The United States military is scheduled to test-fire a hypersonic nuclear missile on Tuesday (Nov 5) within hours after the presidential polls close, according to a report in Express UK. The launch of the unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile is expected between 11:01 pm and 5:01 am (local time) from the US state of California's Vandenberg Space Force Base.

According to US military officials, the test will be conducted to exhibit the "readiness of nuclear US forces" and provide "confidence in the nation's nuclear deterrence".

The officials also stressed that the test launch had nothing to do with the presidential elections as the "test is routine and was scheduled years in advance."

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger also blamed a Russian operation for two non-credible bomb threats that prompted an evacuation of two Fulton County polling places.

Mere coincidence? US to test-fire hypersonic nuclear missile on Election Day, report says

A Hawaii school faced the wrath of angry parents after it was revealed their children were being exposed to ‘biased’ political materials at the hands of teachers that showed former US president and Republican leader Donald Trump in a negative light. The matter came to notice&nbsp;when sixth graders at Kapolei Middle School, in Kapolei, were distributed documents with ‘details’ about the presidential candidates.

The document mentioned that Donald Trump “tried to overturn the 2020 election,” and even accused the Republican presidential nominee of taking immigrant “children away from their parents.”

On the other hand, the document spoke highly of his Democratic rival Kamala Harris, praising her for working to “keep our country a democracy.” On immigration, the document praises Harris for ‘plans to hiring more border guards and limiting how many people can move to the US.'

A Pennsylvania judge has&nbsp;rejected a bid&nbsp;to shut down US billionaire Elon Musk’s $1m lottery&nbsp;scheme in swing states, news agency AP reported Tuesday (Nov 5).

The ruling came after Musk's attorneys stressed that the winners of the scheme&nbsp;are not announced at random&nbsp;but are instead paid spokespeople for the group.

US billionaire Elon Musk Thursday (Oct 31) chose not to appear at a courtroom in Philadelphia over a case brought by District Attorney Larry Krasner that concerns his super PAC's plan to award $1 million a day to voters in key battleground states. The judge, Angelo Foglietta, had earlier ordered all parties to “be present” at his civil courtroom at City Hall for a hearing.

However, earlier on Wednesday, Musk’s lawyers approached the US District Court in Philadelphia, a federal court, and filed a “motion of removal”. Simply put, Musk’s attorneys requested the matter be moved to their jurisdiction – and out of the local Court of Common Pleas. The federal court approved the request, leaving Judge Angelo Foglietta with no jurisdiction over the authority.

As the 2024 US&nbsp;presidential election nears, independent voters are emerging as a key force that could tip the scales. Recent data shows that around 43 per cent&nbsp;of US&nbsp;adults now identify as politically independent, reflecting a trend of disillusionment with the two-party system. These voters are particularly impactful in battleground states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, where small swings could determine the election’s outcome.

The independent voter base is diverse, with notable demographic distinctions. According to recent Reuters/Ipsos polling, a significant portion of independents are young, with 26% being part of Gen Z and 36% Millennials. Many of these younger voters are either just entering the workforce or have incomes below $50,000, which is shaping their views on economic issues like inflation and housing affordability. In fact, 75% of independents say their personal financial situation will be a crucial factor in their vote, though they are slightly less concerned than Republicans (93%) and Democrats (87%) on this front.

With a close race between major candidates, independents’ concerns over specific issues could be decisive. For instance, economic issues, immigration, and healthcare are top priorities for this group. Pew Research data shows that the economy remains a dominant issue, with voters generally favouring candidates they perceive as better able to handle economic and job-related policies. Current polling reveals that 52% of voters trust Donald Trump on economic issues, while Kamala Harris has the edge on social issues, such as abortion, which has grown significantly in importance for independent voters since the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Campaigns are increasingly aware that they need to address independents’ unique concerns to gain their support. Both parties are tailoring their approaches: Republicans are emphasising economic stability and national security, while Democrats focus on healthcare access and climate action. However, independents’ trust in either candidate to unify the country remains low, with fewer than half expressing confidence in Harris or Trump to bridge divides.

For 2024, the impact of independents may come down to candidates’ ability to inspire this group’s belief in the significance of their votes. Only about one-third of independents currently feel their votes will make a difference, suggesting that voter turnout efforts aimed specifically at independents in swing states could be critical. In these battleground areas, even a small turnout bump among independents could sway the results.

