Former United States President Donald Trump, in his latest Truth Social post, raised doubts about Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris' eligibility to run for the presidency.

Former United States President Donald Trump, in his latest Truth Social post, raised doubts about Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris' eligibility to run for the presidency. He said that Harris securing the Democratic Party's nomination without winning the primary poses a "threat to democracy." Trump posted these comments on his Truth Social platform, where he referred to Harris as the "Weakest Presidential Candidate in History on Crime." 'Threat to Democracy' In his post, Trump stated, "Kamala Harris is the Weakest Presidential Candidate in History on Crime. She's allowed millions of people to pour through our Borders, many from prisons, mental institutions and, indeed, terrorists, coming in at levels never seen before. "What gives her the right to run for President? She got no votes to Biden's 14 Million. She failed in her previous attempt, was the first one out of 22 people to quit, never made it to Iowa, and now she's a Presidential Candidate? This is a Threat to Democracy!" Joe Biden was taken out by coup Earlier this week, during a news conference at the US-Mexico border in Arizona, Trump referred to Harris replacing Biden as the presumptive Democratic candidate as a "coup." He commented, "It's a very sad time for this country in many ways. We had a candidate—I was no fan of Joe Biden—but the way he was taken out was a coup." Kamala Harris leading against Trump by 3.7 points According to a recent analysis by the election website FiveThirtyEight, published on Friday (Aug 23), Harris holds a 3.7-point lead over Trump. Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris is set to deliver the most pivotal speech of her career on Thursday (Aug 22) as she officially accepts the Democratic Party's nomination for the upcoming presidential election at the ongoing Democratic National Convention (DNC).

A campaign official told the Associated Press that Harris has three primary goals for her address. Additionally, she aims to inspire a sense of national pride.

In her upcoming speech, Harris, 59, will also reportedly reflect on her upbringing as the daughter of a Jamaican father and Indian mother. She will outline her plans to address rising living costs and promote personal freedoms, including abortion rights, campaign officials told Reuters. They also mentioned that she would strongly criticise Trump.

Jake Sullivan, the national security advisor to United States President Joe Biden, will visit China next week, the White House said on Friday (August 23). This visit could be a step to manage the differences and avoid escalating tensions between the two nations.

Sullivan's trip to Beijing, scheduled from August 27 to 29, will be the first by a US national security advisor to China since 2016.

Other high-ranking officials from the Biden administration, such as Secretary of State Antony Blinken, have made visits to Beijing in the last two years. Though Sullivan has engaged in talks with Chinese officials on several occasions, this visit will be his first to China.

According to media reports, this high-profile visit could pave the way for another in-person meeting between Biden and China's President Xi Jinping later this year.

The two leaders met last November in northern California, where they held hours-long discussions. Xi also had lunch and took a walk in the garden with Biden. The meeting was seen as an attempt to stabilise the often tense relationship between the two countries.

This will be Sullivan’s first visit to China in his role as national security advisor. The planned discussions are part of a broader series of diplomatic efforts aimed at bringing stability to US-China relations.

The talks, expected to cover a wide range of strategic issues, come on the heels of Beijing’s decision to suspend discussions with Washington on nuclear safety and security. In July, China announced it had halted early-stage arms-control talks with Washington.

A senior US official on Friday told reporters that the US president's stance on Beijing remains firm, despite the upcoming visit by his security advisor and emphasised that the Biden administration still views the relationship with China as highly competitive.

“We are committed to making the investments, strengthening our alliances, and taking the common step on tech and national security that we need to take,” the official said.

The official added, “We are committed to managing this competition responsibly, however, and preventing it from veering into conflict.”

The US has been continuously cracking down on American technology transfers to China and has sanctioned many companies and individuals under the same effort.

Severe rain in southwestern Connecticut on Sunday led to mudslides, road washouts, and flash floods, while storms over New York City caused delays in flights and train services.

The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings and emergencies in Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield, and Hartford Counties, as overflowing rivers breached their banks, with more storms expected.

Emergency teams conducted numerous water rescues, particularly in Southbury, and several mudslides were noted, according to the Weather Service.

New York City also faced heavy downpours on Sunday evening, grounding flights at major airports in the region. Officials cautioned about strong wind gusts, and flash flood warnings were put in place for Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, and several counties north and west of the city. Social media videos showed water pouring from Chelsea Market's ceiling.

