Pro-Palestinian graffiti has defaced US President Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland, with the activist group Palestine Action taking credit for the vandalism.

On Saturday, local media shared images depicting red paint smeared across the resort’s walls with messages like “Free Gaza” and “Free Palestine,” as well as insults aimed at Trump. Across the course, holes were excavated, and one of the greens was marred with the inscription “Gaza is not for sale.”

Donald Trump’s newly appointed FBI Director, Kash Patel, has made a series of unusual requests that would have been unthinkable in previous administrations, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
Patel, a close ally of Trump, was confirmed by the narrowest margin in the US Senate. Shortly after taking office, he reportedly asked for direct phone lines to Trump from both his office and home, bypassing the Department of Justice's usual chain of communication.

"Senior FBI officials can’t bring cellphones into their offices given the security risks. A secure landline already sits on the desks of many top FBI officials that can connect them to the White House switchboard, the CIA, and other national security agencies, but Patel asked how to connect directly with Trump’s Oval Office," the report said.
His first move as director was to remove all existing executive staffers from the seventh floor, where his office is located. Patel also explored "an arrangement outside the traditional chain of command in which the FBI director reports to the deputy attorney general, and the president usually talks only to the attorney general," according to the Journal.

Additionally, Patel has reportedly looked into hiring his own private security detail, despite already having FBI agents assigned for his protection. The report added, "Patel asked about having a separate detail, in an apparent suggestion that he didn’t fully trust the FBI agents, according to people familiar with the request."

‘He didn’t fully trust FBI agents’: FBI Director Kash Patel wants private security and direct hotline to Trump

In recent weeks, a wave of mass firings has swept through both the federal government and the tech industry in the United States, leading to significant upheaval for thousands of employees. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), have been at the forefront of these actions, each implementing extensive layoffs within their respective domains.
Since the commencement of President Trump's second term, approximately 20,000 federal civil service workers have been dismissed. These layoffs have predominantly targeted probationary employees with less than one or two years of service.

A driver in Layton, Utah, narrowly avoided serious injury after jumping out of their SUV just moments before it was struck by a passenger train. The incident was captured on security cameras and has since gained significant attention on social media, with the video amassing over 13 million views on X.
The footage, shared by Collin Rugg, shows the SUV approaching a railroad crossing as warning lights flashed and the barrier gate lowered. Instead of stopping, the driver proceeded past the gate, bringing the vehicle to a halt with its rear wheels still on the tracks.

A new digital tracker called the DOGE Clock has gained attention online for claiming to monitor taxpayers' savings under the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative led by Elon Musk. While the tracker displays over $32 billion in savings, it is not officially linked to the Donald Trump administration or the department itself.

Purpose of the DOGE Clock

According to its official website, the DOGE Clock is designed to estimate and display the amount of taxpayer money saved through policy changes introduced by the Department of Government Efficiency. The tracker monitors key financial metrics, including total initiatives proposed by DOGE, overall savings achieved, projected taxpayer savings
Additionally, the tool features a countdown timer leading up to 4 July 2026, which may be linked to the organisation’s goal of achieving $2 trillion in savings. However, the accuracy of this target has not been officially verified, as reported by Newsweek.

Role of DOGE in Government Policy

The Department of Government Efficiency was created through an executive order issued by Donald Trump and has been a key focus of his second administration. Musk has been tasked with leading the initiative, which aims to reduce federal spending by proposing policy changes and efficiency measures.
Since its formation, DOGE has put forward multiple cost-cutting proposals. The department’s policies are expected to contribute to the savings calculations displayed by the DOGE Clock, which will continue to update based on implemented reforms.

Despite its focus on government savings, the DOGE Clock is not an official government tool. It is part of the Department of Government Efficiency Community Meme Project, a separate, community-driven initiative aimed at raising awareness about federal spending and regulation.
The project’s website clarifies that all data displayed on the tracker is "not official" and describes it as a "meme project designed for educational and entertainment purposes." The website also states that the DOGE token associated with the tracker is not intended for financial or investment use.
While the DOGE Clock’s figures are not government-certified, the initiative reflects broader public interest in monitoring federal expenditure and cost-cutting measures introduced under the Trump administration.

President Donald Trump’s recent threats to impose steep tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China from Saturday (Feb 01) have left the world awaiting his next move. If enforced, these measures could trigger a global trade war.
Confirming that Trump will move forward with his threats, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said, "I can confirm that tomorrow, the February 1st deadline that President Trump put into place at a statement several weeks ago continues."
During a speech from the Oval Office on Thursday (Jan 30), Trump said that he was ready to halt imports from Canada and Mexico, two of the United States’ closest allies and largest trading partners.