As both parties adapt to this growing base, independent voters will likely shape not just the election outcome, but also campaign strategies for years to come. The growing number of Americans opting out of traditional party affiliations signals a lasting shift in the political landscape, making 2024 a pivotal moment for understanding the independent vote’s impact on US&nbsp;democracy.

As the 2024 US presidential election nears, independent voters are emerging as a key force that could tip the scales. Recent data shows that around 43 per cent of US adults now identify as politically independent, reflecting a trend of disillusionment with the two-party system.

Wade. Also read: ABC News 'accidently' airs 'random' US election results showing Harris winning Pennsylvania Campaigns are increasingly aware that they need to address independents’ unique concerns to gain their support. The growing number of Americans opting out of traditional party affiliations signals a lasting shift in the political landscape, making 2024 a pivotal moment for understanding the independent vote’s impact on US democracy.

US elections 2024: How unaffiliated voters could shape the poll outcome

For starters, the history of all US presidents to date can be broadly classified into seven categories; starting right from George Washington belonging to the founding era to modern era President Joe Biden. Let’s have a look at the USA’s presidential history, spanning 46 presidents so far.

The timeline starts in 1789, with President George Washington at the helm. The period from 1789 to 1825 is considered the founding era of the United States, which saw presidents like John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe. During this period, America opposed European colonialism.

The next era, from 1825 to 1861, was marked by significant expansions and divisions of the country. This era saw presidents like Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, Millard Fillmore and James Buchanan. It was during this era that the US gained Oregon territory, along with California and New Mexico.

Then came the era of civil war, starting from 1861 to 1877. Abraham Lincoln led the country through the Civil War and also ensured the end of slavery. Lincoln was later assassinated. Other&nbsp;leaders who emerged in this era were Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant. Grant is known for fighting for the rights of African American migrants.

The era of industrialisation came next, lasting from 1877 to 1921, overseen by two presidents: Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. World War 1 happened during this era, leading to the formation of the League of Nations.

The great depression era slammed the brakes on the USA’s economic advance. President Herbert Hoover’s (1929 - 1933) policies were widely criticised in the US during this time. Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933 - 1945) became the next leader and led the country through World War 2.

The era of 1945-1981 is hailed as one of civil rights. Six leaders—Harry Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Jimmy Carter—led the nation in this period. Truman oversaw the nuclear bombing of Japan. Kennedy witnessed the Cuban Missile Crisis and was later assassinated. Nixon is credited for opening ties with China whereas Carter is known for his emphasis on human rights.

The modern era started with President Ronald Reagan (1981 - 1989) and continues to date, with Joe Biden currently occupying the White House. More leaders to have led the nation in this era are George H. W. Bush (1989 - 1993), Bill Clinton (1993 - 2001), George W. Bush (2001 - 2009), Barack Obama (2009 - 2017) and Donald Trump (2017 - 2021). Bush is known for launching a ‘war on terror’ following the 9/11 attacks. US presidential elections 2024: From Washington to Biden, brief history of US presidents

The US economy maintained a solid pace of growth in the third quarter as ebbing inflation and strong wage gains powered consumer spending ahead of a contentious presidential election set to turn on pocketbook issues.

Gross domestic product increased at a 2.8% annualised rate last quarter, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis said in its advance estimate of third-quarter GDP on Wednesday (Oct 30). Economists polled by Reuters had forecast GDP advancing at a 3% pace.

Estimates ranged from a 2.0% pace to a 3.5% rate. The economy grew at a 3% pace in the second quarter. The pace of growth was well above what Federal Reserve officials regard as the non-inflationary growth rate of around 1.8%.

The advance GDP estimate was published less than a week before Americans head to the polls on November&nbsp;5 to choose between Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party candidate, and former President Donald Trump.

Polls show the race is a toss-up. Americans, who consistently say the economy is a top election issue, have chafed at high food and housing costs, even as the economy has defied forecasts of a recession and continues to outperform its global peers.

Surveys of voters have consistently given the edge to Trump when asked who would be a better steward of the economy, including in the latest Reuters/IPSOS poll out on Tuesday.

The report added to annual revisions published last month, which indicated that the economy was much stronger than had been previously estimated. The revisions almost erased the gap between GDP and gross domestic income (GDI), an alternative measure of growth, through the second quarter.

Prior to the revision, some economists had argued that gap suggested economic activity was being overestimated. The economy has stayed resilient despite 5.25 percentage points of interest rate increases in 2022 and 2023 from the US&nbsp;central bank to tame inflation.

