The United States is debating one of the biggest questions of the AI era: what happens if artificial intelligence stops following human instructions? Growing concerns over increasingly autonomous AI systems have pushed US lawmakers to discuss the possibility of an emergency AI kill switch. The debate intensified after reports suggested an OpenAI model behaved unexpectedly during cybersecurity testing, allegedly finding ways to exploit vulnerabilities and breach another AI platform. Experts warn that next-generation AI agents could independently write code, search the internet, make decisions, and pursue objectives without direct human approval. The discussion has also revived warnings made years ago by physicist Stephen Hawking, who cautioned that advanced AI could pose a threat to humanity if left unchecked.

US President Donald Trump has claimed that newly declassified intelligence reveals major vulnerabilities in America's election system and alleged that China obtained 220 million US voter files beginning during the 2020 election cycle. Speaking from the White House, Trump said the data included sensitive voter information and argued that it exposed the country to foreign interference. He also announced that the declassified documents would be released publicly and renewed his call for Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require voter identification, proof of citizenship and tighter rules on mail-in voting. While US media noted that the documents are newly declassified, they also reported that many of the security concerns referenced have been publicly discussed for years. Trump's broader allegations about the 2020 election remain disputed, and the proposed legislation continues to face significant political hurdles in Congress.

The Trump administration has announced a major overhaul of US legal immigration rules by ending the long-standing policy that allowed international students, exchange visitors and foreign journalists to remain in the country for the duration of their approved programs. Under the new regulations, international students and exchange visitors will receive visas valid for a maximum of four years, while foreign journalists will be limited to 240 days and Chinese journalists to just 90 days. Those wishing to stay longer must apply for extensions or leave the United States and seek new admission. The Department of Homeland Security says the changes are intended to strengthen oversight and prevent long-term visa misuse, while critics argue the policy could discourage global talent, affect American universities and complicate international media operations. The rule is expected to take effect 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, pending congressional review.

A US federal judge has dismissed a $32.8 billion lawsuit against Apple that accused the company of failing to prevent child sexual abuse material (CSAM) from being stored and shared on iCloud. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of more than 2,600 alleged victims, claimed Apple should have done more to detect and block abusive content on its cloud platform. Plaintiffs also sought a court order requiring Apple to introduce stronger safeguards for iCloud. However, the California federal court ruled that Apple is protected under Section 230 of the US Communications Decency Act, which generally shields online platforms from liability for user-generated content. The judge also noted that no current federal law requires Apple to proactively develop or deploy technology to detect and report child sexual abuse material.

