Pat Cummins explains how ‘super aggressive’ approach helped SRH shine in IPL 2024

SunRisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins wants his team to go‘all out’against Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024 Final on Sunday (May 26). Cummins led his team to thisseason’sfinal in his maiden attempt as a T20I captain, with analysts, experts and commentators calling his team the most-feared side in IPL 2024. The Aussie seamer explains how deploying the'super aggressive'approach helped SRH come this far in IPL 2024.

Cummins has had a successful two years since becomingAustralia’sODI and Test captain. He helped Australia win the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against India last year,alongsidewinning the 50-over World Cup against the Men in Blue at their home a few months later. However, he had not captained any T20 team till then.

Fast forward toDecember last year, SRH picked him for INR 20 crore and named him the captain right away. Although that move paid dividends as he led his team to the finals this year, Cummins admitted that hewasn’tsure of what to expect out of this.

"Imeanthatwould be great,"Cumminsonwinning another trophy as a captain.

"Ithink the run [of winning trophies] has got to stop at some point... yeah, it has been a great couple of yearsbutIhadn'tcaptained in any T20 cricket before this series. So, Iwasn'ttoo sure what to expect,”he added.

The success mantra

SRH finished at the bottom in the previous season under Aiden Markram. The management did their homeworkahead oflastyear'sauction and picked some match-winners, including Travis Head and Cummins himself. Bringing Daniel Vettori to the backroom staff did wonders, with Cummins accepting the same.

"There have been a few changes this year. Obviously, Dan Vettori, as head coach, is a big one as well.Few other guys have come in this season, butI thinkat the start of theseasonyou map out the stylethatyou want to play to give yourself the best chance to win.Obviously,along thewayyou'reallowed to adapt and maybe change the personnel,"Cummins said.

"We were pretty strong with how we wanted to play - super-aggressive - and in a 14-game season,you'renot going to win every single game, but we think if we play that way,you'regoing towin most of them.That'skind of how it played out - there are little bumps that come along the way, butthat'sokay, but you try and make sure it stays on course,"he added.

Meanwhile,Cummins’SRH will rely on the opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Head to put them on the course of a win in the marquee clash against KKR at Chepauk in the IPL 2024 Final.
