US President-elect Donald Trump Sunday (Dec 22) indicated that he may allow embattled TikTok, the Chinese video-sharing social networking service, to continue operations in the US. While speaking to a crowd in Phoenix, Arizona; the incoming US president highlighted how his campaign got a massive boost on the platform ahead of the Nov 5 elections. Addressing his supporters, Trump said, “They brought me a chart, and it was a record, and it was so beautiful to see, and as I looked at it, I said, ‘Maybe we gotta keep this sucker around for a little while.’”

It’s among major signals by the Trump team that the incoming administration may oppose a potential ban on TikTok, which is facing increased pressure due to national security concerns. Earlier this year, the US Senate okayed legislation requiring ByteDance, the parent company, to divest the app. The China-owned company has appealed the law in the US Supreme Court.

However, the Justice Department continues to argue that Chinese ownership of the app continues to be a security threat to the US government as well as to people.

There are concerns that Beijing may force ByteDance to hand over TikTok users’ data or pressure the app to modify its algorithm, presenting content that could manipulate public opinion.

Panama's president Jose Raul Mulino on Sunday dismissed recent threats made by US President-elect Donald Trump to retake control of the Panama Canal over complaints of "unfair" treatment of American ships.

"Every square metre of the Panama Canal and its adjacent areas belongs to Panama and will continue belonging to Panama," Mulino said in a video posted to X.

Mulino's public comments, though never mentioning Trump by name, come a day after the president-elect complained about the canal on his Truth Social platform.

"Our Navy and Commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way. The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous," he said.

China said Sunday it "firmly opposed" US President Joe Biden's approval of $571.3 million in defence assistance for Taiwan.
The White House said Friday that Biden had authorised the drawdown "of up to $571.3 million in defence articles and services of the Department of Defense, and military education and training, to provide assistance to Taiwan".
The White House statement did not provide details of the military assistance package, which comes less than three months after one worth $567 million was authorised.

"This move gravely infringes on China's sovereignty and security interests," Beijing's foreign ministry said in a statement, adding it "firmly opposes this action".
China "has lodged stern representations with the US at the earliest opportunity", it said.
The country's Taiwan Affairs Office said such actions by the US "contradict its leaders' serious commitments" to not supporting "Taiwan independence".
"We demand that the US immediately cease arming Taiwan and handle the Taiwan issue with the utmost caution," said spokeswoman Zhu Fenglian, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

The United States does not officially recognise Taiwan diplomatically, but it is the self-ruled island's strategic ally and largest supplier of weapons.
China, which has ramped up political and military pressure on Taiwan in recent years, has repeatedly called for Washington to cease sending arms and assistance to the island, which it claims as part of its territory.
Taiwan received 38 advanced Abrams battle tanks from the United States this week—reportedly its first new tanks in 30 years.

The outgoing US administration Wednesday (Dec 19) slapped sanctions on four Pakistani entities, including one state-owned, in an action ‘targeting proliferators of weapons of mass destruction.’ Mathew Miller, the State Department spokesperson, said the four agencies were involved in Pakistan’s long-range ballistic missile programme.

Details of sanctioned entities

The entities that were targeted by Washington DC Wednesday included Islambad-based National Development Complex (NDC). The agency is believed to have played a central role in developing Pakistan’s ballistic missile capabilities.

NDC is also responsible for developing Shaheen-series ballistic missiles and also for procuring special vehicle chassis and missile testing equipment to support these efforts.

Apart from the NDC, US sanctions targeted Akhtar and Sons Private Limited, a company that allegedly supplied a range of equipment to NDC for its missile development activities. Rockside Enterprise, a third firm, was also targeted by the US to prevent “the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and prevent further destabilising developments in the region.”

Islamabad reacts

Reacting to the move by US, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said it was an “unfortunate and biased” action. The statement added that the US move could undermine regional stability by “exacerbating military asymmetries.”

Pakistan’s ballistic missile programme

Reuters cited the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists as saying that Pakistan’s Shaheen-series missiles can be used to launch nuclear weapons. The South Asian country first test-exploded a nuclear bomb in 1998 and entered the elite club of nuclear-armed nations. It currently holds at least 170 nuclear warheads.

