A Texas Republican leader has sparked a controversy over his remarks on a 90-foot statue of lord Hanuman, known as the 'Statue of Union', in the US city. Alexander Duncan, a Republican from Texas, criticised that America is a Christian nation and should not permit 'a false statue of a false Hindu God.' "Why are we allowing a false statue of a false Hindu God to be here in Texas? We are a CHRISTIAN nation," Alexander Duncan wrote on X. The post was written while posting the video of the statue located at Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple in the town of Sugar Land, Texas.

Netizens hit out at the post
Soon after Duncan's post came on X, several social media users lashed out at him along with the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), calling the statement "anti-Hindu and inflammatory." Reacting to it, the Hindu group formally reported the incident to the Republican Party in Texas and urged it to address the matter. "Hello @TexasGOP, will you be disciplining your senate candidate from your party who openly contravenes your own guidelines against discrimination-displaying some pretty sordid anti-Hindu hate-not to mention disrespect for the 1st Amendment's Establishment Clause?" the Hindu American Foundation posted.

In response to his remarks, several netizens criticised on social media. An X user wrote, " Hindus aren't promoting j*had. Focus on the actual problem of violent foreign nationals who h8 us. Hindu gods depict facets of the ultimate god consciousness. They are all connected and promote the development of virtue. Read up a bit. This is not the problem." Another X user said, "Just because you’re not Hindu, doesn’t make it false. And there’s obvious influences on Christianity…so it would be wise to honor and research the ‘religion’ that predates and influences yours." "India has always been a Hindu civilisation. Yet today it houses over 500,000 mosques & nearly 100,000 churches/ chapels, with the Catholic Church standing as the second-largest landowner after the Indian government (not some Indic faith). Despite deep theological differences, no Indian politician would dare call these churches an “abomination” or dismiss them as shrines to “fake gods.” Yet you bigots spit such venom freely and walk away unscathed. Perhaps you do deserve the fate hurtling your way where you will be swallowed by the toxic cocktail of Wokeism and Pan-Islamism," another user said.

The US Federal Reserve decided to reduce interest rates for the first time in 2025 on Wednesday (September 17), responding to signs of a cooling job market and potential risks to employment. The rate cut, set at 25 basis points, brings the benchmark lending rate to a range between 4.0% and 4.25%, with the central bank signaling two additional cuts before the end of the year. The vote was split, with the only dissent coming from newly appointed Fed Governor Stephen Miran. Miran, who previously served as an economic adviser to President Donald Trump, pushed for a larger reduction of 50 basis points. The other members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted in favor of the smaller cut. This meeting marked Miran’s first decision as a voting member, following his swift Senate confirmation earlier in the week. His appointment was notable, as he was named to replace another official who retired early, with many observers highlighting the political implications of his role. The Fed's decision reflects the difficult balancing act policymakers face: supporting the labor market while managing inflation risks. Although inflation remains above the central bank's 2% target, the economic indicators point to a deceleration in job growth, prompting the Fed to prioritize employment concerns. In its statement, the Fed acknowledged that risks to the labor market had increased, noting a slowdown in job creation and a slight uptick in the unemployment rate, though it still remains low. Despite inflationary pressures, the central bank emphasized the importance of boosting the economy and providing more support for the workforce. Additionally, the Fed raised its 2025 economic growth projection from 1.4% to 1.6%, but made no revisions to its inflation or unemployment forecasts. The move comes amid continuing political pressure, particularly from President Trump, who has consistently urged the Fed to cut rates further to stimulate the economy. The political influence on the Fed has drawn criticism, especially with Miran’s proximity to the Trump administration. Miran’s appointment, along with the ongoing legal dispute surrounding the ousting of Fed Governor Lisa Cook, has raised concerns among some economists about the Fed’s independence. EY’s chief economist, Gregory Daco, warned that the growing political attention on the Fed could have negative consequences. Historical precedents suggest that central banks under political influence can lead to suboptimal economic outcomes, including higher inflation, slower growth, and greater market volatility. Looking ahead, the Fed’s upcoming decisions will likely be closely scrutinized, as will Miran’s future votes and statements. The central bank faces an increasingly complex economic environment, with the full effects of Trump’s tariffs still unfolding.

