovery.Though initial jobless claims remain low and overall unemployment is at a low level, the broader picture suggests caution. The labour force participation rate remained stable at 62.3 per cent, but this masks a larger issue, the number of people leaving the workforce is climbing. In fact, the household survey showed that the labour force contracted by 329,000 in June, signalling a shrinking pool of job seekers. The broader U-6 measure of unemployment, which includes discouraged workers and part-time workers seeking full-time jobs, fell to 7.7 per cent, its lowest level since January 2024.
Cracks beneath the surface
Despite the positive headline figures, the details of the June jobs report reveal cracks in the economy. One of the most notable concerns is the increase in the number of long-term unemployed workers. The number of people unemployed for 27 weeks or longer rose by 190,000 to 1.6 million, accounting for 23.3 per cent of the total unemployed population. This uptick, combined with a rise in the average duration of unemployment, suggests that many job seekers are facing longer periods of joblessness, despite the overall low unemployment rate. Moreover, the rising jobless rate for Black Americans, up to 6.8 per cent in June from 6.0 per cent the previous month, highlights persistent inequality in the labour market. The increase in jobless rates among women, who have left the workforce in greater numbers since January, further complicates the labour market’s outlook. Since the beginning of the year, 338,000 women have exited the labour force, while 183,000 men have joined it.The apparent resilience in the job market also belies underlying weaknesses in certain sectors. The loss of jobs in manufacturing, the slow growth in construction, and the uncertainty surrounding Trump’s trade and immigration policies all point to broader challenges. In short, while the June jobs report on the surface seems to reflect a thriving labour market, it hides significant challenges. The slowdown in private sector job creation, the rise in long-term unemployment, and the broader labour force contraction suggest that the economy is facing more headwinds than the headline data would suggest. For the Federal Reserve, these mixed signals will complicate its decision-making on monetary policy. (With inputs from agencies)

The June report showed that the job gains were heavily concentrated in government employment, which accounted for nearly half of the total increase. State and local government education saw a robust rise of 63,000 jobs, primarily due to the seasonal uptick in education-related hiring.

Government jobs lead the charge; private sector slows The June report showed that the job gains were heavily concentrated in government employment, which accounted for nearly half of the total increase. Is July 4th, 2025, a Federal Holiday on the US Independence Day? Here's what will (and won’t) be open this Friday

The US Federal Reserve announced on June 27 that all 22 of the nation’s largest banks have passed its 2025 stress tests, clearing the way for potential dividend hikes and stock buybacks. The results indicate that the financial system remains resilient, even under a hypothetical severe economic downturn, though the Fed's scenario this year was notably less severe than in 2024. “Large banks remain well capitalised and resilient to a range of severe outcomes,” said Michelle W. Bowman, the Fed’s Vice Chair for Supervision and a recent appointee by President Donald Trump. The annual exam tested how banks would perform under a hypothetical global recession marked by a 30 per cent plunge in commercial real estate prices, a 33 per cent drop in home prices, and a spike in unemployment to 10 per cent. Despite projected losses of over $550 billion, including $158 billion from credit card defaults and $124 billion in commercial loan losses, all banks remained above regulatory minimum capital requirements. The average common equity tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio dropped 1.8 percentage points under the stress scenario but still held strong at 11.6 per cent, more than double the minimum requirement of 4.5 per cent. Leading performers included JPMorgan Chase, which retained a 14.2 per cent capital ratio, and Charles Schwab, which posted the highest at 32.7 per cent. BMO’s US operations recorded the lowest, at 7.8 per cent, though still well above the regulatory floor.
Less intense test draws scrutiny
Compared to 2024, this year’s test scenario was milder, with less dramatic declines in asset prices and economic indicators. Last year’s test included a 40 per cent drop in commercial real estate, a 36 per cent fall in housing, and a 55 per cent plunge in stock prices. The more lenient approach prompted questions from analysts and policymakers, particularly around the lack of testing for private credit, a rapidly growing $2 trillion asset class that some researchers have flagged as a potential systemic risk. The Fed defended the change by citing “unintended volatility” in prior results and said it plans to solicit public feedback and make future stress test models and scenarios more transparent. In April, the Fed also proposed averaging results over two years to smooth capital requirement volatility. If adopted, this year’s results would be averaged with 2024’s, raising the projected capital decline to 2.3 percentage points.
Dividend and buyback plans coming soon
With the positive results, banks are now free to announce their capital distribution plans, likely starting next week. Analysts expect an uptick in share buybacks, which have already led to a 3 per cent drop in outstanding shares over the past five quarters among tested banks. While the Fed’s results are reassuring, some analysts warn that more rigorous testing may be needed in future years to fully assess vulnerabilities in an evolving financial landscape.