It must be noted that the Shaheen programme was launched by Pakistan in response to India’s Agni series missiles. Shaheen-III missile, with a range of 2,750 kilometres, has the ability to reach farthest places in India’s northeast as well as Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean. New Jersey, US
As unidentified drones and flying objects continue to puzzle residents in New Jersey, New York, and other US Northeast cities, a drone-hunting technology currently being used on the battlefield in Ukraine might offer some relief. According to a report in ABC News, New York Senator Chuck Schumer and New York Governor Kathy Hochul have urged the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to harness the Robin Radar System to identify the source of these flying objects that have been giving sleepless nights to local communities for over a month.
"I want to see a flock of Robin-like technology systems deployed across the New York City metropolitan area, so we need the Department of Homeland Security to spring into action," Schumer said in a statement delivered Monday (Dec 16) in the Senate.

According to the director of Robin Radar USA Inc., the advanced drone detection system can be put to use to track “small moving objects, whether they be drones, rotary, fixed-wing, or if you just want to filter them out because you don't want to see birds or large crickets." Kris Brost was quoted as saying by ABC News that the system has evolved over the past years after originally being designed for preventing flocks of birds near airports from striking aircraft.

More about Robin-like technology According to the director of Robin Radar USA Inc., the advanced drone detection system can be put to use to track “small moving objects, whether they be drones, rotary, fixed-wing, or if you just want to filter them out because you don't want to see birds or large crickets." Kris Brost was quoted as saying by ABC News that the system has evolved over the past years after originally being designed for preventing flocks of birds near airports from striking aircraft. Also read: Unidentified aircraft over New Jersey, New York are Chinese `spy drones`, claims US congressman The system has the ability to differentiate manned-operated aircraft from drones by analysing their flying patterns in real time and beam data back to a laptop computer with a 360-degree, 3D view of the airspace. “Basically what a radar does is, a radar bounces radio waves off objects," Brost said, but also added that the Robin radar can also read a drone's radio frequency: "There’s a sophisticated term called ‘radar cross section’ and that really comes down to what is that material made of, how fast is it moving, what altitude it’s at, etc." This radar system is being used in the Russia-Ukraine war to help Kyiv forces locate incoming Russian weaponised drones. Trump slams Biden government over mystery drone sightings, says 'shoot them down'

Imagine a firearm with no serial number, no background check, and no way to trace its origin. Welcome to the world of ghost guns, a growing phenomenon that's prompting states to take action and raising questions about the balance between public safety and individual rights.

What are ghost guns?

Ghost guns are homemade firearms assembled from parts purchased online or created using 3D printers. They lack serial numbers, making them untraceable by law enforcement. This anonymity appeals to individuals seeking to bypass background checks and other legal restrictions.

The components used to assemble ghost guns are often sold online or at gun shows and do not meet the federal definition of a firearm until fully assembled. As a result, they can be sold without serial numbers or background checks. Advancements in 3D printing technology have further simplified the creation of these untraceable weapons. Due to their lack of serial numbers, it is impossible to know exactly how many exist, but thousands of ghost guns have been recovered from crime scenes in recent years.

The rise of ghost guns has prompted various U.S. state-level regulatory responses, each navigating the complexities of the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution (the right to bear arms).

US state-level regulatory responses

As of November 2024, 15 U.S. states have enacted regulations to address the proliferation of ghost guns. These measures vary but generally include requirements for serial numbers, background checks, and restrictions on undetectable or 3D-printed firearms.

1. California

Mandates serial numbers and background checks for firearm components. All ghost guns must be reported to authorities. The state also bans the production of undetectable plastic guns.

2. Colorado

Requires serial numbers for firearm components. The state focuses on ensuring that all firearm parts are serialized to aid in traceability.

3. Connecticut

Imposes serial numbers and background checks for components. All ghost guns must be reported to officials. Bans plastic undetectable guns.

4. Delaware

Requires serial numbers and background checks for components. Bans plastic undetectable guns and 3D-printed firearms. Prohibits the distribution of 3D printing instructions for guns.

5. Hawaii

Mandates serial numbers and background checks for components. All ghost guns must be reported. Bans 3D-printed firearms.