The US Federal Reserve has announced it will shut down its dedicated program for overseeing banks’ involvement in cryptocurrencies and financial technology, folding the work into its broader supervisory framework. The decision marks a significant shift in how America’s top banking regulator approaches emerging technologies. According to Reuters, the Fed confirmed on Friday that it will end its “novel activities supervision program,” which was set up in 2023 to specifically monitor how banks engage with crypto firms, blockchain projects and other fintech ventures. At the time, regulators were concerned about gaps in oversight as digital assets and new financial platforms moved deeper into the mainstream banking system.
From experiment to integration
The Fed said the program has now served its purpose. Over the past two years, central bank examiners have gained experience in assessing risks tied to digital assets, distributed ledger technologies, and bank partnerships with fintechs. That knowledge will now be absorbed into routine bank supervision, rather than sitting in a standalone unit. “The Federal Reserve has strengthened its understanding of these risks and how banks manage them,” the central bank said in its announcement, as quoted by Reuters. The move reflects growing confidence that crypto and fintech exposures can be handled within the Fed’s existing supervisory framework, rather than requiring a siloed structure.
Regulatory backdrop
The novel activities program was launched at a time of turmoil in crypto markets. The collapse of major firms in 2022 and 2023, including FTX, triggered a wave of scrutiny in Washington and prompted regulators to tighten their guard. Banks were warned repeatedly that their crypto dealings would be subject to higher review. In parallel, other regulators such as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) also began highlighting the risks of digital assets to traditional finance. By scrapping the dedicated program, the Fed is signalling that crypto and fintech oversight is maturing into the normal course of supervision, rather than remaining an outlier.
Industry and policy implications
For banks, the decision could streamline compliance, since crypto activities will now be examined alongside their other business lines. For policymakers, it highlights a shift from experimental oversight to mainstream integration, suggesting that digital finance is no longer treated as a novelty, but as part of the broader banking landscape. Still, the move comes at a delicate moment. President Donald Trump’s administration has leaned toward a lighter regulatory stance on crypto, while Democrats in Congress continue to call for stricter guardrails. Analysts told Reuters that how the Fed embeds its crypto expertise into traditional oversight will be closely watched by markets and lawmakers alike. With the program gone, the Fed’s next challenge will be balancing innovation with financial stability, ensuring banks can explore fintech partnerships and blockchain solutions without exposing the wider system to untested risks. (With inputs from the agencies)

US manufacturing production stalled in July, underscoring the strain tariffs and higher costs are placing on American factories. Data released by the Federal Reserve on August 15 showed factory output was unchanged from June, when it had risen by an upwardly revised 0.3 per cent. Economists had expected a slight decline of 0.1 per cent. Overall industrial production—which includes manufacturing, mining and utilities—slipped 0.1 per cent in July after a 0.4 per cent gain in June. On a year-over-year (y-o-y) basis, industrial output rose 1.4 per cent.
Manufacturing holds flat, vehicles lag
Manufacturing, which makes up about 10 per cent of the US economy, saw a mixed performance across sectors. Motor vehicle and parts production fell 0.3 per cent in July following a 2.5 per cent decline in June, reflecting both seasonal shutdowns for retooling and the added pressure of tariffs. Excluding autos, factory output edged down 0.1 per cent. While durable goods manufacturing rose 0.3 per cent on gains in aerospace, electrical equipment, appliances and furniture, nondurable output decreased 0.4 per cent, with declines across textiles, apparel and petroleum products. Primary metals and machinery production also contracted. Mining output dropped 0.4 per cent, while utilities slipped 0.2 per cent after a sharp 1.8 per cent surge the previous month.
Tariffs add to headwinds
Economists point to tariffs on imported inputs, including steel, aluminium and motor vehicle parts, as a key drag on production. US President Donald Trump has imposed duties of up to 50 per cent on industrial metals and 25 per cent on autos, moves he argues will restore American industrial strength. But analysts warn the measures are squeezing businesses instead. Goldman Sachs estimates that so far companies have absorbed most of the tariff-related costs, passing on only about 22 per cent to consumers. However, the bank expects firms to shift more of the burden to households in the coming months.
Capacity use declines
The Fed’s report also showed capacity utilisation, a measure of how fully firms are using available resources, eased to 77.5 per cent in July from 77.7 per cent the prior month. Manufacturing utilisation edged down to 76.8 per cent, both below long-run averages.Despite weak factory output, US retail sales rose solidly in July, suggesting resilient consumer demand could offer some support in the months ahead. Still, with manufacturing job losses accumulating since April and key industry surveys signalling contraction, economists caution the outlook for the industrial sector remains fragile. (With inputs from agencies)