US President Donald Trump seems to be liking his new nickname - 'Daddy'! The White House has just dropped a one-minute video showing Trump’s arrival and interactions at the NATO summit set to the background track Daddy's Home by Usher. It all began when NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Trump behaved like a 'Daddy' in dealing with Iran and Israel. Rutte's remark was in response to Trump's usual comparison of Iran and Israel as “two school kids fighting.”

"They've had a big fight, like two kids in a schoolyard," Trump said, referring to Israel and Iran. "You know, they fight like hell. You can't stop them. Let them fight for about two, three minutes, then it's easier to stop." To that, Rutte responded: "And then Daddy has to sometimes use strong language," referring to Trump's usage of the F-word after Israel and Iran violated the ceasefire. Trump laughed at Rutte's remark and said, "Everyone said 'Well, you have to use a certain word." Ahead of boarding Air Force One to attend the NATO Summit in the Netherlands, Trump angrily said, when asked about violation of ceasefire by Israel and Iran, "The two countries have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the fuck they're doing, do you understand that?" Trump on June 24 declared that a ceasefire had been agreed between Israel and Iran and war had stopped, but both countries violated it soon after Trump's announcement and fired missiles at each other. This was a major upset for Trump, who angrily warned Israel against bombing Iran and lost his cool in front of reporters.
‘Daddy’ remark doesn't stop!
During a press interaction on the sidelines of the NATO Summit, Trump was asked about Rutte's 'Daddy' remark, to which Trump responded, "He did it very affectionately," Trump said. "Daddy, you're my daddy." Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Rutte said he was not calling President Trump “daddy,” and the remark was a metaphor for US leadership. In an interview with Reuters, Rutte explained the context. He said, "And I said, that sounds a little bit like a small child asking his daddy, 'Hey, are you still staying with the family?' So, in that sense, I used 'daddy,' not that I was calling President Trump daddy." When asked if he was overpraising Trump to keep him happy amid ongoing complaints about NATO’s dependence on US support, Rutte said he didn't think so. "I think it's a bit of a question of taste," he remarked. Rutte called Trump a "good friend" of more than ten years, adding that he deserves the credit.