The storm system was unrelated to Hurricane Ernesto, which, though far from land, was posing a threat to the East Coast with dangerous swells and rip currents.

US House of Representatives Republicans issued a report on Monday alleging Democratic President Joe Biden committed impeachable offenses, but it was unclear whether they would push for a vote following a probe the White House has long dismissed as politically motivated.

A 291-page report by three House committees alleged that Biden profited from an influence-peddling scheme to enrich himself and members of his family through foreign business dealings beginning in 2014, when he was vice president.

"The committees present this information to the House of Representatives for its evaluation and consideration of appropriate next steps," the report said.

It was not clear if Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson would schedule a vote to impeach Biden in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 5 election, in which Republican Donald Trump is locked in a tight battle with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Biden accused of impeachable offences by House Republicans in 291-page report

Former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump has once again stirred up a controversy with personal attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump commented on Vice President Kamala Harris’ appearance, despite pressure from GOP allies to concentrate on policy issues instead of personal attacks.

During a rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on Saturday (August 17), Trump deviated from his prepared speech to draw a comparison between his appearance and that of the Democratic presidential nominee.

"I say that I am much better looking. I'm a better-looking person than Kamala," said Trump.

Trump was apparently reacting to a Wall Street Journal column that mentioned Harris’s appearance as a political strength. He also claimed he mistook a Time Magazine cover illustration of Harris for actresses Sophia Loren or Elizabeth Taylor.

“You’re not allowed to say this anymore. You know, David, don’t ever get caught in this trap,” Trump advised Republican Senate candidate David McCormick, who was in the audience. “David, please don’t ever call a woman beautiful, because that will be the end of your political career.”

Social media users mocked Trump for focusing on personal insults. This is not the first time the Republican nominee has directed personal attacks at Harris.

Trump has often referred to Harris as a "radical liberal" and called her by multiple names, including "Kamabla," "Lyin' Kamala," and "Laffin Kamala."

At a news conference held at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club, Trump defended his decision to criticise Harris on a personal level.

"I think I am entitled to personal attacks. I don't have a lot of respect for [Harris]. I don't have a lot of respect for her intelligence, and I think she'll be a terrible president," Trump said.

Trump tried to justify his stance by accusing Harris of using the justice system against him and others. He also claimed that Harris had called him "weird." However, it was actually her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who initially described Republican policies as "weird" in late July.

You know, David, don’t ever get caught in this trap,” Trump advised Republican Senate candidate David McCormick, who was in the audience. “David, please don’t ever call a woman beautiful, because that will be the end of your political career.” Social media users mocked Trump for focusing on personal insults. This is not the first time the Republican nominee has directed personal attacks at Harris. (With inputs from agencies)

Former United States President Donald Trump has come under fire for claiming that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is "much better" than the highest US military decoration Medal of Honor.

Former United States President Donald Trump has come under fire for claiming that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is "much better" than the highest US military decoration Medal of Honor. Al Lipphardt, commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), slammed former president Trump for "asinine" comments regarding the Medal of Honor award. What did Donald Trump say? At a New Jersey campaign event on Thursday (Aug 15), Trump ignited controversy by claiming the Presidential Medal of Freedom is a "better" award than the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the US Armed Forces. The Medal of Honor is given to service members who show "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty." In contrast, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is given to civilians for "exceptional contributions to the security or national interests of America, to world peace, or cultural or other significant public or private endeavours." Trump compared the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Medal of Honor, stating, "It's the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor. But the civilian version, it's actually much better because everyone that gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, they're soldiers." VFW, Kamala Harris' campaign hit at Trump VFW National Commander Al Lipphardt condemned Trump's remarks on Friday (Aug 16), which compared the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Medal of Honor, according to The Hill. Lipphardt called the former president's comments as "asinine," stating that they "not only diminish the significance of our nation's highest award for valour but also crassly characterised the sacrifices of those who have risked their lives above and beyond the call of duty." Spokesperson Sarafina Chitika remarked that voters "owe it to our service members" not to choose Trump. She added, "Donald Trump knows nothing about service to anyone or anything but himself." “For him to insult Medal of Honor recipients, just as he has previously attacked Gold Star families, mocked prisoners of war, and referred to those who lost their lives in service to our country as ‘suckers’ and ‘losers,’ should remind all Americans that we owe it to our service members, our country, and our future to make sure Donald Trump is never our nation’s commander in chief again,” she added. The Biden administration has decided to lift a ban on US sales of offensive weapons to Saudi Arabia, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday, reversing a three-year-old policy to pressure the kingdom to wind down the Yemen war.