Will the US give Ukraine security guarantees? Donald Trump's 'NATO' reply

The Trump administration expects to shed roughly 300,000 federal civilian jobs this year, a move that would shrink the workforce by 12.5 per cent since January, according to newly appointed Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Scott Kupor. Speaking in Washington on August 14, Kupor said the majority of the cuts, about 80 per cent, would come from voluntary departures, while the remaining 20 per cent would be terminations. If realised, the reduction would nearly double the 154,000 employees who accepted buyouts last month, as first reported by Reuters. Kupor’s projection also represents more than a twofold increase over the 5.9 per cent attrition rate recorded in fiscal year 2023, the latest figure compiled by the non-profit Partnership for Public Service.
Push for ‘government efficiency’
US President Donald Trump, who began his second term in January, has made reducing the size of the federal workforce a central priority, arguing that the 2.4 million-member civilian staff is “bloated and inefficient”. Kupor stressed that he cannot compel agency heads to lay off workers but will seek to persuade cabinet secretaries to adopt his vision of streamlining government operations. “I cannot force people to lay people off,” Kupor said, emphasising the need for buy-in from agency leadership to achieve the administration’s efficiency goals. His remarks stand in contrast to the early months of Trump’s second term, when OPM leadership reportedly instructed agencies to dismiss employees who were new to their roles, according to a recent court filing.
More cuts under consideration
While Kupor declined to release agency-by-agency headcount targets, he confirmed that OPM will publish the figures later. In the meantime, federal agencies are preparing proposals for further workforce reductions, which will be submitted to White House Budget Director Russ Vought. These plans will be factored into the president’s upcoming budget request to Congress. Kupor met with budget officials on Wednesday to discuss the process. The scale of the anticipated cuts could have wide-reaching effects on public services and operations, though the administration maintains they are necessary for long-term fiscal sustainability. Trump’s downsizing push has drawn criticism from some employee unions and policy advocates, who warn that the reductions could weaken federal capacity in areas ranging from regulatory oversight to public health. Still, Kupor framed the changes as a strategic reset rather than an indiscriminate slashing of jobs. “We want to build a government that works smarter, not bigger,” he said. (With inputs from agencies)

Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said on Wednesday that Western governments falsely portray sanctions as a ‘bloodless alternative to war’. He accused the US of committing crimes against humanity. Citing a Lancet study, he said the US sanctions have unilaterally killed 500,000 people every year since 1970. He called the Western sanctions 'inhumane' and called for a collective effort between the sanctioned nations for a unified response.“Western regimes have long claimed that sanctions are a bloodless alternative to war. Reality check: New study by @TheLancet says unilateral sanctions, particularly by the US, may be as lethal as war. 500+k lives claimed annually since 1970s, mostly children and the elderly,” said Seyed Abbas Araghchi.

The Lancet study, funded by the Centre for Economic and Policy Research, conducted cross-national panel data analysis between age-specific mortality rates and 152 countries sanctioned between 1971 and 2021, applying a wide range of methods such as observational data, entropy balancing, Granger causality, event-study representations, and instrumental variables to form a causal relationship. The findings suggest that sanctions have similar impacts to war. It also suggests rethinking the foreign policy tools, highlighting the importance of exercising restraint in their use and seriously considering efforts to reform their design.Use of Economic sanctions has grown substantially, according to the Global Sanctions Database 25 per cent of all countries are subjected to sanctions either by the US or the EU or the UN between 2010-22, as compared to 8 per cent of 1970. As of August 2025, the US or the EU or the UN have sanctions over Brazil, Cuba, Iran, Venezuela, Russia and its oil buyers such as India and China, as well as Syria and Libya to some extent are under either sanctions or a heavy tariff burden. There are other kinds like the FATF blacklist, Shadow Fleet, Terrorism, and Human rights related sanctions, which encompass a complex web of global sanctions.