The US Treasury Department on Wednesday prohibited three Mexico-based financial transactions institutions, CIBanco, Intercam Banco, and Vector Casa de Bolsa, under the Fentanyl Sanctions Act and the FEND Off Fentanyl Act. The first use of new sanctions was led by the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), which designated the three financial firms as “primary money laundering concerns."The classification restricts the US entities from continuing any transactions with their Mexican branches. However, the applied sanctions don't involve freezing assets and global access to US dollars, but effectively isolate the institutions from the US financial system.Although the firms involved are not major players in Mexico’s financial industry, the US Treasury’s move may have significant consequences due to the tightly linked banking systems of Mexico and the United States, according to a report in the news agency Reuters. The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) labelled the three institutions as “primary money laundering concerns,” barring US entities from engaging in transactions with their Mexican branches. While the sanctions stop short of freezing assets or entirely cutting off access to the US dollar, standard in more stringent cases, they still effectively sever these firms from the American financial network.“This is a bold move. Being cut off from the US financial system is a death blow. It’s enormously impactful,” said Vanda Felbab-Brown of the Brookings Institution, an expert in organised crime. While she acknowledged that these are mid-sized firms rather than top-tier institutions, she emphasised that the fallout would still be serious, even if it doesn't drastically disrupt cartel finances.
Institutions deny any allegations
The Treasury Department confirmed that these institutions have offered the laundering of millions of dollars for Mexican cartels for over a year, enabling payments for chemicals used to manufacture fentanyl. Meanwhile, institutions pushed back, denying the allegations. The Vector categorically rejected the claims and promised to cooperate with the authorities. In addition, Intercam also refuted the claim of alleged involvement in illicit activity, and no official response has been issued from the CIBanco end.“Financial facilitators like CIBanco, Intercam, and Vector are enabling the poisoning of countless Americans by moving money on behalf of cartels, making them vital cogs in the fentanyl supply chain,” Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said in a statement released by the US Treasury Department. “Through the first use of this powerful authority, today’s actions affirm Treasury’s commitment to using all tools at our disposal to counter the threat posed by criminal and terrorist organisations trafficking fentanyl and other narcotics.”As per Reuters, the Finance Ministry of Mexico said that in order to support the allegations, it had requested evidence from the US Treasury, but no conclusive information was received. Legal analyst Luis Manuel Perez de Acha called the decision a “bombshell,” emphasising that exclusion from US financial systems could render the affected firms virtually inoperative. The sanctions could also deepen existing tensions in US-Mexico trade relations, which are already under stress from American efforts, such as imposing high tariffs, to pressure Mexico into controlling the movement of fentanyl across the border.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in the US fell significantly in the first quarter of 2025, dropping to $52.8 billion from a revised $79.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024. Walmart settles FTC case over money transfer fraud for $10 million, as regulators warn retailers to boost oversight and protect consumers from scams.

Retail giant Walmart has agreed to pay $10 million to settle a civil lawsuit filed by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which accused the company of failing to prevent scammers from using its money transfer services to defraud consumers. As per Reuters, the case underscores growing scrutiny over how large retailers manage financial services, especially amid rising incidents of fraud linked to telemarketing and wire transfers. The settlement was filed on Friday in a federal court in Chicago and still requires judicial approval. What is the case about? As per a 2022 complaint filed by the FTC, Walmart allegedly turned a blind eye while fraudsters used its in-store money transfer services, including partnerships with MoneyGram and Western Union — to siphon off hundreds of millions of dollars from consumers. According to Reuters, these scams typically included impersonation of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials, fake lottery or sweepstakes claims, and fraudulent emergency requests from people posing as relatives. Once the funds were sent, they were almost impossible to trace or recover, a tactic that made electronic money transfers the method of choice for fraudsters. What did the court say? According to Reuters, the proposed $10 million settlement was submitted to US District Judge Manish Shah, who must now approve the agreement. Judge Shah had earlier dismissed part of the FTC’s claims in July 2023, but allowed the key allegations to proceed. Walmart appealed that decision, and this settlement would effectively end the appeal. Under the agreement, Walmart has also committed to enhanced oversight measures. What did the FTC say? “Electronic money transfers are one of the most common ways that scammers tell consumers to send them money, because once it’s sent, it’s gone for good,” said Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, as quoted by Reuters. He added that companies offering these services must train employees and build systems that can flag suspicious activity and stop transactions before it’s too late. What is Walmart’s response? As per Reuters, Walmart has not admitted or denied wrongdoing under the terms of the settlement. The company also did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment following the court filing. In a move that could dramatically reshape the landscape of high-net-worth immigration, US President Donald Trump has officially launched a new fast-track residency programme dubbed the “Trump Gold Card.” The initiative requiring a $5 million payment in exchange for permanent residency, is now accepting preliminary applications via a newly launched government portal. The Trump administration unveiled the site, trumpcard.gov, on Wednesday, where foreign nationals and businesses can express interest in the premium immigration pathway. While the cards are not being issued yet, the site allows potential applicants to join a waiting list, submit basic personal information and receive updates on the rollout.
Trump unveils ‘Trump Card’ portal on Truth Social
Trump made the announcement through his social media platform Truth Social, stating, “For five million dollars, individuals can obtain access to what is called The Trump Card.” He added that “thousands have been calling and asking how they can sign up to ride a beautiful road in gaining access to the Greatest Country and Market anywhere in the World.”