The personal consumption expenditures price index, excluding the volatile food and energy components - followed closely by the Fed - rose at a 2.2% rate in the third quarter, sharply slowing from the 2.8% pace in the second quarter.

With inflation nearing the Fed's 2% target, the central bank is now easing policy and last month kicked off that cycle with an unusually large half-percentage-point rate cut.

That reduction in borrowing costs, the first since 2020, lowered the Fed's policy rate to the 4.75%-5.00% range.

US economy expanded 2.8% in Q3 amid surge in consumer spending

As the 2024 U.S. elections approach, millions of Americans are taking advantage of early voting, casting their ballots ahead of Election Day. This surge in participation reflects growing engagement and interest in the electoral process, as voters aim to have their voices heard and make their choices before the final day of voting.

USA Elections 2024: Millions Of Americans Cast Ballots Ahead Of Election Day

The US&nbsp;election campaign, the world’s longest and most expensive, ends next week but it will probably take days before the winner will be announced. No matter whether it will be Democrat Kamala Harris or Donald Trump, a majority of Americans fear a violent aftermath.

According to a poll taken 12 days before November 5, almost two-thirds of those who responded anticipated post-election violence.

Such fears have been stoked by two attempts to assassinate former president Donald Trump, a tsunami of misinformation, increasingly harsh rhetoric and memories of the January 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol in Washington by followers of Trump.

They wanted to stop the peaceful transfer of power, a hallmark of a functioning democracy, from&nbsp;Trump, who claimed the elections were rigged, to Democrat Joe Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris.

Her campaign for the presidency has featured numerous ads with videos of the unprecedented attack on the Capitol as a reminder of the first coup attempt in American history. Crowds waving Trump flags broke through police barriers, smashed windows and rampaged through the halls.

More than 170 police officers were wounded and one died. A rioter was shot by Capitol police as she tried to crawl through a smashed window. Trump was impeached for incitement of insurrection a week before his term officially expired. The Senate acquitted him, falling short of the 60-vote majority needed to convict.

Trump still insists the 2020&nbsp;elections were stolen, called those sentenced to prison terms (around 250) “patriots” and termed January 6, 2021 “a day of love.” Neither Trump nor his running mate, JD&nbsp;Vance, have committed to accept the result of next week’s elections.

Fears of fresh violence are shared by voters of both parties – 70% of Democrats and 59% of Republicans surveyed on how they viewed the election aftermath.

Police in Washington are so concerned about the unrest that Police Chief Pamela Smith has said she plans to draw an additional 4,000 officers from around the country to help maintain order between election day and the new president’s inauguration next January 6.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said the bureaucratic procedures for calling in the National Guard had also changed to make it easier for police to request swift help in the 11-week period between next Tuesday and inauguration day.

Bowser, a Democrat in a thoroughly democratic city, painted different scenarios for post-election events.

No need for police enforcement or the National Guard, she told reporters, if Harris wins to become the first woman president and commander-in-chief in US&nbsp;history. In that case, “the issue is probably a million people will be here who are celebrating and who are in good spirits. But that also presents challenges to make sure everybody can do it safely.”

A string of polls has shown a slight lead for Harris on the popular vote but in America’s antiquated electoral system, the candidate who wins most votes does not necessarily win. In 2016, for example, Hillary Clinton had almost 2.9 million more popular votes than Trump.

But Trump won the Electoral College with 306 votes against Clinton’s 232. Dating back to 1787, the Electoral College has 538 members who function as intermediaries to select the president and vice president. Each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia is allocated electors equal to the number of its representatives and senators.

The system favours small and rural states and in this election, victory depends on the votes of seven “swing states” where surveys show there are still voters who have not decided on which candidate they prefer.

They are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and the number of undecided voters there is thought to be fewer than 200,000, a sliver of the 244 million Americans eligible to vote.

After US elections, America faces dark clouds

United States&nbsp;officials on Friday (Oct 25) blamed ‘Russian actors’ for a viral video allegedly showing mail-in ballots for Republican presidential nominee&nbsp;Donald Trump being destroyed in&nbsp;Pennsylvania, a key battleground state.

The video shows a man deliberately destroying mail-in ballots for Trump from the state’s Bucks County.