The US government’s budget deficit climbed by nearly 20 per cent in July to $291 billion, driven by rising government outlays that outpaced an increase in revenue, despite a surge in tariff collections from US President Donald Trump’s import taxes. According to Treasury Department data released on August 12, the deficit for July was up 19 per cent, or $47 billion, from the same month last year. Receipts totalled $338 billion, marking a modest 2 per cent growth, or an additional $8 billion. However, government outlays rose by a far larger 10 per cent, totalling $630 billion, a record high for July.
Trump’s tariff revenues soar, but not enough to offset spending
A key factor in the government's revenue boost was a dramatic rise in customs duty collections. July’s tariff revenue jumped 273 per cent, or $21 billion, compared to the same period last year, reaching approximately $27.7 billion. The increase is attributed to higher tariffs imposed on imports by President Trump, particularly following his trade policies with China and other countries.Despite the surge in tariff income, US spending continues to grow faster than revenues. Much of the increase in outlays is linked to a rise in interest payments on public debt, as well as higher government healthcare costs and inflation-driven Social Security payments. Over the first 10 months of the fiscal year, the deficit has reached $1.629 trillion, a 7 per cent increase from the previous year. While tariff revenues have helped to offset some of the rising costs, economists note that the overall impact on reducing the deficit remains uncertain.
Trade negotiations and future tariff revenue
The growing tariff income is being closely watched as part of the Trump administration’s broader plan to reduce the deficit. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stated that the administration remains focused on bringing down the deficit, even as the US gross national debt approaches $37 trillion. In related news, US President Trump extended his trade truce with China for another 90 days, maintaining the 30 per cent tariffs on Chinese imports as a bargaining chip. While negotiations continue, experts speculate that the US could see more tariff revenue as companies deplete their inventories and begin importing more goods, triggering additional duties. However, many are sceptical about the long-term effectiveness of the tariff strategy, with concerns that higher costs for consumers and reduced trade growth could ultimately offset any gains in federal revenue.

US President Donald Trump has said he is ordering a “new and highly accurate CENSUS” that would exclude undocumented immigrants. In a post on Truth Social, he wrote, “People who are in our country illegally will NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS.” He added that the new count would be based on “information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024.” This proposal marks a major departure from the traditional census, which is constitutionally required to count everyone living in the United States, citizen or not, every 10 years. Also read: '$50,000 bonuses, loan forgiveness': US drops age cap for ICE hires in biggest recruitment drive in history - Teens to join Trump's deportation push?
Why is the census important?
Census data is used to determine how many seats each state receives in the House of Representatives, a process known as apportionment. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has claimed the 2020 count was flawed and urged Trump to push for a new one. Trump has also called for Republican states to redraw their district maps to ensure control of the House, saying his party is “entitled” to the seats. Democrats, meanwhile, have vowed to fight back.
What’s happening at the Census Bureau?
The former Census Bureau Director, Robert Santos stepped down earlier this year. Under federal law, the questions must be sent to Congress two years in advance, well before the end of Trump’s possible second term in 2029.

Drones to deliver your coffee? Trump administration pushes for wider use of UAVs in business

The deadly midair collision between a US Army helicopter and a commercial passenger jet that killed 67 people in January may have been caused by faulty altitude readings aboard the military aircraft. This was revealed at an investigative hearing into the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the US agency tasked with looking into the fatal aircraft crash, held hearings this week, from Wednesday to Friday. It revealed that the Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopter involved in the crash may have been flying lower than its instruments showed at the time of impact—potentially contributing to the tragedy.
‘Concerning’ faulty altimeter readings the cause?
The crash occurred on January 29 just outside Washington, DC, as a Bombardier CRJ700 passenger jet was making its final approach to Reagan National Airport. The jet, operated by a regional subsidiary of American Airlines, had departed from Wichita, Kansas. The Black Hawk, meanwhile, was on a training flight. All 67 people aboard both aircraft were killed. There were no survivors. The NTSB's investigative hearing, held over three days this week, brought together experts, air traffic controllers, and federal regulators for intense questioning. One shocking detail that emerged from the hearings: a mismatch between two of the helicopter's key instruments—the radar altimeter and the barometric altimeter.Under the investigation, tests were conducted on three similar Black Hawk Lima models from the same Army battalion. The findings revealed this week showed a significant difference between the altitude indicated by the radar altimeter and the barometric altimeter on the aircraft.Marie Moler, a lead investigator, explained that tests "showed an 80- to 130-foot (24- to 40-meter) difference in flight". In test environments without full rotor lift, the margin narrowed to 20 to 55 feet."Once the helicopter rotors were turning and producing lift and thrust, the altimeter readings lowered significantly and stayed lower throughout the flights," Moler said.NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said the finding is troubling. "A 100-foot difference is significant,” she noted, especially in the airspace where the crash occurred—just over the Potomac River, where helicopters are required to fly below 200 feet (60.96 metres)."I am concerned. There is a possibility that what the crew saw was very different than what the true altitude was," Homendy added. The NTSB first flagged the issue in a preliminary report back in February, but the latest findings suggest the altimeter discrepancy wasn't a one-off error. It could be systemic.Despite no current evidence linking staffing decisions to the crash, President Donald Trump had sought to blame diversity hiring policies in aviation for the tragic midair collision.