The linked webpage, titled “The Trump Card is coming,” requests details like name, country of origin, whether the applicant is an individual or business, and an email address. According to USA Today, the website is functioning only as a notification list, and no actual cards are being issued at this stage.
What is the Trump's ‘Gold Card’?
The Trump's ‘Gold Card’ is a new immigration programme that promises permanent US residency for foreign nationals who invest $5 million. While the details are still being finalised, Trump has described the card as offering “green card privileges plus,” suggesting an expedited route to citizenship for wealthy individuals and high-skill contributors. In an interview cited by Reuters, Trump clarified that the Gold Card “does not offer citizenship directly,” but is “a sophisticated alternative to the green card” with “an elevated pathway toward eventual citizenship.”
How is it different from the US Green Card and EB-5 visa?
The Trump Gold Card appears to be a more exclusive alternative to the EB-5 investor visa, a long-standing programme that grants green cards to foreign nationals who invest between $800,000 and $1.05 million in a US enterprise and create at least 10 full-time American jobs. Unlike the EB-5, the Gold Card does not require job creation, potentially making it far more accessible to passive investors. According to Bloomberg, this new policy could reduce bureaucratic delays and attract ultra-high-net-worth individuals who view the US not only as a destination for relocation but also as a secure market for financial and real estate investments. Legal experts have raised questions about how the Trump administration plans to differentiate this card from existing residency statuses under immigration law. “It could face significant challenges in the courts unless it is written into legislation,” said immigration attorney Rachel Woldenberg, as quoted by The New York Times.
What does this mean for the US economy?
The launch of the Trump Gold Card comes amid heightened global interest in “citizenship by investment” schemes, many of which are operated by countries like Portugal, the UAE and St. Kitts and Nevis. The US, historically more restrictive in this space, could now become a serious player in the market for wealth-driven migration. According to the Migration Policy Institute, over 14,000 people have received EB-5 visas since 2020, contributing more than $37 billion in direct investment to the US economy. Economists suggest that a streamlined $5 million route could increase foreign capital inflow significantly, especially from Asia and the Middle East. However, critics argue that such programmes may widen inequalities. “It creates a two-tier immigration system, where money buys privilege,” said Muzaffar Chishti, a senior fellow at MPI, speaking to Bloomberg. Still, supporters believe the Gold Card could unlock new avenues for foreign investment, especially amid concerns over budget deficits and rising national debt. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) recently projected a federal deficit of $1.6 trillion in 2025. If even 1,000 Gold Cards are sold, the scheme could inject $5 billion directly into the US economy.
What happens next?
While the website is live and collecting interest, the Trump administration has yet to announce a start date for processing applications or issuing residency permits. Legislative hurdles may also stand in the way. As per Reuters, no formal bill has yet been introduced in Congress to legitimise or fund the programme. Still, for those with deep pockets and dreams of an American zip code, the Trump Gold Card may soon be the most direct and expensive ticket in. (With inputs from the agencies)

In response, Trump told reporters at the White House, “I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.” Shortly after, Musk posted calls for Trump’s impeachment and claimed that Trump’s tariff policy could lead to a recession. Trump responded on Truth Social, saying Musk should have voiced his objections earlier, and suggested cutting off government support for Musk’s companies. “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,” Trump wrote. “I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!” Trump not focused on investigations or contract cuts Although Trump floated the idea of cancelling Musk’s federal contracts, on Saturday he said he hadn’t given it much thought, “I’d be allowed to do that… but I haven’t given it any thought.” Trump also distanced himself from calls to investigate Musk’s immigration history and business deals. “I mean it’s not something that’s on top of my mind right now,” he told NBC. Trump confident in bill’s passage despite Musk opposition Despite Musk’s criticism, Trump said he believes the budget bill, named the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, will still pass the Senate by 4 July. “The Republican Party has never been united like this before. It’s never been. It’s actually more so than it was three days ago,” he claimed. “I think, actually, Elon brought out the strengths of the bill because people that weren’t as focused started focusing on it, and they see how good it is. So in that sense, there was a big favour. But I think Elon, really, I think it’s a shame that he’s so depressed and so heartbroken,” he said.