New York becomes first US state to halt new AI data centres: Here's why

Chicago-based nuclear fuel company has denied the concerns over the use of ANEEL (Advanced Nuclear Energy for Enriched Life), an advanced nuclear fuel, in existing pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs). The company known as Clean Core Thorium Energy (CCTE) claimed that the thorium-based fuel improves significant reactor safety characteristics and can be positioned without the need for modifications to reactor designs or control systems. In a report published in the journal Nuclear Engineering and Design, researchers from Clean Core, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Toronto-based Innovative Nuclear Solutions, and San Diego-based Structural Integrity Associates countered the discovery of a previous study by scientists at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). Research on the BARC paper had challenged that deploying ANEEL in the existing PHWR fleet of India would require reactor redesigns and would likely increase safety risks under accident conditions. The paper stated that the advanced nuclear fuel produces nearly six times more energy than conventional natural uranium fuel. CCTE is the second American company to have secured an export license from the US Department of Energy for supplying nuclear technology to India in nearly 20 years, and has developed the patented thorium-based fuel called ANEEL. The fuel combines thorium with high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) for use in Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). CCTE said ANEEL is compatible with India's fleet of PHWRs, which make up the majority of the country's operational nuclear reactors. In December 2024, state-run NTPC Ltd partnered with the company to explore the development and deployment of ANEEL fuel at existing nuclear power plants in India, subject to regulatory approvals. However, a paper published in Current Science in January by scientists from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) raised concerns about introducing ANEEL into India's existing PHWRs. The researchers concluded that the thorium-HALEU fuel was not a straightforward replacement for natural uranium and that significant modifications to existing reactors would be necessary before it could be used. Responding to these concerns, CCTE maintained that ANEEL is a "plug-and-play" alternative to conventional natural uranium fuel bundles. The company argued that the fuel retains the same external dimensions and overall geometry as existing fuel assemblies, with changes confined only to the internal pin design and fuel composition.&nbsp; Also read: <a href="New healthcare divide: Which countries are winning race to deploy AI in public health? While an earlier study by BARC scientists estimated that the effectiveness of the reactor's shutdown system would fall by about 26 per cent, requiring modifications to maintain safety margins, CCTE estimated a much smaller decline of up to 16 per cent. According to the company, the current Primary Shutdown System would still retain an estimated safety margin of 70 mk, well above the required 50 mk, making any redesign unnecessary. The paper also disputed concerns over coolant void reactivity (CVR), an important reactor safety parameter. BARC had argued that thorium-HALEU fuel could increase CVR, raising safety risks during a loss-of-coolant accident. However, CCTE claimed ANEEL actually improves reactor safety by reducing the potential power surge from 16.4 mk with conventional uranium fuel to 13.3 mk. It attributed this to the fuel's ring-wise design and burnable absorbers. Although HALEU-thorium fuel has a higher upfront cost, CCTE argued this would be offset over time through lower uranium consumption, greater energy generation and reduced spent fuel management costs.

New York is set to become the first U.S. state to ban smart glasses across its entire court system. Beginning July 20, all camera- and microphone-equipped smart eyewear, including Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses and prescription smart glasses, will be prohibited inside state, county, city, town, and village courts. Court officials say the move is aimed at preventing covert recordings of legal proceedings. Visitors, lawyers, and court staff will be required to surrender smart glasses before entering court buildings. The decision follows growing concerns over AI-powered wearable devices and comes after Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses drew attention during a recent U.S. court appearance.

US President Donald Trump confirmed that Apple will collaborate with Intel to design and manufacture semiconductor chips within the United States. Announcing the development on the Truth Social platform, Trump stressed that it is not just important to design chips but to produce chips domestically. Trump also claimed that the US government acquired 10 per cent equity in Intel, helping the company's overall valuation to shoot up to USD600 billion from USD100 billion. Consequently, the US government's holding in the company is now over USD60 billion in just nine months. A US teen who survived a school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, which took place in January 2025, has registered a lawsuit against the manufacturer of an AI gun detection system, as the technology failed to flag the handgun used in the attack. The incident, which took place in the Antioch High School cafeteria, has claimed the lives of two people, including a 16-year-old girl and the 17-year-old gunman, Solomon Henderson. In 2023, the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) Board approved a $1 million contract to deploy AI-powered gun detection software across its existing network of surveillance cameras and security systems. The technology was intended to identify potential shooters and improve school safety. However, a lawsuit filed in Davidson County last month alleges that security firm Omnilert either knew or should have been aware of major operational shortcomings in its gun-detection technology that could lead to failures in identifying threats. "Omnilert knew, or reasonably should have known, of significant operational limitations in its gun detection system that could result in detection failures during actual emergencies, including limitations based on camera placement, proximity of the weapon to camera sensors, camera angle, lighting, and weapon visibility," the lawsuit stated.&nbsp; The complaint further claims that after the Nashville incident, Omnilert updated its website to draw attention to the system's significant blind spots and limitations. "Omnilert's own post-shooting revisions to its commercial website, adding for the first time disclosures that the system is subject to "falsealerts" and that human verification is designed to ‘reduce false alerts’, confirm that Omnilert possessed knowledge of these limitations at the time of sale and deployment." Chris Smith, one of the attorneys representing the teenager involved in the case, told ArcTechnica that he was initially doubtful about the effectiveness and reliability of AI-based gun detection technology. The incident erupted after the ceremony for Sem Yeto High School, which started at 6 pm local time. Meanwhile, the police couldn't publicly identify the mass shooting victims "pending next-of-kin notification and to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation". A lawsuit filed in Davidson County last month alleges that security firm Omnilert either knew or should have been aware of major operational shortcomings in its gun-detection technology that could lead to failures in identifying threats.

