COP27 extends by a day as leaders fail to reach consensus on contentious issues

The 27th Conference of Parties (COP27) which was scheduled to wrap up its work on Friday (November 18), has been extended by a day for Saturday (November 19)said Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said late Friday evening. The climate summit, held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, was intended to finish on Friday.
Yadav added several topics, including the mitigation work programme, the global trade on adaption, loss and damage, and climate financing are being debated as they remain contentious.
He said, "COP is a party-driven process and hence consensus on key issues is vital to the process. The extension is an attempt towards achieving just that," PTI reported.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change issued a formal draft of the agreement on Friday, but it omitted any reference to India's demand for the phase-down of all fossil fuels. The demand for phasing out fossil fuels, surprised experts since it was supported by the majority of developing and developed countries.

However, many claimed that rather than representing India's demand, the remark appeared to be a ply by India to deflect criticism of its usage of coal. This proposal made little forward on important topics including the replenishment of the adaption funds and a new collective quantifiable target for climate financing.
Additionally, the framework also committed the necessity for developed countries to achieve their "net negative carbon emissions by 2030" and their disproportionate use of the global carbon budget, which India and other developing and developed nations put great emphasises on during the summit.