Trump said that tariffs would commence at 25% and “may or may not rise with time.” However, he suggested that oil imports might be exempt.
Trump also said that he'll impose 10% tariffs on China. Beyond targeting Canada, Mexico, and China, he has threatened 100% tariffs on BRICS nations if they attempt to replace the US dollar as the world’s dominant reserve currency.

Trump’s tariffs to hit Canada, Mexico and China: Why should Americans be worried?

Aides to Elon Musk, who have been put in charge of the US government's human resources agency, have reportedly blocked career civil servants from accessing computer systems containing the personal details of millions of federal employees, according to sources cited by Reuters.

Since taking office just 11 days ago, President Donald Trump has launched an extensive revamp of the government, dismissing hundreds of civil servants to reduce bureaucracy.
Musk, tasked by Trump with cutting down the civilian government workforce, which consists of 2.2 million employees, has wasted no time in appointing allies to key positions within the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
Two officials, who spoke to Reuters anonymously due to fear of retaliation, revealed that some senior career employees at OPM have had their access revoked to certain data systems. These include the Enterprise Human Resources Integration database, which holds sensitive information such as dates of birth, Social Security numbers, home addresses, pay grades, appraisals, and length of service of government workers.

"We have no visibility into what they are doing with the computer and data systems," one official told Reuters.
"That is creating great concern. There is no oversight. It creates real cybersecurity and hacking implications," they added.
While affected officials can still access functions such as email, they are now unable to view the extensive datasets covering all aspects of the federal workforce.

An American Airlines flight and a Black Hawk military helicopter collided and crashed into the Potomac River near Washington DC late Wednesday night (Jan 29) taking the lives of 67 people.
Investigators have recovered the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from the American Airlines flight. A probe is underway to ascertain the cause of the crash, which was the deadliest air disaster in the US since 2001 and the first fatal crash involving an American airliner in nearly 15 years.

A preliminary report of the incident is expected within 30 days. Even though the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said that it is “too early to tell” whether the crash resulted from human or mechanical error, politicians and even the President of the United States Donald Trump are pulling no stops to find someone to blame for the incident.

DEI hires, Biden, Obama are to blame for the crash: Donald Trump

During a press briefing on Thursday, President Donald Trump said he believed that the crash "looks like it should have been prevented." He placed blame on past Democratic administrations of Joe Biden and Barack Obama, claiming that they had lowered hiring standards for air traffic controllers.
Trump also appeared to blame diversity hires for the crash saying, “The FAA diversity push includes a focus on hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities. That is amazing.”

“I am not blaming the controller. So we don’t know, but we do know that you had two planes at the same level. You had a helicopter and a plane. That shouldn’t have happened,” Trump said.
However, he admitted that he was unsure who was directly responsible for the disaster.
Trump's comments drew criticism from Democrats, with Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, saying “It’s one thing for internet pundits to spew off conspiracies, it’s another for the President of the United States to throw out idle speculation as bodies are still being recovered."

Experts cite airspace protocol failures and air traffic control confusion

Flight path data shows that helicopters and aeroplanes operate on separate routes in the area, but these paths converge near Reagan National Airport. The American Airlines jet had been given clearance to land and, therefore, had the right of way.
Retired Lt. Col. Darin Gaub, a former Black Hawk pilot, told the New York Post that multiple factors contributed to the disaster.
“This is a two-part issue,” he said.

“Was there a failure to follow established procedures in DC airspace, and was there a failure in air traffic control communication?” he added.

Vague air traffic control instructions may have misled Black Hawk pilot

Video footage of the crash shows another aircraft taking off at the same time that the American Airlines jet was descending.
Instead of giving precise instructions, the controller reportedly asked the military pilot if he saw the “CRJ”, referring only to the aircraft type, without specifying its exact location.
“The language should be much clearer,” Gaub said. “Normally, a controller would say something like, ‘Black Hawk, do you see the aircraft at your 11 o’clock, five miles out, moving north?’”
Vague instructions may have led the Black Hawk pilot to look in the wrong direction. “That kind of general call isn’t enough in a crowded airspace,” Gaub said.
Former Air Force pilot and Congressman Adam Kinzinger defended the air traffic controllers, stating in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) that “air traffic control did its job” by alerting the Black Hawk of the approaching jet.