An NTSB investigation revealed that the Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopter involved in the crash may have been flying lower than its instruments showed at the time of impact—potentially contributing to the tragedy.

One shocking detail that emerged from the hearings: a mismatch between two of the helicopter's key instruments—the radar altimeter and the barometric altimeter. Under the investigation, tests were conducted on three similar Black Hawk Lima models from the same Army battalion. The findings revealed this week showed a significant difference between the altitude indicated by the radar altimeter and the barometric altimeter on the aircraft. Marie Moler, a lead investigator, explained that tests "showed an 80- to 130-foot (24- to 40-meter) difference in flight". In test environments without full rotor lift, the margin narrowed to 20 to 55 feet. "Once the helicopter rotors were turning and producing lift and thrust, the altimeter readings lowered significantly and stayed lower throughout the flights," Moler said. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said the finding is troubling. US inflation accelerated in June as import tariffs drove up the cost of consumer goods such as furniture, appliances, and recreational products, reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve will delay interest rate cuts until at least October. The Commerce Department reported on July 31 that the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation measure, rose 0.3 per cent in June after an upwardly revised 0.2 per cent gain in May. On a year-on-year basis, inflation hit 2.6 per cent, up from 2.4 per cent in May and above the central bank’s 2 per cent target.Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also rose 0.3 per cent on the month and remained at 2.8 per cent annually. Economists noted this sustained upward pressure is being driven by higher goods prices, especially in tariff-sensitive sectors. Furniture prices climbed 1.3 per cent, appliances jumped 1.9 per cent, and computers rose 1.4 per cent, some of the largest monthly increases in years.
Fed holds steady amid persistent inflation
The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged this week at 4.25-4.50 per cent, citing ongoing inflation risks. Fed Chair Jerome Powell emphasised the need for more data to determine whether recent inflationary trends are temporary or indicative of sustained pressure due to import duties imposed during President Donald Trump’s administration. While Powell refrained from offering a clear timeline for policy easing, financial markets, which had previously priced in a potential September cut, have now pushed back expectations.Inflation-adjusted wages and incomes have also begun to feel the strain. Real disposable income was flat in June, despite a 0.3 per cent nominal income gain. The saving rate held at 4.5 per cent, indicating growing consumer caution.
Consumer spending holds, but outlook weakens
Despite rising prices, consumer spending edged up 0.3 per cent in June after being flat in May. Adjusted for inflation, spending rose a modest 0.1 per cent. Overall, the economy grew at a 3.0 per cent annual rate in the second quarter, boosted largely by a sharp drop in imports. However, underlying consumer demand remains tepid. Second-quarter spending grew at just a 1.4 per cent annualised pace, up from 0.5 per cent in Q1, suggesting households are becoming more cautious in the face of rising costs and a cooling labour market.Initial jobless claims ticked up slightly last week, and economists expect the July employment report to show a higher unemployment rate of 4.2 per cent, up from 4.1 per cent in June. With core inflation remaining stubbornly above target and price pressures broadening, the Fed appears likely to keep rates higher for longer, weighing on economic momentum into the fall.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also rose 0.3 per cent on the month and remained at 2.8 per cent annually. Economists noted this sustained upward pressure is being driven by higher goods prices, especially in tariff-sensitive sectors.