However, the video was declared ‘fake’ on Thursday by the Bucks County board of elections. The board said the envelope and other materials seen in the video were not authentic and didn’t belong to them.

On Friday, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released a joint statement, saying the video was a part of the Russian disinformation agenda.

&nbsp;“Russian actors manufactured and amplified a recent video that falsely depicted an individual ripping up ballots in Pennsylvania,” the statement said.

“This Russian activity is part of Moscow’s broader effort to raise unfounded questions about the integrity of the US election and stoke divisions among Americans,” it added.

Researchers like Darren Linvill, co-director of Clemson University’s Media Forensics Hub, also debunked the video and said it was linked to the Kremlin’s disinformation network known as “Storm-1516”.

<h2>Russia ‘undermining’ integrity of US elections</h2>

The joint statement accused Russia of trying to “undermine trust” in the integrity of the 5 November elections.

The US officials said, however, they were expecting Russia and other foreign actors to ramp up such efforts of interference.

American researchers claim that Storm-1516 has previously engaged in producing fake videos targeting the campaigns of Democratic presidential nominee&nbsp;Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz.

US officials believe that apart from Russia, China and Iran are also trying to influence American elections and fan “divisive narratives.”

A statement by ODNI earlier said, “These actors probably perceive that undermining confidence in the elections weakens the legitimacy of our democracy and consequently makes the United States less capable of effectively pursuing policies that are counter to their interests.”

United States officials on Friday (Oct 25) blamed ‘Russian actors’ for a viral video allegedly showing mail-in ballots for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump being destroyed in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state. “Russian actors manufactured and amplified a recent video that falsely depicted an individual ripping up ballots in Pennsylvania,” the statement said. Also read: US presidential election 2024: Can you vote in polls without a permanent address? “This Russian activity is part of Moscow’s broader effort to raise unfounded questions about the integrity of the US election and stoke divisions among Americans,” it added. Researchers like Darren Linvill, co-director of Clemson University’s Media Forensics Hub, also debunked the video and said it was linked to the Kremlin’s disinformation network known as “Storm-1516”. Russia ‘undermining’ integrity of US elections The joint statement accused Russia of trying to “undermine trust” in the integrity of the 5 November elections. The US officials said, however, they were expecting Russia and other foreign actors to ramp up such efforts of interference. Also read: US Presidential Election 2024: Key issues Americans will be voting on American researchers claim that Storm-1516 has previously engaged in producing fake videos targeting the campaigns of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz. US officials believe that apart from Russia, China and Iran are also trying to influence American elections and fan “divisive narratives.” A statement by ODNI earlier said, “These actors probably perceive that undermining confidence in the elections weakens the legitimacy of our democracy and consequently makes the United States less capable of effectively pursuing policies that are counter to their interests.” (With inputs from agencies)

The decision by the Washington Post, an influential newspaper among American elites, to not endorse the Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has now sparked a massive subscription cancellation spree. The Post announced Friday (Oct 25) it will endorse neither Democrat Kamala Harris nor Republican Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential election, in a first in 36 years.&nbsp;

The move didn’t go down well with the Democrat-leaning subscribers of the paper, with more than 2,000 of them cancelling their subscriptions in less than 24 hours. Author Stephen King and Star Trek actor George Takei are among influential Americans who have expressed their frustration by cancelling their WaPo subscriptions.

"After 5 years, I have cancelled my subscription to the Washington Post," announced King, a vocal critic of the Republican Party. George Takei meanwhile launched a tirade against WaPo owner Jeff Bezos, saying: “If Jeff Bezos cowers before power, we the consumers should show him ours by staying off Amazon through the election."

Many have dubbed the decision by the WaPo as a betrayal of the paper’s readers.

But it’s not just the readers whose feelings and emotions have been seemingly hurt by the Post; some staffers too have voiced their anger at the decision.

Robert Kagan, an opinion editor-at-large at the Post, said he was tendering his resignation.

"This is obviously an effort by Jeff Bezos to curry favour with Donald Trump in the anticipation of his possible victory," Robert Kagan was quoted as saying by CNN, another Democrat-leaning news broadcaster.

Karen Attiah, a columnist for the Washington Post, also called the decision “a stab in the back.” The journalists’ union for the WaPo said it was deeply concerned at the move.

A severe outbreak of&nbsp;E.&nbsp;Coli&nbsp;linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounder burgers has expanded to 75 reported cases, mainly in the western United States, authorities said Friday.