Military pilot’s actions under scrutiny in crash investigation

However, experts believe the military pilot could have been responsible for the crash.
“Why didn’t he turn? Why didn’t he even slow down?” Gaub questioned. “Something caused him not to see that aircraft … so I’d just like to know why they didn’t deviate from their flight course at all—whether in speed or altitude.”

Black Hawk pilot, ATC missteps, Obama, or DEI hiring: Who's really to blame for the Washington DC plane crash?

American surgeon and public health expert Dr Atul Gawande has criticised the Trump administration's decision to implement a 90-day “Stop Work Order” on foreign assistance. The order is part of a broader policy review to align foreign aid with President Trump’s priorities. The order stops billions of dollars in vital aid and disrupts key health initiatives around the globe. In a post on social media platform X, Gawande said that the freeze could impact efforts to control deadly disease outbreaks. These include diseases such as the Marburg virus in Tanzania and a deadly Mpox variant in West Africa. The suspension also halts monitoring of bird flu in 49 countries.

90 million children, women at risk! Researcher sounds alarm on serious damage as US freezes foreign aid

The US Senate on Saturday confirmed South Dakota governor Kristi Noem to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a key agency in President Donald Trump's push to clamp down on illegal immigration.
The vote came a day after US lawmakers narrowly confirmed former Fox News co-host Pete Hegseth to be Pentagon chief, adding to previous national security posts already greenlit for Trump's cabinet, including the secretary of state and CIA director.
Noem, 53, a Trump ally and second-term governor of the north central US state, takes control of the US agency overseeing border enforcement and migrant deportations, but which also leads federal efforts on cybersecurity, terrorism, and emergency management.

Trump on Friday said he would sign an order seeking to scrap the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after he harshly criticised its response to two devastating hurricanes during last year's election campaign.
Noem is best known internationally for sinking her chances of being Trump's vice-presidential pick with her cheerful admission that she had shot her dog, Cricket, because it was "untrainable."
She is also known for making South Dakota—far from the border with Mexico—among the first Republican-led states to send National Guard troops to the frontier, earning plaudits from conservatives.
During her confirmation hearing last week, Noem said the southern border would be a top priority, asserting America's "responsibility to secure our borders against those who would do us harm," while stressing that the system must be fair and lawful.

Noem was also asked at the hearing to address the distribution of disaster aid.
She vowed "there will be no political bias to how disaster relief is delivered to the American people."
But Trump on Friday, after expressing his intent to close FEMA, threatened to withhold assistance to California as it faces a historic wave of wildfires unless the Democratic-led state changes its voting laws and environmental regulations.

Noem, 53, a Trump ally and second-term governor of the north central US state, takes control of the US agency overseeing border enforcement and migrant deportations, but which also leads federal efforts on cybersecurity, terrorism, and emergency management.
Exceptions granted for emergency food aid and military aid to Israel, Egypt

Exceptions have been granted just for emergency food aid and military assistance to Israel, which has benefitted from expanded arms packages since the Gaza conflict, and Egypt, a longstanding recipient of US defence funding following its 1979 peace treaty with Israel.
Israel currently receives approximately $3.3 billion annually in foreign military financing, while Egypt’s share is about $1.3 billion.
The memo read, “No new funds shall be obligated for new awards or extensions of existing awards until each proposed new award or extension has been reviewed and approved… as consistent with President Trump’s agenda.”
It further instructs US officials to "immediately issue stop-work orders, consistent with the terms of the relevant award, until such time as the secretary shall determine, following a review."

US President Donald Trump on Friday said that he stands by his decision to terminate the government-provided security detail for Dr Anthony Fauci. The decision follows former president Joe Biden’s last-minute pardon of Fauci on his final day in office, aimed at shielding the former disease expert from potential investigation by the Trump administration. Trump addressed the issue during remarks in North Carolina, saying, “When you work for government, at some point your security detail comes off. You can’t have them forever. So, I think it’s very standard.” Trump further added that he would not take responsibility if threats were made against Fauci, suggesting the former official could fund his own private security. “They all made a lot of money. They can hire their own security, too,” Trump added. The New York Times initially reported the termination of Fauci’s security detail, which had been provided by the National Institutes of Health in response to threats. Fauci had faced criticism and scrutiny from Republican lawmakers during Trump’s presidency, particularly over disagreements regarding the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Senator Rand Paul voiced his support for ending the security detail. He announced on social media that he had submitted information backing the decision. “I wish him nothing but peace, but he needs to pay for his own limos,” Paul posted on X (formerly Twitter). Trump has also previously removed government security for other former officials, including John Bolton, Mike Pompeo, and Brian Hook, who had been provided additional protection due to threats from Iran. Bolton has been a vocal critic of Trump, while Pompeo, who briefly considered a 2024 presidential run, has largely endorsed Trump’s campaign. Fauci, a longtime government infectious diseases expert, was at odds with Trump on several occasions during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been the subject of threats and scrutiny since his tenure.