The administration briefed Congress this week on its decision to lift the ban, a congressional aide said. One source said sales could resume as early as next week, while another said deliberations on timing were still under way.

"The Saudis have met their end of the deal, and we are prepared to meet ours, returning these cases to regular order through appropriate congressional notification and consultation," a senior Biden administration official said.

He'll rubber stamp Kamala's GREEN NEW SCAM and light TRILLIONS of dollars on fire," former President Donald Trump wrote. “It’s no surprise that San Francisco Liberal Kamala Harris wants West Coast wannabe Tim Walz as her running-mate — Walz has spent his governorship trying to reshape Minnesota in the image of the Golden State,” Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. Watch | US elections: Kamala Harris vs Donald Trump, who will Americans choose? × “From proposing his own carbon-free agenda to suggesting stricter emission standards for gas-powered cars, and embracing policies to allow convicted felons to vote, Walz is obsessed with spreading California’s dangerously liberal agenda,” Leavitt’s statement said. Walz, formerly a House member, unexpectedly rose to prominence and won favour by frequently referring to Republicans as “weird,” a phrase enthusiastically embraced by Harris's campaign. The choice has been well-received by both progressive and moderate Democrats. This week, Harris and Walz will visit several key states, starting on Tuesday in Philadelphia. Trump pulls no punches, says Harris’ VP pick Tim Walz will ‘unleash hell on earth’

As per a recent report, executives from Google, Netflix, and OpenAI are planning a fundraiser for Harris in Washington, DC, later this month.

A Business Insider report suggests that an important event is set for August 27, right as the US election campaigns gain momentum before the November finale.

As per the report, the organising committee includes policy leaders from Google, Netflix, and OpenAI, as well as high-ranking members from JPMorgan, McKinsey & Company, and the Omidyar Network, which was founded by eBay's Pierre Omidyar.

The substantial support from the tech industry may be a calculated move to offset the endorsements that Republican nominee Donald Trump has received from prominent tech titans, including Elon Musk of SpaceX and Tesla, Peter Thiel, the co-founder of Palantir, the Winklevoss twins, John Paulson, and others.

Furthermore, Silicon Valley's stance could be further influenced by Trump's choice for vice president, Ohio Senator JD Vance, a former venture investor with connections to the IT and cryptocurrency industries.

When Joe Biden announced he was stepping down, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman quickly showed his support for Kamala Harris. Earlier, prominent Democratic donors hesitated to support Biden for a second term because of worries about his public mistakes and mental sharpness. But attitudes changed when Harris entered the race.

Soon after, Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings also endorsed Harris and donated $7 million to her campaign following former President Barack Obama’s endorsement.

On the same day, a new site called "VCs for Kamala" was launched, listing over a hundred venture capitalists who have pledged their support and financial backing for her, according to Business Insider.

According to the report, Josh Hsu, who was once Harris's senior White House lawyer, and Rohini Kosoglu, a former vice president's domestic policy advisor, would also be present at the August fundraiser.

American woman scores big: Makes $80K dumpster diving find

Complex negotiations spanning over months finally led to a 24-person prisoner swap, one of the largest since the end of the Cold War — among the U.S., Russia, Germany and three other Western countries, on Thursday.

The Biden administration on Thursday announced it had secured the release of three American prisoners in Russia: Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, Marine veteran Paul Whelan and Russian-American radio journalist Alsu Kurmasheva.

Gershkovich, Whelan and Kurmasheva, imprisoned by the Kremlin, were exchanged for Russians, including a convicted murderer, held in the US and Europe. In all, eight Russians were released in the swap deal, among which three were being held in U.S. prisons: Vadim Konoshchenok, Vladislav Klyushin and Roman Seleznyov.

Two Russians held in Slovenia, one in Poland and another in Norway are also headed home. They all were known to have suspected ties to Russian intelligence.

The prisoner exchange is said to have taken place on Thursday on a tarmac in Ankara, Turkey.

During a White House briefing with the families of the US citizens incarcerated in Russia, President Joe Biden shared that they had spoken with the recently freed prisoners via phone, that they have left Russia and are heading to the US. He expressed his gratitude to the allies involved in the challenging negotiations.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump slammed a reporter for asking him why Black voters should trust him during an appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists' annual convention in Chicago on Wednesday (July 31).