US President Donald had earlier in the month given a 50-day ultimatum to Russia to end hostilities with Ukraine. But Trump was growing impatient at Russia's reluctance to negotiate a peace. On Monday, he reduced the time frame from 50 days to a 10-12-day period. "I've spoken to President Putin a lot, I've gotten along with him very well," he said, adding that Putin “goes out and starts launching rockets into some city, like Kyiv, and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever, you have bodies lying all over the street.”The US had threatened to impose a 100 per cent tariff on Russia and its trading partners unless an agreement on resolving the Ukraine conflict was achieved within 50 days. The US had also continued to send weapons to Kyiv as long as the EU vows to pay for it.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has hit out at US President Donald Trump, saying Russia is neither Israel nor Iran, and it is not afraid of any ultimatum from anyone.

US retail sales rose 0.6 per cent in June, defying expectations and signalling a modest rebound in consumer spending. The Commerce Department’s report on July 17 highlighted that retail sales, which had been in decline for two consecutive months, reversed course and exceeded forecasts. Economists had predicted only a 0.1 per cent increase for the month. This growth marks a significant improvement after a 0.9 per cent drop in May and a 0.1 per cent dip in April. Year-on-year, June retail sales surged 3.9 per cent, surpassing the 3.6 per cent anticipated by economists, suggesting a continued but cautious consumer appetite. The positive figures provide a glimmer of optimism for an economy that has been caught in the throes of tariff-induced price hikes and trade uncertainty. The strong June report, especially in the face of the ongoing trade war and its inflationary effects, suggests that consumer spending, a key pillar of the US economy, remains resilient.
Auto sales and necessities drive growth
A major contributor to the uptick in retail sales was a 1.2 per cent jump in auto and auto parts sales, a rebound from the previous month’s 3.8 per cent drop. Consumers rushed to make purchases ahead of anticipated tariff-driven price hikes on imported vehicles. However, the growth in auto sales was likely driven by higher prices rather than an increase in volume.Other areas of spending showed mixed results. Sales in clothing and accessories increased by 0.9 per cent, while health and personal care items rose 0.5 per cent. Online retailers also saw a moderate uptick of 0.4 per cent. Yet, spending in electronics, appliances, and furniture stores dipped, reflecting the strain of higher costs tied to the ongoing tariffs. In particular, items heavily reliant on imports, such as electronics, showed signs of weakening demand, as price hikes outpaced consumer demand. Despite these hurdles, there are signs that Americans are prioritising essentials, with sales of household goods, groceries, and personal care products continuing to perform well.
Mixed economic signals raise questions
While the retail sales data is encouraging, it comes amid growing concerns about inflation. The US inflation rate rose 2.7 per cent in June, its highest level since February, as tariffs have driven up the costs of everyday goods. President Donald Trump has called on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, but the recent inflation data makes it less likely that the Fed will take such a step in the immediate future.Economists are also keeping a close eye on the job market, which continues to show resilience. Initial claims for unemployment benefits fell to a three-month low in the week ending July 12, reflecting steady job growth. However, fears about trade policy uncertainty and the risk of rising prices could still lead to a pullback in consumer spending later in the year.As the retail landscape braces for the upcoming back-to-school shopping season, which is expected to see a 3.3 per cent increase in spending, the full impact of tariffs and economic uncertainty will likely continue to shape US consumer behaviour in the months ahead. Retailers will have to navigate these shifting dynamics, balancing supply chain challenges and changing demand as they head into the busy autumn shopping period.