6. Illinois

Requires serial numbers and background checks for all firearms and components.

7. Maryland

Mandates serial numbers and background checks for all firearms and components. All ghost guns must be reported.

8. Massachusetts

Requires serial numbers and background checks for all firearms and components. All ghost guns must be reported.

9. Nevada

11. New York

Requires serial numbers and background checks for components. All ghost guns must be reported. Bans plastic undetectable guns.

12. Oregon

Prohibits undetectable firearms, including 3D-printed guns. Requires serialization of all firearms, frames, and receivers.

13. Rhode Island

Mandates serial numbers and background checks for components. Bans 3D-printed guns.

14. Vermont

Requires serial numbers and background checks for all firearms and components.

15. Washington

Mandates serial numbers and background checks for components. Bans plastic undetectable guns.

Balancing regulations with second amendment rights

The regulation of ghost guns intersects with Second Amendment rights, leading to legal challenges and debates. Proponents of strict regulations argue that untraceable firearms pose significant public safety risks and that measures like serialization and background checks are reasonable controls. Opponents contend that building firearms at home is a longstanding tradition protected by the Second Amendment and that such regulations infringe upon individual rights.

The US Supreme Court has engaged with cases related to ghost gun regulations, reflecting the ongoing national debate over balancing public safety with constitutional rights. The outcomes of these cases will significantly influence future legislative efforts and the legal landscape surrounding ghost guns.

Finally, ghost guns present complex challenges at the intersection of technology, law, and individual rights. State-level regulations aim to address public safety concerns by imposing measures like serialization and background checks. However, these efforts must carefully navigate the protections afforded by the Second Amendment. As legal battles continue and technology evolves, the discourse on ghost guns remains a critical aspect of the broader conversation on gun control and constitutional rights in the United States.

The rise of ghost guns in US: What you need to know

A US bankruptcy judge Tuesday (Dec 10) rejected an auction bid by satirical news outlet The Onion to acquire Infowars, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ website. The Onion had won the bid to purchase Infowars on November 14 after the platform was put up for sale owing to Jones’ $1.5 billion case in connection with the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.

Infowars faced legal troubles after Jones falsely called one of the deadliest school shootings in United States history a hoax. Jones had claimed that the incident, which saw the killing of 20 children and six educators, was in fact staged by actors so that the government could bring in tighter gun controls. The parents of the victims later claimed in courts that they were traumatised by the conspiracies disseminated by Infowars.

In 2022, Jones was asked by the court to pay $1.5bn in defamation lawsuits to the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. Shortly after, he filed for bankruptcy. Now, most of the proceeds from the sale of Infowars will go towards the victims of the 2012 shooting.

Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez on Tuesday said the bidding process was flawed and he also questioned the amount of money that would go to the victims. The Onion wanted to acquire Infowars and turn it into a parody platform.

The Onion’s CEO said he was deeply disappointed with the ruling, saying he will continue to seek a resolution. “We are deeply disappointed in today’s decision, but The Onion will continue to seek a resolution that helps the Sandy Hook families receive a positive outcome for the horror they endured,” said Ben Collins. The Onion had offered $1.75 million in cash to Infowars.

Meanwhile, a lawyer for the Sandy Hook families said they were also disappointed with the ruling.

“These families, who have already persevered through countless delays and roadblocks, remain resilient and determined as ever to hold Alex Jones and his corrupt businesses accountable for the harm he has caused,” the lawyer said in a statement.

Residents in the northeastern US state of New Jersey have been increasingly spotting bright and fast-flying objects in their skies over the past few days. According to the New York Times, the sightings began in November 2024, with some residents spotting car-sized drones forming some patterns up there. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is probing now.

The sightings have been reported near critical and sensitive sites such as reservoirs, power lines, and railroads; prompting concerns and the FBI investigation.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy on December 5 said in a social media post that an investigation has been launched but “there is no known threat to the public at this time.”

Several videos have emerged on the internet showing drone-like figures flying in the sky, with some eyewitnesses saying these objects are significantly larger than typical hobbyist models and emit a loud, humming noise.