The number of hospitalisations has risen to 22, though no additional deaths have been reported beyond that of an elderly patient in Colorado, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

One child and one adult developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that damages blood vessels in the kidneys.

Investigators have yet to confirm a specific ingredient as the contamination source, though they are assessing whether slivered onions or beef patties could be the origin.

A United States federal judge, on Friday (Oct 18), made more than 1,800 pages of previously sealed documents linked to the case involving former US President Donald Trump’s alleged attempts to subvert the 2020 presidential election. However, the recently unsealed documents contain little new information, as most of the pages were either redacted or already known to the public. US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan authorised their release, despite objections from Trump’s legal team. These documents relate to a 165-page motion filed by special counsel Jack Smith, which introduced new evidence against the former president. The released documents serve as an appendix to the previously unsealed motion, where Smith and his team argued that Trump could face criminal charges for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. This lengthy appendix includes records that were mostly redacted and previously available to the public. Hundreds of other pages were withheld entirely, marked only by the word “SEALED” in capital letters, along with basic formal information. One volume includes sealed pages as well as tweets and social media posts by Trump, his campaign, and his allies, some of which were shared during the January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol. Among these posts is Trump’s infamous tweet from that day, which accused the-Vice President Mike Pence of lacking “the courage to do what should have been done” in supporting his efforts to contest the election outcome. Additionally, the documents feature numerous claims of voter fraud during the 2020 election. Prosecutors argue that Trump’s tweets should be admissible in court since they were neither personal or campaign-related, rather than part of his official duties as president. Former US president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is leading big time in some betting markets. Now, the Wall Street Journal has suggested that the lead could very well be ‘manufactured’ to fuel social-media buzz in Trump’s favour.

<h2>‘$30 million bet’</h2>

Despite some polls showing a neck-to-neck fight between Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, the crypto-based prediction market Polymarket shows Trump in the lead with a 60 per cent winning chance.

The trend has pumped excitement among Trump’s supporters, with billionaire Elon Musk writing on X, “More accurate than polls, as actual money is on the line.”

However, the WSJ quoted Miguel Morel, chief executive of Arkham Intelligence, a blockchain analysis firm, as saying that a group of four bettors have pumped $30mn betting in Trump’s favour and “there’s strong reason to believe they are the same entity.

Arkham reported that the four Polymarket accounts were identified as –redi9999 , Theo4, PrincessCaro and Michie— and all were funded by deposits from Kraken, a crypto exchange.

WSJ quoted Adam Cochran, a veteran crypto investor, as alleging that $30mn amount was enough to swing the odds in betting markets and a deep-pocketed individual might be seeking to influence the elections.

“It is by far the most efficient political advertising one can buy,” Cochran said, implying the $30mn betting may be a part of political campaign.

<h2>‘Not necessarily nefarious’</h2>

Notably, neither WSJ nor the experts quoted by it provided evidence that the four bettors were linked to Trump campaign.

In fact, some observers added that these bets may have been placed by a large bettor who is just convinced that Trump will win and there might not be a ‘nefarious activity.’

A man lost his life, and nine others were hurt in a shooting on Saturday (Oct 12) near Tennessee State University, where the school was celebrating homecoming. Authorities suspect at least one of those injured may have been involved in the gunfire, according to officials. The incident happened at around 5 pm on a street where the homecoming parade had taken place earlier that morning, Nashville police and fire officials revealed during a press conference on Saturday evening. The victim who died was a 24-year-old man, police confirmed on X (formerly Twitter). His identity, along with the names of the injured and details about the motive, have yet to be made public. Among the wounded were at least three children, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The injured children included a 12-year-old girl and two 14-year-old girls, who were taken to a local children’s hospital, as stated by Don Aaron, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. The Metro Nashville Police Department posted on X, “A total of 10 gunshot wound victims are now at area hospitals. 5 were transported by NFD. 5 arrived by private vehicles. A 24-year-old man is deceased. 3 non-critical juvenile victims are at Vandy Peds. At least 1 of the injured is suspected to have been involved in the gunfire.” Also read: Is Kamala Harris friendly with Iranian operative Elahi? New report reveals... Metro Nashville Police Commander Anthony McClain clarified that the gunfire did not appear to be directly connected to the events at Tennessee State University, which included the morning parade and other festivities. At the time of the shooting, the school’s homecoming football game was taking place in a different part of the city. Commander McClain said, “It's unfortunate that a few folks ruined it for everybody. "We have to come to a point to stop this violence.” He also noted that the 24-year-old man had died, and the juvenile victims, including two 12-year-olds and a 14-year-old, had sustained non-critical injuries. In a separate event at Nissan Stadium, where the homecoming football game was underway, Tennessee State University officials reported an investigation into shots that were heard at the site. However, police have not yet found any victims of this incident. Nashville’s Mayor Freddie O’Connell took to social media to express his condemnation of the violence. He said, “What was a joyous atmosphere is tonight very different because of a senseless act of violence carried out by people who didn’t care who else might be caught in the crossfire.” He further added, “Sadly, many in our community are familiar with the pain inflicted by gun violence. It hurts anew every time. We’re grateful for our first responders who quickly rendered aid and secured the scene - and sorrowful and prayerful for the victims.” (With inputs from agencies)