US retail sales rebound in June, buoyed by consumer spending resilience

US purchase prices remained unchanged in June, offering a surprise respite for consumers and businesses alike, despite ongoing concerns over the inflationary impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs. The Producer Price Index (PPI), which tracks the prices producers receive for their goods, showed no change from May, while the annual PPI climbed by 2.3 per cent. This marks a slight slowdown from May’s 2.7 per cent increase and suggests that the immediate impact of tariff hikes may not be as pronounced as initially feared.Despite the flat reading on wholesale prices, the ripple effects of tariffs continue to show up in consumer costs. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June rose 2.7 per cent from a year ago, driven by higher prices for goods such as groceries, household appliances, and vehicles—sectors most directly affected by the trade policies. The discrepancy between the flat PPI and the rising CPI highlights the complex nature of tariffs, with price pressures often taking different forms before reaching consumers.Economists view the PPI as a bellwether for future consumer inflation. The report showed that the stagnation in wholesale prices was largely attributed to a decline in service costs. Notably, wholesale prices for hotel rooms dropped 4.1 per cent, and airline fares fell 2.7 per cent. These drops were offset, however, by rising costs in goods, including a 1.0 per cent surge in household furniture prices and a 0.8 per cent increase in communication equipment, both of which reflect the ongoing tariff-induced price pressures. While the flat PPI offers some relief, it also complicates the Federal Reserve’s next move. The central bank has been under pressure to reduce interest rates to stimulate economic growth, but with tariffs continuing to push up prices in certain sectors, the Fed remains cautious. The latest data on factory production, showing only a slight 0.1 per cent increase in June, suggests that uncertainty in the manufacturing sector is holding back broader economic expansion, particularly as companies remain wary of the trade climate.Looking ahead, economists are forecasting that the PPI may remain relatively stable in the near term, though the potential for higher tariffs starting August 1 could further escalate costs. These concerns are compounded by President Trump’s continued calls for the Fed to cut interest rates, despite the risks that tariff-induced inflation poses to the broader economy. The core measure of producer prices, excluding volatile food and energy costs, also showed no change in June, rising 2.6 per cent year-on-year. This reflects that while tariffs are driving up prices in certain sectors, the broader economy has yet to experience widespread inflationary pressure. Still, with the possibility of additional tariffs looming, the Fed’s decision at its July 29-30 meeting will be closely watched for signs of whether the central bank will take action to counter these emerging price pressures. As tariffs remain a key focus, the outlook for both inflation and economic growth will likely depend on how businesses and consumers adjust to the shifting price landscape in the months ahead.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 jolted the coast of the US state of Alaska on Wednesday. It took place at approximately 12:37 local time (2037 GMT), and the epicenter was found to be 54 miles (87 kilometers) south of the island town of Sand Point. The epicenter of the quake was at a relatively shallow depth of 12.5 miles, the US Geological Survey said.A terrifying video from installed CCTV in the house of a resident in Sand Point, approximately 50 miles from the epicenter, has surfaced on social media, showing the house and parked car shaking violently.

Following the earthquake, officials initially issued a tsunami warning for South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula but later revoked the tsunami advisory and then completely withdrew it. "The Tsunami Advisory is cancelled for the coastal areas of South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula," the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) said in a message issued about two hours after the earthquake, AFP reported. The US Geological Survey confirmed that the initial quake was followed by a cluster of over a dozen aftershocks, the largest measuring 5.2 in magnitude. Meanwhile, the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) clarified that the tsunami warning and advisory were issued only for areas along the Alaskan coast, with areas further afield unaffected.NTWC added that a tsunami with a maximum height of 0.2 feet (6.1 centimeters) was witnessed at Sand Point. In response, the center directed residents in the affected zone to remain conscious of hazards. "Do not re-occupy hazard zones until local emergency officials indicate it is safe to do so," the NTWC said. The US state of Alaska is located along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire. In March 1964, the remote US state was hit by a 9.2-magnitude earthquake, the strongest ever recorded in North America, which devastated the city of Anchorage and slammed the Gulf of Alaska, the US west coast, and Hawaii, killing scores and damaging infrastructure.

Airport, rail, and roads services disrupted
Staten Island, a county in the New York has reached nearly 1.7 inches after heavy rain and Manhattan’s Chelsea neighbourhood by 7:30 pm reached 1.5 inches. Following this, the NWS warned that rain could up to the rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour, which can go upto 6 inches in total. As a result, several mode of transportation were disrupted, like LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports reported delays and disruptions, while John F. Kennedy Airport warned of potential issues. Similarly, substantial flooding disrupted a section of major roads in the state. In addition, flooding also hit subway stations in New York's Queens county, and train lines were severely disrupted, as well as the Staten Island Railway suspended service in both directions in the southern part of the borough.According to a report in New York Times, the cause of heavy rainfall in the part of the state was a slow-moving storm system combined with unusually humid and hot air. Joseph Wegman from the weather department underscored that “one storm will follow another, after another,” and most of the areas are unable to absorb sudden inflow of much water in a short period.