ABC's Rachel Scott questioned the former president about why Black voters should trust him despite his past comments where he called Black journalists 'losers' and 'stupid'.

"You have used words like 'animal' and 'rabid' to describe Black district attorneys. You've attacked Black journalists—calling them losers, saying the questions that they asked are quote, 'stupid' and 'racist'. "Why should Black voters trust you after you have used language like that?" Scott asked.

She called it the "elephant in the room" after expressing gratitude to Trump for attending and pointing out that many people believed he shouldn't be at the convention.

"First of all, I don't think I have ever been asked a question in such a horrible manner, the first question. You don't even say Hello! how are you? Are you with ABC? Because I think they are a fake news network and a terrible network. And I think it's disgraceful that I came here in good spirits. I love the Black population of this country. I have done so much for the Black population of the country, including employment...," Trump responded.

The United States on Tuesday (July 30) imposed sanctions on five individuals and seven companies from China and Iran for allegedly supporting Tehran’s missile and drone programs.

The United States on Tuesday (July 30) imposed sanctions on five individuals and seven companies from China and Iran for allegedly supporting Tehran’s missile and drone programs. According to a statement from the US Treasury Department, these sanctions target people and businesses in China, Hong Kong, and Iran that were involved in providing key components to entities affiliated with Iran’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL). The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control stated that those affected by the sanctions acquired "various components, including accelerometers and gyroscopes, which are crucial for Iran’s ballistic missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) programs." The Treasury also claimed that one of the sanctioned Iranian companies, Electro Optic Sairan Industries, played a role in developing the Shahed-series UAVs at the Shahed Aviation Industries Research Center. These UAVs, according to the US government agency, are "being used by Russian forces in Ukraine." Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson said, "Today's action exposes additional key front companies and trusted agents through which Iran has sought to acquire these components." Also read: China alarmed as US tests 'Quicksink' bomb to rein in bellicose PLA Navy In 2007, the US labelled the Iranian Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics as a threat due to its involvement with weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems. The United States will continue to impose costs on those that facilitate Iran’s ability to produce these deadly weapons,” Nelson said. Women in the United States are increasingly being driven to "DIY abortion," such as alcohol consumption, the use of herbs and even physical harm in an attempt to terminate their pregnancies themselves.

After the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in June 2022, women attempting self-managed abortions increased from 2.4 per cent before to 3.3 per cent, according to the study.

Published in JAMA Network Open, the study surveyed women of reproductive age before and after the Supreme Court's decision. Researchers questioned around 7,000 women six months prior and 7,100 women a year later to gauge the rise in self-managed abortions.

“Our data show that making abortion more difficult to access does not reduce the desire or need for it,” Lauren Ralph, an epidemiologist at the University of California, San Francisco, and one of the study’s authors said.

The research found several of the factors that influenced women to self-manage their abortions. These may include privacy, concerns over the high cost of clinical services or a desire to attempt self-managed abortion prior to pursuing formal medical care.

The approaches taken by women were radically different. Others used nonprescription drugs like the morning-after pill (levonorgestrel) and several abortion pills including misoprostol, mifepristone or both. Still others resorted to alcohol or drugs, or harmed themselves physically, hitting their belly or lifting heavy items.

Some women reported bleeding and pains that made them go to hospitals. Other findings were that the pregnancies came to an end after the procedures, while others continued if the measures were not effective.

According to the study, some women would then go to clinics for abortions, and in other cases, they miscarried.

“The findings confirm what we’ve been saying all along: If you make it difficult to obtain an abortion through formal channels, people will resort to informal methods," the study's authors said.

What was the Roe v Wade case about?

The 1973 Roe v Wade judgement provided a foundation for legal abortion in the United States. Jane Roe, an unmarried pregnant woman, challenged Texas' abortion ban.

The court ruled in her favour, saying, "The United States Constitution provides a fundamental 'right to privacy' that protects a person's right to choose whether to have an abortion. The abortion right is not absolute. It must be balanced against the government's interests in protecting health and prenatal life."

The Court overturned the ruling in the Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organisation case in 2022, eliminating the 'constitutional' right to abortion.