Tennessee shooting: One dead, 9 injured in gunfire near Tennessee State University homecoming parade

The death toll from Hurricane Milton rose to at least 16 on Friday, officials in Florida said, as residents began the painful process of piecing their lives and homes back together.

Nearly 2.5 million households and businesses were still without power, and some areas in the path cut through the Sunshine State by the monster storm from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean remained flooded.

Milton crashed into the Gulf Coast late Wednesday as a Category 3 storm, smashing communities still reeling from Hurricane Helene two weeks ago, which killed 237 people across the US southeast, including in Florida.

On Siesta Key, a beautiful barrier island near Sarasota where the storm made landfall, Milton left a desolate landscape.

Some streets were still flooded on Friday. Fallen trees and debris -- sofas, beds, chairs and appliances, much of it left behind by Helene -- were strewn haphazardly on roadsides.&nbsp;

Resident Mark Horner, who moved there six years ago, said while his house was largely spared, the island "got hit really hard" and people were reassessing the future.

But the 67-year-old sounded a note of optimism, telling AFP: "Our paradise will come back. It's just a little shocking to absorb it."

Tornadoes, not floodwaters, were behind many of the storm's deaths.

In Fort Pierce, on Florida's Atlantic coast, four people died in a tornado spawned by Milton.

"They did find some people just outside dead, in a tree," 70-year-old resident Susan Stepp told AFP. "I wish they would have evacuated."

At least six people were killed in St. Lucie County, four in Volusia County, two in Pinellas County, and one each in Hillsborough, Polk, Orange and Citrus counties, officials said.

The storm downed power lines, shredded the roof of the Tampa baseball stadium and inundated homes, but Florida avoided the catastrophic devastation that officials had feared.

"The storm was significant, but thankfully this was not the worst-case scenario," Governor Ron DeSantis told reporters.

The National Weather Service issued a record 126 tornado warnings across the state Wednesday, wrote hurricane expert Michael Lowry.

"It is not easy to think you have everything and suddenly you have nothing," said Lidier Rodriguez, whose Tampa Bay apartment was flooded.

Search operations were ongoing Friday, and the Coast Guard reported the spectacular rescue of a boat captain who rode out the storm clinging to a cooler in the Gulf of Mexico.

"Heavy one-day rainfall events such as the one associated with Milton are 20-30 percent more intense and about twice as likely in today's climate," the World Weather Attribution group of climate scientists said in a report.

Helene had hit his house "like a bomb went off," and he had to swim to a neighbour's house. Milton left less water but more wind damage. "We'll probably sell" and move to a less flood-prone location in the area, he said. "We're just to the age now where moving everything up, moving everything down -- it's just become too much for us." Hurricane Milton: At least 16 dead, millions left without power in Florida as US state reels from deadly storm

Anti-immigration rhetoric has now become central to the election campaign of former US president Donald Trump, who is hoping to secure another four years in the White House by defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in November presidential elections. The GOP leader on Friday (Oct 11) went full throttle against illegal migrants yet again, calling for the death penalty for those who kill US citizens, during a rally in Aurora, Colorado.

Trump also vowed to start a massive campaign, "Operation Aurora", to target the members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua if elected to power.

Trump is hoping to capitalise upon the fact that Illegal immigration is a top voter concern in the US, and opinion polls show Trump is seen by most voters as the best person to be able to address it.

"I'm hereby calling for the death penalty for any migrant that kills an American citizen or a law enforcement officer," Trump said. Notably, the former US leader has already called for death penalty for people convicted of sex trafficking women and children.