"It's kind of unsettling. They're not up for 15 minutes, they're up for hours," a resident was quoted as saying by WPIX. "We saw one right up above us that was the size of our car, another resident said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is probing now. The sightings have been reported near critical and sensitive sites such as reservoirs, power lines, and railroads; prompting concerns and the FBI investigation. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy on December 5 said in a social media post that an investigation has been launched but “there is no known threat to the public at this time.” Several videos have emerged on the internet showing drone-like figures flying in the sky, with some eyewitnesses saying these objects are significantly larger than typical hobbyist models and emit a loud, humming noise. "It's kind of unsettling. They're not up for 15 minutes, they're up for hours," a resident was quoted as saying by WPIX. "We saw one right up above us that was the size of our car, another resident said. These "drones" being seen over New Jersey are Galactic Federation crafts. They're partially disguised to give those who aren't ready time to adapt. Some look like planes. Some look like drones. The military already knows they can't stop them. China has freed three Americans considered wrongfully detained in a swap with the United States, US officials said Wednesday, meeting a key goal of outgoing President Joe Biden's administration.

The three Americans – Mark Swidan, Kai Li and John Leung – were the last prisoners in China classified by the State Department as wrongfully detained, although activists and families have raised the cases of other US citizens.

"Soon they will return and be reunited with their families for the first time in many years," a State Department spokesperson said on the eve of Thanksgiving, the American holiday associated with family reunions.

"Thanks to this administration's efforts and diplomacy with the PRC, all of the wrongfully detained Americans in the PRC are home," the spokesperson said, referring to the People's Republic of China.

A source close to the matter said that the three were being freed in a swap with Beijing for three Chinese nationals in US custody who were not identified.

Swidan was detained in late 2012 on a business trip to China on drug charges. His family and supporters say there was never any evidence he had drugs and that his driver and translator had blamed him.

In his early time in detention, Swidan was deprived of sleep and food and lost more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms), according to Dui Hua, a group that supports prisoners in China.

Swidan's mother Katherine, who lives in Texas, addressed a congressional hearing in September and accused the Biden administration of ignoring his plight.

"Our loved ones are not bargaining chips or political pawns; they are human beings whose rights and freedoms must be upheld and protected," she said.

Kai Li, a naturalized American born in Shanghai who ran a business exporting aircraft technology, was detained in 2016 and convicted of espionage for allegedly sending state secrets to US authorities.

He says he was sharing information routinely available on the internet as part of routine compliance with US export regulations.

Leung, a US citizen in his late 70s with permanent residency in Hong Kong, was also convicted of espionage. China said little about his case when he was first detained in 2021 but later accused him of spying on Chinese officials on behalf of the United States.

Engagement with China

In September, the United States secured the release of another American considered wrongfully detained -- David Lin, a pastor who had been jailed since 2006.

US officials later acknowledged that the release was part of a swap for a Chinese national following quiet diplomacy.

The approach is in sharp contrast to prisoner exchanges with Russia, in which Biden and President Vladimir Putin have personally greeted returning citizens at the airport.

The US prisoners in China have drawn comparatively less attention, although US lawmakers have been repeatedly raised their cases and the Biden administration insisted they remained a priority.

With the latest three, the outgoing administration has secured the release of more than 70 unjustly detained Americans around the world, officials said.

Biden most recently raised the prisoners' case personally with President Xi Jinping during their final meeting this month on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Peru, officials said.

Observers say that China has sought to show that, if the United States engages, it is willing to work constructively on certain areas of concern.

The Biden administration also says that China has taken action against producers of the precursor chemicals to fentanyl, the synthetic painkiller behind an overdose pandemic in the United States that has begun to decline.

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed a more confrontational approach and said on social media this week that he would immediately impose big tariffs on products from China, as well as US neighbours Mexico and Canada.

Both the Biden and Trump teams have described China as the most significant long-term adversary of the United States, but Biden has also emphasized the value of engagement.

Former President Donald Trump's team is reportedly preparing a list of Pentagon officers to be dismissed, should he return to office. The move is seen as part of his broader strategy to reshape the military leadership, with a focus on removing officials he deems disloyal or ineffective. The plan has raised concerns about potential political interference in military affairs.