"Omnilert knew, or reasonably should have known, of significant operational limitations in its gun detection system that could result in detection failures during actual emergencies, including limitations based on camera placement, proximity of the weapon to camera sensors, camera angle, lighting, and weapon visibility," the lawsuit stated. The complaint further claims that after the Nashville incident, Omnilert updated its website to draw attention to the system's significant blind spots and limitations. "I just thought that it was kind of bullshit. I have a Tesla, and I think Tesla's self-driving is bullshit," he said. "It's not ready for prime time! How could you possibly be entrusting that? That's your plan to protect kids from school shootings? Why is this any better than a metal detector?" In a significant development, the Lee County Mosquito Control District in Florida has released sterile mosquitoes by drone to fight against invasive mosquitoes. The new method could enable mosquito control teams to cover areas that are difficult to reach while ensuring a more uniform distribution of insects, according to WGCU. Rachel Morreale, manager of the district's sterile insect technique program, stated that drones can improve the effectiveness of releases by accessing locations that are not easily reachable by road. "The reason why we like the drone and why it's so beneficial is that it helps us get a better distribution of these mosquitoes," she said. Lee County is deploying a Skydio X10 drone equipped with a specialised release cassette capable of holding up to 35,000 mosquitoes. However, Morreale explained that the district does not dump that full amount in a single spot. Instead, the drone gradually disperses them across a broad area to spread them out.&nbsp; Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/why-18-year-old-s-murder-case-has-sparked-political-battle-over-sikh-kirpans-in-uk-1780299448708">Why 18-year-old's murder case has sparked political battle over Sikh kirpans in UK | WION Decodes</a><h3>Invasive Aedes aegypti mosquito</h3>The initiative is formulated to curb the population of the invasive Aedes aegypti mosquito. As part of the programme, officials release laboratory-bred sterile male mosquitoes, which mate with wild female mosquitoes and produce eggs that fail to hatch, helping to reduce future generations. Officials stressed that the mosquitoes being released do not bite, as only males are used in the operation. The Skydio X10 drone can travel at speeds of up to 45 mph and remain in flight for around 40 minutes, allowing teams to cover large areas efficiently without relying on road access. The drone deployment complements Lee County’s existing sterile insect technique programme, which involves a closely monitored breeding process. Mosquitoes are raised to adulthood in roughly 10 days before being sterilised using X-ray technology similar to that used in medical facilities. The district has also developed a mosquito strain native to the Captiva and Fort Myers areas. To monitor their effectiveness, each sterile mosquito is coated with fluorescent powder, enabling researchers to track survival rates and recapture released insects in the wild. "Before we were stuck with whatever we could access by road, so having this drone means that we can actually put the mosquitoes in places where they want to be and get a better, even spread of mosquitoes all around," Morreale explained to WGCU.

"She said when she woke up, she saw my son Dave resting on her bosom. She saw blood on him, and by then his body was completely cold. She's a nurse, so she knew he was gone," George Fiji said. "She's devastated, but she's recovering," he added. According to his father, Dave was worried about the weather before the takeoff. "Since my son was a pilot, he told the pilot that there is zero visibility, and when there is zero visibility like this, we never fly," George Fiji said. However, the Robinson R66 pilot reportedly assured him that they would fly at a higher altitude. In response, the National Transportation Safety Board has launched a probe into the crash, but it has still not yet determined the real cause of the helicopter crash.