Death penalty or capital punishment is rare in US, with almost half of the states already having banned it. There exists a federal death penalty which is hardly used.

Trump in his rally reiterated that he was not against migrants who come to US legally. “We want to have people come into our country, but they have to come in legally,” he said.

But for illegal migrants, Trump had nothing but harsh words. “All across our nation I make this pledge and vow to you. November, 5, 2024, will be Liberation Day in America, (there) will be liberation from what he said was the occupation of the country,” Trump pledged.

West Asia crisis: US, Arab allies in covert talks with Iran for ceasefire on 'all fronts'

Republican presidential candidate and ex-US president Donald Trump on Monday (Oct 7) fueled a major controversy after he doubled down on his anti-immigration rhetoric. The GOP leader said migrants who have committed murders in US did so because “it’s in their genes.” He also blamed them for “a lot of bad genes in our country right now.”

Trump made these remarks during an interview with conservative host Hugh Hewitt. The former president came&nbsp;down heavily&nbsp;on Vice President Kamala Harris, the border czar in the Joe Biden administration.

After successful campaigns in Russia, the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has now reportedly launched hiring drives in China, Iran, and North Korea. The US spy agency on Wednesday (Oct 2) posted instructions in Mandarin, Korean, and Farsi languages; for people to contact CIA operatives “securely”. The agency wants to reach out to ‘dissatisfied’ individuals in these nations who are willing to contact them with potentially useful information.

The messages were posted on Telegram, Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube by the CIA, asking people to contact the agency via public channels or dark web sites.

"We want to make sure individuals in other authoritarian regimes know that we’re open for business," a CIA spokesman said in a statement.

Earlier, similar messages were shared by the US agency in the Russian language on Russian media platforms after Moscow launched invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It is to be noted that China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran are viewed as ‘hard targets’ by the CIA, where it is difficult for the agency to operate due to measures taken by the local regimes. That has propelled the US agency to look for local volunteers to aid the agency.

CIA instructions clearly mention how people can contact agency operatives without putting their lives in danger.

Iran-Israel War: Iran Warns Israel Against Counterattack

At least 100 people have been killed after destructive floods ripped through the US southeast, officials said Monday, with the emergency response effort fast becoming a political football in a region that could decide the presidential election.

Rescue operations sought to find survivors and deliver supplies across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee in areas where torrential rains brought by Hurricane Helene caused havoc.

Residents face power cuts, supply shortages, blocked roads and broken communication lines in often mountainous terrain.

Republican candidate Donald Trump will on Monday visit Valdosta in Georgia -- an epicenter of the flooding and destruction and also a key state in the tight election being held in just five weeks' time.

Trump's Democrat opponent Vice President Kamala Harris cancelled campaign events to return to Washington for a briefing on the federal response, while President Joe Biden was due to speak on Monday morning from the White House.

Biden, who has approved federal aid for several states in the wake of the disaster, plans to travel to hard-hit areas this week, "as soon as it will not disrupt emergency response operations," the White House said Sunday, adding that Harris would do the same.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said Monday that hundreds of roads had been destroyed and many communities "wiped off the map."

"This is an unprecedented storm," he told reporters. "We're working to surge supplies in. The emotional and physical toll here is indescribable.

"Rivers are still rising, so the danger is not over."

He said the long-term rebuilding plan would need to confront a reality of more extreme weather, "but right now, we're concentrating on saving lives and getting supplies to people who desperately need them."

Scientists say climate change likely plays a role in the rapid intensification of hurricanes, because there is more energy in warmer oceans for them to feed on.

At least 100 people were killed -- 39 in North Carolina, 25 in South Carolina, 17 in Georgia, 14 in Florida, four in Tennessee, and one in Virginia, according to tallies from local authorities compiled by AFP. That total was expected to rise.

Nearly two million households and businesses remained without power on Monday, according to tracker poweroutage.us.

Helene slammed into Florida's northern Gulf shore as a huge Category Four hurricane late on Thursday night with winds of 140 miles (225 kilometres) per hour.

Even as it weakened, it tore a path of destruction stretching inland more than 500 miles.