US Presidential Election 2024: Joe Biden invites Donald Trump to White House for smooth transfer of power

Robert Lighthizer has reportedly been asked to return as the United States Trade Representative following Republican candidate Donald Trump's 2024 presidential election win, according to a report from the Financial Times on Friday (Nov 8).

During Trump’s first term, Lighthizer served as the US trade representative and played a key role in the trade war with China and managing the country’s tariff strategies. He was instrumental in renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico.

During his campaign, Trump pledged to impose significant tariffs on all imported goods, especially those from China. His aim is to intensify his earlier trade approach with a plan for 10 per cent tariffs on most imports, along with even higher rates for products from China and other select countries. If these tariffs are put in place, they could increase costs for American consumers.

China's ambassador to the US, Xie Feng, cautioned on Thursday (Nov 7) that trade wars, tariffs, or disputes over technology and industry have no true winners. He stated that differences between the two nations should encourage dialogue and mutual growth, rather than be a source of confrontation. Xie added that each country’s success should be seen as an opportunity for the other.

Trump wants trade war veteran Robert Lighthizer to run US trade policy: Report

As Democrat-leaning women across the United States vow to ditch ‘love making’ and reproduction with men over Republican Donald Trump’s victory amid concerns about how his presidency would affect their reproductive rights, Conservative women are starting a separate movement of their own: Having more and more babies and ‘spreading the red’. Several female supporters of the Republican party are taking to social media and expressing their desire to have more babies as they believe Trump would fix the country’s cost of living crisis.

Trump to give $7bn jolt to Canada? Republican win leaves Trudeau ex-ally worried

Hezbollah's leader on Wednesday (Nov. 6) announced that the outcome of the US presidential election would not affect any potential ceasefire agreement to end the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

"We don't base our expectations for a halt of the aggression on political developments... Whether (Kamala) Harris wins or (Donald) Trump wins, it means nothing to us," he said in a recorded address given before Trump declared his victory.

"We have tens of thousands of trained resistance combatants prepared to engage in combat," Naim Qassem said during a speech commemorating 40 days since his predecessor's death.

Qassem further cautioned that no location in Israel would be considered "off-limits" for Hezbollah's attacks.

"What will stop this... war is the battlefield," he added, referencing ongoing clashes in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah's strikes on Israel.

This was Qassem's second address since being appointed Hezbollah’s secretary-general last week. He took over from the former leader, Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in a major Israeli airstrike on Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut.

In a separate development, airstrikes hit areas in south Beirut on Wednesday, roughly an hour after Israel issued evacuation warnings for three regions in Hezbollah's main stronghold. One of the strikes caused a loud explosion that was heard across much of the capital, according to witnesses cited by AFP.

Israel's military spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, warned residents to leave the southern suburbs of Burj al-Barajneh, Laylaki, and Haret Hreik in a post on X.

"You are located near facilities and interests affiliated with Hezbollah, against which the (military) will act in the near future," Adraee stated as Naim Qassem’s speech was being broadcast.

Earlier on Wednesday, Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported Israeli airstrikes on the eastern Bekaa Valley and the southern city of Nabatiyeh.

'It means nothing to us': Hezbollah chief says ceasefire with Israel won’t depend on US election result

Elon Musk was sued in a proposed class action on Tuesday by registered voters who signed his petition to support the Constitution for a chance to win his $1 million-a-day giveaway, and now claim it was a fraud.

The complaint filed by Arizona resident Jacqueline McAferty in the Austin, Texas federal court said Musk and his America PAC organization falsely induced voters to sign by claiming they would choose winners randomly, though they were predetermined.

She also said the defendants profited from the giveaway by driving traffic and attention to Musk's X social media platform, and by collecting personal information such as her name, address and phone number that they could sell.

A lawyer for Musk and lawyers for McAferty did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the complaint.

McAferty sued one day after a Philadelphia judge denied a request by that city's district attorney Larry Krasner to end the giveaway, which Krasner called an illegal lottery.

That ruling was largely symbolic because Musk has no plans to give out more money following the U.S. presidential election.

The world's richest person opened the giveaway to voters in seven battleground states who signed a petition to support free speech and gun rights. Tuesday's lawsuit seeks at least $5 million in damages for everyone who signed.

Musk is a Texas resident and his electric car company Tesla is based in Austin.