With the looming deadline set by President Donald Trump's executive order to end birthright citizenship, Indian couples in the United States are urgently scheduling C-sections to ensure their children gain citizenship before February 20, 2025, Indian media reports claimed. Trump's order was issued shortly after his inauguration. The order will end the practice of granting US citizenship to children born in the country to non-citizen parents after February 19. Children born in the US before February 19 will still receive citizenship by birth, prompting a rush among Indian couples, many of whom are on temporary work visas like H-1B and L1, or are awaiting Green Cards. According to a Times of India (TOI) report, Indian couples are contacting doctors in large numbers to schedule preterm C-sections, even if their due dates are still weeks away. Dr. S.D. Rama, a gynaecologist based in New Jersey, mentioned that his clinic had received numerous requests for C-sections, some from women who were only seven months pregnant. One patient, who wasn’t due until March, came in with her husband to sign up for a preterm delivery. This surge is partly driven by the hope that a child born in the US will eventually provide a path to residency for the parents. Till now, children born in the US could apply for Green Cards for their parents once they turn 21. This prospect was highly valued by Indian nationals who have been waiting years for Green Card approval, with some facing a decades-long wait due to the backlog in visa processing. While talking to TOI, Dr. S.G. Mukkala, a Texas-based obstetrician, expressed concern about the risks associated with preterm deliveries. It includes problems such as underdeveloped lungs and neurological complications. He added that in the past few days, he has received inquiries from about 20 couples seeking early deliveries. For illegal immigrants, the implications are even more severe, as the policy shift effectively blocks any future claims to citizenship based on birthright. One couple, illegally living in the US and expecting a child, also expressed disappointment over the new deadline, which has left them uncertain about their future options. As the February 20 deadline approaches, Indian couples across the US are scrambling to ensure their children are born before the cutoff, fearing the potential consequences of the policy change.

On his last full day in office, US President Joe Biden, in an address, remarked on the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, describing it as a significant step towards the ceasefire in the Gaza war. Speaking from North Charleston, South Carolina, Biden confirmed that the ceasefire was in full effect. “Today the guns in Gaza have gone silent,” Biden said. He added that the initial phase of the agreement has begun with the release of three Israeli women held hostage for 470 days, with plans to release 3 additional hostages daily, including two US citizens. The next phase of the agreement would focus on securing the release of Israeli soldiers and negotiating a long-term resolution to the conflict. He also highlighted the ongoing humanitarian efforts, confirming that 100 aid trucks were entering Gaza, with more to follow. “Several hundred trucks are expected to enter the Gaza Strip, probably even as I am speaking,” Biden said, referring to the aid delivery aimed at assisting civilians in the war-torn region. The ceasefire comes after 15 months of Israeli bombardment in response to the October 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas. The prolonged conflict resulted in widespread displacement of civilians in Gaza and significant casualties. Biden acknowledged the challenges of reaching the agreement, describing it as one of the most difficult negotiations of his career. “The road to this deal was not easy; it was a long road,” Biden remarked, crediting the United States’ support for Israel as a key factor in pressuring Hamas to agree to the terms. Biden, a veteran of foreign policy negotiations, defended his administration’s decision to back Israel during the conflict. The Gaza war has till now claimed nearly 50,000 lives. As his presidency comes to a close, Biden noted that the responsibility for implementing the agreement and ensuring its success would lie with the incoming administration. President-elect Donald Trump is set to take office on Monday.