During an address to world leaders in New York on Wednesday (September 25), US President Joe Biden seemed to be confused, mistakenly welcoming them to Washington instead of Midtown Manhattan, where the event was taking place. 'Welcome to Washington' "Thank you, thank you, thank you. Welcome to Washington," Biden, 81, said at the InterContinental New York Barclay Hotel, where the gathering was held. This latest slip-up adds to concerns about the president’s mental wellbeing, which had previously prompted him to withdraw from the 2024 presidential campaign. The event coincided with the United Nations General Assembly, which took place earlier in the week in New York, where Biden also delivered an address. YouTube has removed several right-wing political channels, including Tenet Media and four other channels associated with right-wing media entrepreneur Lauren Chen. This action follows allegations from the United States Department of&nbsp;Justice (DOJ)&nbsp;that Russian government employees were paying US right-wing influencers to create content.

A YouTube spokesperson stated on Thursday that the channels were removed as part of the platform's "ongoing efforts to combat coordinated influence operations."

The Justice Department indicted two employees from the Russian government-supported media outlet RT, formerly known as Russia Today, on Wednesday. They are accused of illegally financing a Tennessee-based media group.

Although Tenet Media is not named directly in the indictment, a quote from Tenet's YouTube channel listed in the indictment suggests it may be the targeted media group. Some right-wing influencers have since identified Tenet as the company in question.

Prosecutors claim the founders of the media company in the indictment were aware their funding came from Moscow and privately acknowledged this in their communications.

YouTube was a primary platform for Tenet Media's videos and was popular among traditional media figures, including those who have worked with Tenet, such as Tim Pool, Benny Johnson, and Dave Rubin.

Tim Pool took to&nbsp;X (formerly Twitter) and said,&nbsp;"If these allegations are true, then I, along with other personalities and commentators, were deceived and are victims. I can't speak for others at the company about their actions or instructions. However, we still do not know what is true since these are only allegations. Putin is a scumbag, Russia sucks donkey b****."

Benny Johnson commented, "A year ago, a media startup approached my company to provide content as an independent contractor. Our lawyers arranged a standard, arms-length deal, which was later ended. We are alarmed by the allegations in today’s indictment, which suggest that I and other influencers were victims of this alleged scheme. My lawyers will address anyone who suggests otherwise."

Following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, YouTube also removed RT’s globally popular channels from the platform.

US: YouTube removes right-wing channels amid allegations of Russian influence

Months after a photo of Cameron Yaste, commander of the destroyer USS John McCain, went viral and landed him in trouble, he&nbsp;has been relieved of duty, according to an official statement from the US Navy. In the photo that caused this situation, commanding officer Yaste was seen firing a rifle with a scope mounted backwards.

As per the Navy's statement, Commander Yaste&nbsp;has been relieved of his duties&nbsp;“due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command the guided-missile destroyer,”&nbsp;which is currently stationed in the Gulf of Oman and is helping protect the San Diego-based aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt.

In their statement, the Navy stressed that it “holds commanding officers to the highest standards and holds them accountable when those standards are not met.”

In April, the US Navy shared a photo on its official Instagram account showing Cameron Yaste in a firing position, but with the rifle scope mounted backwards. The post quickly gained traction online, prompting the Marine Corps to take a dig at the Navy by sharing a photo on their own Instagram page. The picture showed Yaste&nbsp;using a properly mounted rifle scope, along with the caption, "Clear Sight Picture."

The Navy took down the picture later and acknowledged their mistake and thanked online users for pointing out the error. "Thank you for pointing out our rifle scope error in the previous post. The picture has been removed until EMI (extra military instruction) is completed," the Navy wrote.

As per the US Navy, Captain Allison Christy, the deputy commodore of Destroyer Squadron 21 will temporarily take over Cameron Yaste's post. Destroyer Squadron 21, which is part of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, is currently stationed in the Gulf of Oman.

Four Indians were burned to death in USA’s Texas last week in a fatal crash involving five vehicles. The group had connected through a carpooling app and was travelling to Bentonville in Arkansas. The Collin County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the crash took place near White Street at around 3:30 pm local time on August 31.

Media reports say a speeding truck rear-ended the SUV the four Indians were travelling in. After the crash, the vehicle erupted into flames and their bodies were charred. Authorities were examining DNA fingerprinting and teeth and bone remains to identify the bodies of the victims.

"DNA fingerprinting will be done to identify the bodies, and the samples will be matched with the parents," local authorities said.

<h2>Who are the four victims?</h2>

A NDTV report identified the victims as Aryan Raghunath Orampati, Farooq Shaik, Lokesh Palacharla and Darshini Vasudevan.