Trump also made it clear that he has no interest in repairing his relationship with Musk after their public fallout earlier in the week. When asked if he would consider making amends, he simply replied, “No.”

The United States saw a record-breaking decline in goods imports in April, as President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs began to reshape the country’s trade landscape. Imports plummeted by 19.8 per cent from March to $276.1 billion, the largest monthly drop since the Census Bureau began tracking the data in 1992, according to figures released on May 30.The collapse in imports followed a frenzied import rush in March, when businesses scrambled to stockpile foreign goods ahead of Trump’s so-called “liberation day” tariff hike announced for April 2. Joe Biden on Friday (May 30) delivered his first speech since being diagnosed earlier this month with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones. Speaking in Delaware, the former US president honoured fallen soldiers during a Memorial Day week event.
Honouring sacrifice and defending democracy
In New Castle, Biden linked their sacrifice to the responsibility Americans have today. “They are not asking us to risk our lives, they are asking us to stay true to what America stands for,” he said. “They are not asking us to do their jobs, they are asking us do our jobs – to protect our nation, in our time, now, to defend democracy.”Though he didn’t mention Donald Trump by name, Biden’s remarks came after the current Republican president gave a self-focused Memorial Day address. Biden’s words stood in contrast, with an emphasis on national duty and unity.
Avoiding talk of Trump and treatment
Throughout the speech, Biden did not speak about Trump or his recent push for more presidential power, which critics say threatens American democracy. Nor did he refer to his own illness during the address.Still, he sounded passionate and strong. The speech also came as his family marked ten years since the death of his son Beau, who passed away from brain cancer at the age of 46.
Optimism despite aggressive cancer
After the event, Biden spoke briefly with reporters and confirmed he is already receiving treatment for the disease. “All the folks are very optimistic… the expectation is we are going to be able to beat this,” he said.He described the treatment as “one particular pill” taken daily and added, “It’s not in any organs, my bones are strong.” Biden shared that he is under the care of a top surgeon who himself survived prostate cancer thirty years ago.
At a crossroads for America
Biden didn’t hold back when discussing the challenges the country faces today. “We’re at a really difficult moment, not just Americans, the world,” he said, calling this “an inflection point” where decisions made now will shape the next two decades. He also expressed pride in his time as president, saying, “I’m very proud. I’ll put my record as president against any president at all.”

For now, Trump’s legal team remains defiant, promising to escalate the fight all the way to the Supreme Court if needed. But as analysts warn, hastily reintroducing tariffs through other channels could open the door to more lawsuits — unless the process is rock-solid. “If Trump jumps through the hoops and does all the paperwork for Section 232 tariffs, then he may have tariffs that are legally sustainable,” Lucier told Bloomberg. “But if he rushes it, the same anti-tariff forces will take him to court again.” The court’s decision has bought Trump time, but not clarity. As legal battles escalate and the 2026 midterm clock ticks louder, the future of America’s aggressive trade policy hangs in the balance.

A 17-year-old boy from Wisconsin has been accused of murdering his parents as part of a plan to assassinate US President Donald Trump and overthrow the government, according to newly unsealed court documents.
Federal authorities say the teenager, Nikita Casap, outlined his intentions in text messages and written notes discovered by investigators. A federal affidavit claims Casap saw the killing of his parents as a way to gain the “financial means and autonomy” to carry out his plan.
He now faces nine felony charges in Waukesha County, including two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of hiding a corpse. On the federal level, three additional charges are being pursued, including attempted presidential assassination, conspiracy, and the use of weapons of mass destruction.