On the eve of his term's conclusion, President Joe Biden visited South Carolina, a state central to his political journey. He was joined by First Lady Jill Biden as the couple attended several Sunday events in the state.
Biden began his day at the Royal Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston, where he worshipped and spoke about the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., aligning his visit with Monday’s federal holiday honouring the civil rights leader.
Following this, the Bidens toured the International African American Museum, located on a site where tens of thousands of enslaved Africans were brought to the U.S. between the late 1760s and 1808.
South Carolina holds a special place in Biden’s political career. His commanding victory in the 2020 Democratic primary, bolstered by endorsements from key allies like Rep. Jim Clyburn, helped revive his campaign after early losses in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada.
Reflecting on that period, Clyburn said, “Joe Biden is showing once again who he is by coming back to the state that really launched him to the Presidency.”
In his farewell remarks, Biden acknowledged the significance of South Carolina’s voters in shaping his path to the presidency. “In 2020, it was the voters of South Carolina who proved the pundits wrong, breathed new life into our campaign, and set us on the path to winning the presidency,” he said.
During his presidency, Biden worked to elevate South Carolina’s role in the Democratic Party. He successfully pushed for the state to lead the party’s nominating process for the 2024 election, a move reflecting its importance in his political journey.
The outgoing US president also shared a farewell video on social media platform X, highlighting the accomplishments of his tenure. Biden wrote, “I'm proud to be handing off an America that is stronger, more prosperous, and more secure."

US Steel and Japan’s Nippon Steel on Monday (Jan 6) filed lawsuits against the government of Joe Biden for his blocking of a merger deal worth up to 14 billion US dollars, multiple American media networks reported. New York Times reported that the lawsuit was filed in a federal court in Washington, accusing Biden and some officials in his administration of 'corrupting the review process for political gain.'
It claimed the steelmakers accused them of harming steel workers and American steel industry over 'national security pretenses', the report said. This is their last effort to revive the attempted merger, which is also opposed by incoming US President Donald Trump. Just as the lawsuit was filed, Trump posted on Truth Social: "Why would they want to sell U.S. Steel now when Tariffs will make it a much more profitable and valuable company? Wouldn’t it be nice to have U.S. Steel, once the greatest company in the World, lead the charge toward greatness again? It can all happen very quickly!"
Biden had blocked the deal last week, citing national security.
A report in The Washington Post said a second lawsuit was filed in which the firms sued another steelmaker Cleveland-Cliffs and its CEO Lourenco Goncalves. That suit also named David McCall, the chief of United Steelworkers Union, as a defendant.
Nippon Steel had earlier said that it is considering taking legal action against the US government after its acquisition proposal was blocked by Biden.
CNN Business had quoted Nippon Steel president Tadashi Imai as saying earlier, "We are considering this as an important option. I think we can take action, including announcing (a response), without taking too much time."
Biden blocked the $13.4 billion acquisition deal on Friday (Jan 3). Both companies called it an overt use of executive authority in the closing days of the Biden administration, which will formally step out when Trump takes the oath of office on January 20.

Imai added, "We are entitled to a proper review. The review process to date and the US government's decision is not a very proper review. Our company cannot allow this to continue. Our company cannot allow this to continue, so we are considering all options for future action."
The deal was announced a year ago and has been opposed by both Democrats and Republicans, including Biden and Trump.
The deal has also been opposed by influential labour unions like United Steelworkers (USW).
The USW commended Biden's decision to block the deal, calling it the right move for the members of the union and national security.
The union added that the recent performance of US Steel, according to their financial performance, shows that the company could remain strong and resilient without the acquisition.
However, the CEO of US Steel, David Burrit, called Biden's decision shameful and corrupt.
US Steel has claimed that it might be forced to shut down its plants and mills if it doesn't get an investment of $2.7 billion. This is the same amount that Nippon Steel has proposed as a part of its purchase.

The Biden administration has informed Congress of a proposed $8 billion arms sale to Israel, according to two US officials, as reported by Reuters. The deal, which includes munitions for fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery shells, requires approval from the House of Representatives and Senate committees. Sources also indicate the package comprises small-diameter bombs, warheads, AIM-120C-8 air-to-air missiles, Hellfire AGM-114 missiles, and 155mm artillery shells, along with $6.75 billion worth of other bombs and guidance systems.

The proposed sale follows an earlier approval in August for $20 billion in fighter jets and military equipment to Israel.

US to initiate major $8 billion defence deal with Israel: Report

US investigators have disclosed new details about the deadly attack in New Orleans’ French Quarter that killed 14 people and injured around 30. Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old former US army soldier, had reportedly planned the attack for weeks.
Investigators said that he booked a rental truck on November 14. Meanwhile, just hours before the incident, he also purchased a cooler in Vidor, Texas, and gun oil in Sulphur, Louisiana.
The attack occurred on early Wednesday on Bourbon Street, a popular area known for its nightlife. Jabbar drove the rented truck into a crowded area, later engaging in a shootout with police before being fatally shot. According to the local police, he wearing a ballistic vest and helmet at the time of the incident.