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week, hitting a seven-week low and suggesting that employers are still reluctant to let go of workers even as broader signs point to a cooling labour market. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped by 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 227,000 for the week ending July 5, the Labor Department reported on July 10. The figure surprised economists, who had forecast 235,000 claims, and marked the fourth consecutive weekly decline. The data was impacted by the July 4th holiday, which tends to cause fluctuations in reporting.Non-seasonally adjusted claims rose by over 10,000, largely due to expected auto industry retooling shutdowns in states like Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee. However, the increase was smaller than anticipated, suggesting that temporary layoffs were less severe than usual for this time of year. Labor Department seasonal models had forecast a spike of nearly 15,000 claims. Although jobless claims remain one of the timeliest indicators of labour market health, economists warn that the broader picture reflects a fragile balance between low layoffs and weak hiring.
Hiring slows as tariff uncertainty looms
While layoffs remain low, the hiring trend continues to soften. June’s jobs report showed the unemployment rate edged down to 4.1 per cent, but primarily due to a shrinking labour force participation rate, which hit a 2.5-year low. Although 147,000 jobs were added, gains were concentrated in a few sectors, underscoring limited opportunities for job seekers. The median duration of unemployment rose to 10.1 weeks in June from 9.5 weeks in May, reflecting growing difficulty for the unemployed to find new positions. Continuing claims, a proxy for hiring activity, rose by 10,000 to 1.965 million—the highest level since November 2021.Economists also point to US President Donald Trump’s newly announced tariff increases as a growing source of business uncertainty, which could suppress hiring further. More than 20 trade partners have been notified of new duties, including a 50 per cent tariff on copper imports, and further levies on semiconductors and pharmaceuticals are expected. While the Federal Reserve held rates steady last month, markets are pricing in potential rate cuts beginning in September, especially if the impact of tariffs weighs on inflation and economic growth.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped by 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 227,000 for the week ending July 5, the Labor Department reported on July 10.

The data was impacted by the July 4th holiday, which tends to cause fluctuations in reporting. Non-seasonally adjusted claims rose by over 10,000, largely due to expected auto industry retooling shutdowns in states like Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee. Hiring slows as tariff uncertainty looms While layoffs remain low, the hiring trend continues to soften. Thirty-one workers were rescued after the collapse of one industrial tunnel in Wilmington, Los Angeles, United States, on Wednesday, said the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). The collapse occurred deep within the Los Angeles Effluent Outfall Tunnel, the $630.5 million Clearwater project, which is currently under construction. The collapse of the tunnel was reported just before 8 pm near the intersection of South Figueroa Street and Q Street.According to a report in the New York Times, Fire Department personnel were sent to the accident site, including specially trained search and rescue teams, equipped to handle confined-space tunnel rescues. The incident occurred in the Clearwater Project, which is designed to carry treated, clean wastewater from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant to the ocean.L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn confirmed that all 31 workers were safely rescued, with no visible injuries reported. To escape the collapsing section of the tunnel, the workers had to climb over a 12- to 15-foot-high mound of soil.
What went wrong in Tunnel?
Before the structure partially collapsed, workers were operating a tunnel boring machine, which is used to excavate tunnels. Fire officials stated that when the loose dirt fell, it was more than 15 feet high, according to a report by NBC Los Angeles."It was determined that a structure failure of the tunnel line occurred approximately 5 to 6 miles in..." said LAFD chief Villanueva. "The workers had to climb through debris. They had to make themselves out through, and then rescuers actually came to them to assist them out."Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass hailed the effort of LAFD in a post on X, stating that over 100 LAFD responders have been deployed, including Urban Search and Rescue teams and acted immediately to respond to this emergency.“I just spoke with many of the workers who were trapped,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass shared in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Thank you to all of our brave first responders who acted immediately. You are L.A.'s true heroes.”“The City of Los Angeles has mobilised resources to the tunnel collapse in Wilmington. More than 100 LAFD responders have been deployed, including Urban Search and Rescue teams. Thank you to all of those who are acting immediately to respond to this emergency,” Bass said in another post. The incident occurred nearly 6 miles inside the tunnel, making the rescue operation extremely challenging. The collapse happened at a location deep underground, about 450 feet below the surface, with only one access point located miles away, as per the HT report. The tunnel, being constructed by Flatiron Dragados, spans 7 miles in length and 18 feet in diameter. It's part of L.A. County’s Clearwater Project, aimed at upgrading the ageing wastewater infrastructure, which dates back to 1937 and 1958.