It must be balanced against the government's interests in protecting health and prenatal life." The Court overturned the ruling in the Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organisation case in 2022, eliminating the 'constitutional' right to abortion. (With inputs from agencies)

Gun violence: A public health crisis in US

Gun violence remains a serious problem in the United States and was recently labelled a public health crisis by US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. In a new advisory released on Tuesday, he noted that gun violence has been the leading cause of death for Americans aged 1 to 19 since 2020, surpassing vehicle accidents, poisoning (including drug-related incidents), and cancer.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that Florida saw 3,232 firearm deaths in 2022, the latest year for which data is available, giving it a death rate of 14, the same as Wisconsin. The lowest rates of gun deaths were in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, at 3.1 and 3.7 respectively. In contrast, New Mexico (27.3), Louisiana (28.2), and Mississippi (29.6) had the highest rates of gun-related fatalities.

A Hawaii man identified as a new suspect in a 1991 murder case allegedly died by suicide last week after police took a DNA swab from him, news agency AP reported. Police traced him through a DNA sample that was taken from a discarded fork. Then, police went to his home last week to test the sample against a swab taken in person, the lawyers revealed Sunday (Jul 28) in court documents.

The 1991 murder case

A Virginia woman was sexually assaulted and killed in Hawaii more than three decades ago. The woman, Dana Ireland, was found dead on Christmas Eve in 1991 on Hawaii's Big Island.

The 23-year-old woman was found barely alive in the bushes along a fishing trail in Puna, a remote section of the island.

US: New suspect in 1991 murder case 'kills himself' after police take his DNA sample

As a propeller plane on Thursday whirred towards the US-Mexico border to cross illegally, US agents raced to meet it at a small municipal airport near El Paso, Texas, and arrest two men who were part of Mexican drug trafficking royalty.

The son of jailed former Sinaloa Cartel kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman planned to give himself up upon landing. The other passenger - legendary septuagenarian trafficker Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada – did not and was duped into getting on the plane by the younger man, according to two current and two former US officials familiar with the situation.

Zambada's arrest followed lengthy surrender talks between US authorities and El Chapo's son, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the sources said. But many American officials had given up hope on Joaquin turning himself in, and were caught unaware when he sent a last-minute message that he would arrive with a kingpin U.S. authorities had been chasing for four decades.

"El Mayo was the cherry on top," said one US official, who declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the arrests. "It wasn't expected at all."

Guzman Lopez had convinced Zambada to board the plane by telling him that they were flying to see real estate in northern Mexico, according to the two current and one former US officials.

Reuters was the first news organization to report the arrests, ahead of a Department of Justice statement on Thursday evening that confirmed the two men had been detained in El Paso. The news agency spoke to current and former officials to piece together a detailed account of the operation.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the two agencies who carried out the operation, scrambled agents from their local El Paso offices and barely reached the airport by the time the private plane was landing, according to a fifth source, a U5S official who declined to give further details on the arrests.

One worker at the Dona Ana County International Jetport, near El Paso, told Reuters he saw a Beechcraft King Air plane land on Thursday afternoon on the runway, where federal agents were already waiting.

"Two individuals got off the plane ... and were calmly taken into custody," said the man, who declined to share his name out of concern for his safety.

The unexpected arrest of El Mayo, in his late 70s, and the way he appears to have been betrayed by Guzman Lopez, who is about 38 years old, has jolted the Mexican drug trafficking world, triggering fears of a bloody fissure in the Sinaloa Cartel between the two families that control the group's biggest power bases.

Zambada is accused of being one of the most consequential traffickers in Mexico's history, having co-founded the Sinaloa Cartel with "El Chapo" Guzman, who was extradited to the US in 2017 and is serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Colorado.

Reuters could not determine why Guzman Lopez betrayed his father's long-time partner, though the four current and former sources said it was likely due to his desire to obtain a more favourable plea bargain deal from US authorities and help his brother, Ovidio, who was arrested and extradited to the United States in 2023.

US authorities have made drug bosses key targets, frequently striking plea bargain deals with them in exchange for information that leads to the capture of other high-ranking cartel figures.

The back-channel communication between American officials and Guzman Lopez was carried out through lawyers, the first official said. Jeffrey Lichtman, who represents both Guzman brothers, declined to comment.

Zambada, who was in a wheelchair, pleaded not guilty on Friday in a Texas courtroom to drug charges, including continuing criminal enterprise, narcotics importation conspiracy and money laundering. His lawyer, Frank Perez, said Zambada did not come to the US voluntarily.

Guzman Lopez is due to appear in court next week in Chicago, where he was first indicted on drugs charges around 6 years ago.