Investigation

The FBI disclosed that bomb-making materials were discovered in the New Orleans home Jabbar had rented prior to the attack. Authorities also found a transmitter in the rental truck, intended to detonate crude explosive devices planted in the neighbourhood. Two bombs left in coolers several blocks apart were rendered safe, while other devices were determined to be nonfunctional. Jabbar had also attempted to burn down the rented home using accelerants, though the fire extinguished itself before firefighters arrived.
New Orleans police confirmed two officers were injured in the shootout. The number of shots fired by both Jabbar and the police remains under investigation. The city’s Office of the Independent Police Monitor is working to trace “every single bullet” to determine if any struck bystanders. Bourbon Street reopened to the public on Thursday, but the atmosphere was sombre.
A memorial for the victims has grown, with locals and tourists leaving flowers, candles, and prayers. Among the victims were an 18-year-old aspiring nurse, a single mother, and a former Princeton University football player. The New Orleans coroner’s office has identified 13 of the 14 victims, aged 18 to 63, including Edward Pettifer, a British citizen and stepson of Tiggy Legge-Bourke, former nanny to Prince William and Prince Harry.

Explosives discovered at New Orleans attacker's home, say officials

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said on Thursday (January 2) it now believes that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the man behind the deadly New Orleans attack that left 15 dead, including himself, acted alone in the recent attack. The FBI also said that the suspect joined Islamic State before carrying out the attack.
Initially, the FBI had suggested that Jabbar might not have acted alone. However, during a press conference held alongside Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell, Christopher Raia, deputy assistant director of the FBI's counter-terrorism division, shared the latest development in the ongoing probe.

No 'definitive link' between New Orleans attack and cybertruck explosion: FBI

“We cannot ease the grief people in this community and across the nation are feeling at this time,” Raia said. The FBI also said that it did not find any 'definitive link' between the New Orleans attack and the cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas. However, it added that the investigation is still in the early stages.
As per FBI, Jabbar picked up the vehicle used in the attack on 30 December in Houston, Texas, before driving it to New Orleans. During his journey, he uploaded several videos online.
In one video, Jabbar disclosed that he had initially planned to harm his family but decided against it, claiming such an act would not represent the "war between the believers and the disbelievers."

“This was an act of terrorism. It was premeditated and an evil act,” Raia said during the press conference. He added that the suspect’s video recordings indicated that he joined the Islamic State before carrying out the attack.
The FBI said that Jabbar also planted two homemade bombs on Bourbon Street. "We did obtain surveillance footage showing Jabbar placing the devices where they were found," Raia said of the bombs hidden in coolers.
When asked about why Jabbar selected Bourbon Street as the site of the attack, Raia said that investigators assume it is because there would have been a lot of people out on New Year's Eve.
He added that in the coming days, law enforcement will try to figure out the suspect's "path to radicalisation".
"He was 100% inspired by ISIS," Raia added.

New Orleans attack: FBI says Shamsud-Din Jabbar acted solo, no 'definitive link' to cybertruck explosion

The suspect involved in the deadly terrorist attack in New Orleans has been identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, a senior law enforcement source told The Guardian.
Jabbar, aged 42, is a US citizen living in Texas. Reports indicate he has a prior criminal record that includes theft and driving with a suspended licence.

Panama
Panama's president Jose Raul Mulino on Sunday dismissed recent threats made by US President-elect Donald Trump to retake control of the Panama Canal over complaints of "unfair" treatment of American ships.
"Every square metre of the Panama Canal and its adjacent areas belongs to Panama and will continue belonging to Panama," Mulino said in a video posted to X.
Mulino's public comments, though never mentioning Trump by name, come a day after the president-elect complained about the canal on his Truth Social platform.
"Our Navy and Commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way. The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous," he said.

Trump also complained of China's growing influence around the canal, a worrying trend for American interests as US businesses depend on the channel to move goods between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
"It was solely for Panama to manage, not China, or anyone else," Trump said. "We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands!"

Mulino rejected Trump's claims in his video message, though he also said he hopes to have "a good and respectful relationship" with the incoming administration.
"The canal has no direct or indirect control from China, nor the European Union, nor the United States or any other power," Mulino said. "As a Panamanian, I reject any manifestation that misrepresents this reality."
Later on Sunday, Trump responded to Mulino's dismissal, writing on Truth Social: "We'll see about that!"