The bodies of Casap’s mother, Tatiana Casap, and stepfather, Donald Mayer, were found at their home, both killed by gunshots. Investigators believe the murders happened on 11 February.
Casap was initially arrested in Kansas by the WaKeeney Police Department for allegedly stealing his stepfather’s SUV and carrying a firearm.
When authorities searched his phone, they reportedly found extremist content, including material connected to the “Order of Nine Angles,” a group described in court papers as promoting neo-Nazi and racially motivated ideologies.
Court documents say agents discovered communications and photos referencing a self-written manifesto. It contained instructions on how to make bombs, conduct terrorist attacks, and carry out an assassination.

'Getting rid of the president': US teen kills parents to fund Trump assassination plot and ‘bring in some chaos’

Lafayette police have released new footage showing the moment a 73-year-old man opened fire inside an Indiana laundromat, killing one person and injuring two others before taking his own life.
The shooter, Louis McGlothlin, a US Navy veteran from Lincoln, Nebraska, entered Lafayette Laundry on 5 December and immediately began firing. Surveillance video captured McGlothlin shooting and killing 35-year-old Keith Ford while wounding 32-year-old Renee Martin and 30-year-old Salvador Antonio De La Cruz Reyes.
After the attack, McGlothlin stepped outside, cleared a jammed weapon, and shot himself in the head. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died two days later.

Police investigating the attack found no connection between McGlothlin and the victims or the laundromat. They believe he targeted the business simply because it was open in a familiar area.
Authorities uncovered recordings in which McGlothlin spoke of a conspiracy, claiming that people in Lafayette were "controlling his mind." These videos, police said, indicated severe, undiagnosed mental health issues.
In one of the recordings, McGlothlin referred to “a cancer” in Lafayette and urged action against those he believed were manipulating him.
Police also discovered a note referencing a prior plan to commit violence. The note mentioned that McGlothlin originally intended to carry out an attack in the year 2000 but had sold his gun at the time.

On the day of the shooting, McGlothlin drove from Nebraska to Indiana, returning to his childhood hometown before carrying out the attack.

The White House has responded to concerns over potential cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid after Elon Musk suggested that his administration's US DOGE Service might target waste and fraud within these programmes.
Speaking in a Fox Business interview on Monday, Musk claimed that “waste and fraud” in entitlement spending could be reduced, estimating potential savings of “half a trillion, maybe 600 to 700 billion a year.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified on Tuesday that Musk was referring specifically to eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse within these programmes. She accused the media of taking his words “out of context” and added that the administration is not considering direct cuts to Social Security benefits.

What does Elon Musk think about Social Security?

Elon Musk has previously criticised Social Security, calling it a “Ponzi scheme” and sharing a meme describing beneficiaries as “the Parasite Class”. When pressed about his estimate that entitlement programmes could contain up to $700 billion in fraud, Leavitt defended Musk’s statement, explaining that it was based on internal reviews conducted by DOGE. “It’s an estimate based on what he’s seen. He’s not saying definitively,” she told reporters.
The administration also cited a report from the Government Accountability Office, which estimates that fraud across the entire government could range between $233 billion and $521 billion annually. However, these figures apply to all federal spending, not just Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Government auditors have found that improper Social Security payments total around $10 billion per year, less than 1% of total benefits. In 2023, Medicare and Medicaid payment errors amounted to approximately $100 billion, though this includes clerical errors, not just fraud.

Elon Musk's comments face public backlash

Musk’s comments have sparked backlash, particularly from Democrats who fear that benefit cuts may be on the horizon. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan) took to social media, saying, “Musk said the quiet part out loud: he’s going after your Social Security and Medicare. Period.”
Additionally, under DOGE’s direction, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is preparing to lay off at least 7,000 employees. Overtime for workers processing benefit claims has been suspended, and some regional and field offices are being shut down. Democrats have warned that these changes could make it harder for Americans to access their benefits, potentially putting millions at risk.

"I think [the business community could see clarity on tariffs]," he said, adding, "But the tariffs could go up as time goes by, and they may go up…"
During his interview, Trump said that the US has been taken advantage of by other countries.

Trump has previously imposed tariffs on Mexico and Canada, as well as on China, arguing that these measures are necessary due to border security concerns. He claims that fentanyl is being smuggled into the US through imports from these countries.