Guzman Lopez is one of four sons of El Chapo - known as Los Chapitos, or Little Chapos - who inherited their father's faction of the cartel. Joaquin and Ovidio have the same mother, while the other two siblings – Ivan and Jesus Alfredo – hail from El Chapo's first marriage.

The brothers have in recent years come under ferocious pressure from US authorities, who have made them their main anti-narcotics targets, portraying them and the Sinaloa Cartel as the biggest traffickers of fentanyl into the United States. Fentanyl overdoses have surged to become the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 and 45.

Ray Donovan, a former high-ranking US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) official, said the defeats suffered by key Sinaloa Cartel bosses in recent past are mainly down to their embrace of fentanyl, which has risen up the political agenda in Washington as the death told has mounted on US streets.

"The number of Americans dying has put a lot more pressure," Donovan said. "Fentanyl brought them down."

On Friday, US President Joe Biden heralded the arrests and vowed to continue combating "the scourge of fentanyl".

El Chapo's sons are known to be more violent and hot-headed than Zambada, who had a reputation as a shrewd operator that liked to stay in the shadows. Guzman Lopez was also seen as less important than his other three brothers.

The US authorities had a $15 million reward for the capture of Zambada, who co-founded the Sinaloa Cartel in the late 1980s with El Chapo. Guzman Lopez had a $5 million bounty on his head. Both men face multiple indictments in the United States.

The first US official cautioned that there are still many questions unanswered about how or why Zambada, an ultra-cautious and experienced cartel chieftain, found himself on that plane.

Mexican Security Minister Rosa Rodriguez said that Mexico was informed of the detentions by the US government, but that Mexican authorities did not participate in the operation.

Outgoing Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has taken a cautious approach to tackling the powerful cartels, curbing security cooperation with US authorities on fears that the previous US-Mexico strategy of targeting powerful kingpins was triggering more nationwide violence.

In Oct. 2019, Mexico's military arrested Ovidio but were forced to release him after hundreds of Sinaloa Cartel foot soldiers blocked roads and fought running gun battles with soldiers as they to lay siege to the city of Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa. The military arrested Ovidio again in Jan. 2023 and he was extradited in September last year.

Matthew Allen, a former Special Agent in Charge of HSI's Arizona division that built indictments against Guzman Lopez and other Sinaloa Cartel figures, said both Zambada and Guzman Lopez had had periodic conversations with US officials about surrendering over the years.

Allen, who maintains regular contact with former colleagues at HSI, said many traffickers, especially those from the younger generation, realize that giving themselves up, serving some time in jail and then spending their wealth is a better option than risking death from rivals in Mexico or capture by authorities that can lead to lifelong prison terms. Some informants are allowed to enter witness protection programs.

"They're seeing that this way you can do your time and do not have to look over your shoulder for the rest of your life," he said.

Former United States President Donald Trump has responded after the FBI addressed speculation that he was not shot during his assassination bid at a rally in Pennsylvania, earlier this month. In a statement released on Friday, the FBI confirmed, "What struck former President Trump in the ear was a bullet, whether whole or fragmented into smaller pieces, fired from the deceased subject's rifle." Trump reacted to the statement on Truth Social, stating, "I assume that's the best apology that we'll get from Director (Christopher) Wray, but it is fully accepted!" The former president's remarks came after some law enforcement officials, including the FBI chief, had expressed doubts about whether Trump was hit by a bullet in the attack, which resulted in an ear injury. "I'm not supposed to be here, I'm supposed to be dead." GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene criticised Wray on X, asserting, "FBI Director [Christopher] Wray should have never played into Democrats' lies and conspiracy theories suggesting it was a piece of glass or fragment that struck President Trump." Greene also shared a statement by Republican Representative Ronny Jackson, who served as physician to the former president at the White House. Earlier on Friday, Jackson said Trump was hit by a bullet in his right ear. "There is absolutely no evidence that it was anything other than a bullet," he asserted. Following Wray's testimony to Congress, Trump had lashed out at the FBI director, saying that it was in fact a bullet that struck his ear. "FBI Director Christopher Wray told Congress yesterday that he wasn't sure if I was hit by shrapnel, glass, or a bullet. It was, unfortunately, a bullet that hit my ear, and hit it hard. There was no glass, there was no shrapnel. The hospital called it a 'bullet wound to the ear,' and that is what it was. No wonder the once storied FBI has lost the confidence of America!" the former president wrote on social media. In his testimony, Wray also shared new details about the attack by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
