Pat Cummins and Temba Bavuma have updates for their key players ahead of the second Test in Gqeberha. Australia outclassed South Africa by 214 runs in the first Test in Durban, with Matt Renshaw emerging as the hero for the visitors. The left-handed batter registered his highest Test score (190) in the first innings before scoring a valiant 82 in the second, propelling Australia to sit in the driver’s seat. Bavuma, however, boosted South Africa’s morale with positive news about seamer Kagiso Rabada’s potential comeback to the playing XI for the second Test.
Will Renshaw bat up the order?
Plenty of discussions broke out following Renshaw’s standout performance in Durban, with several experts back home suggesting his promotion in the batting order. Although he made his Test debut as an opener almost a decade ago, Renshaw’s purple patch at number five in the ODIs forced Australia to play him at the same position in the series opener at Kingsmead, where he flourished big time. Considering Australia is also keen on bringing the best of makeshift opener Travis Head, who was a regular middle-order batter in Australia’s XI for the longest time, Cummins hinted at swapping places for the remainder of the series. "Give us a few days; we'll look at the conditions of the next Test. I mean, it's got to be pretty compelling to move Renshaw from there," Cummins said. "But we've seen Travis Head down at No. 5 as well. We're always working out the six batters or seven plus [Alex Carey], and how is that going to function as a whole? So, if anything, I still think he [Renshaw] can be a great opener, and now he's got another string to his bow that he's found this week." Pressing on being flexible with the playing XI, given the conditions, Cummins said, "We're pretty certain that we like Marn [Labuschagne] at No. 3, Smithy at No. 4, and then, the six and seven felt pretty locked up. I think bringing in Maddo (Nic Maddinson), we really like the idea of bringing that flexibility, that unlocks a lot [such as] Trav back to No. 5, Renners down to No. 5, even Maddo himself at five. We haven't had that option [in] the last few years where we feel like we've got plenty of options at the top. "We're very big on that flexibility. I know you're probably sick of us talking about it, but why not next week we have different openers if the conditions take us somewhere different, or swapping out the batting orders between innings. I think having the structure that we do now with a few guys that can open, that's really unlocked that,” he continued.
Rabada set to return for 2nd Test
South Africa played mediocre cricket in Durban, with none of the fast bowlers, barring Anrich Nortje, doing much damage to the Aussies. Rabada, their premier pacer, was left out of the playing XI as he continued to recover from his hamstring injury. Speaking on his injury update, captain Bavuma said, "'KG' looks good. He's as bubbly as ever within the changing room. "His non-selection was more from a precautionary point of view given the extra couple of days. SA vs AUS 2nd Test: Cummins hints at Renshaw order shift as Rabada prepares to return

The Australian cricket team is back in South Africa to play a Test series for the first time since the infamous Sandpapergate scandal in 2018. The Test series starts on Friday (Oct 9) in Durban, and Aussie skipper Pat Cummins spoke to reporters at the press conference on the eve of the match and talked about the incident. Cummins also acknowledged that Usman Khawaja, who was part of that Test as well, has told him about the content of his book, which is set to be released on November 10 – after the conclusion of the Test series.
Cummins on Khawaja's book and Sandpapergate
Khawaja had briefed Cummins about the contents of the book, reported Code Sports on Thursday (Oct 8). The former Aussie opener, who wrote the autobiography Sabr, has played 88 Tests, including 56 with Cummins and 36 of those under his captaincy. Cummins confirmed Khawaja talked to him about the book and said: "Yeah, Uz gave me a buzz a few weeks back, [saying] that he's releasing a book.""He didn't go into too much detail. He just basically gave me a heads-up that he's doing a book. As always, [my response was], 'No worries, you can tell your story. That's fine,'" he added.Cummins was also asked about Sandpapergate and how it impacts the Australian team in the present, to which he said: "All I can say is [that] as a group, we've moved on. [I am] very happy with the last eight or nine years, how we've been as a group and evolved, and obviously my focus is on captaining the cricket team."
What was Sandpapergate?
During the Newlands Test in Cape Town, South Africa was batting when the cameras caught Aussie player Cameron Bancroft rubbing sandpaper on the ball to gain an unfair advantage. In the aftermath, skipper Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were stripped of their leadership roles, and all three players – Smith, Warner, and Bancroft – served long bans from the game.

Australian ODI captain Pat Cummins is set to return to play his first 50-over match in two years. Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has asked the team to move on from struggling batter Marnus Labuschagne after his recent failure in the two-Test series against Bangladesh. His last good performance, however, came during the Boxing Day Test against India in December 2024 in Border-Gavaskar Trophy, when he scored 72 and 70 across two innings. In 11 Tests and 20 innings played since, Labuschagne has the best of 65 against England in Ashes at the Gabba and 51 not out in the second innings of Perth Test. Overall, he has managed just 392 runs at an average of nearly 22 - half of his career average.
What does Cummins think?
Aussie skipper Cummins did not go as far as Ponting but agreed that Labuschagne needs to score runs. "We know he's (Labuschagne) class when he's at his best. And going into the series, we thought he was pretty close to his best. If you can't score off the back foot in Test cricket then batting becomes a hard game. So I well and truly think it's time to have a look at somebody else." How bad is Labuschagne's form? Labuschagne has played 65 Tests, scoring 4,730 runs at an average of nearly 44 with 11 hundreds, 25 fifties and a best of 215. But he needs to start transferring that into runs out there, so we'll see in the next couple of weeks." Australia next play a Test series in South Africa from October 9.

Australian captain Pat Cummins made no excuses for his team’s shocking nine-wicket loss against Bangladesh in the first of the two Tests in Darwin on Sunday (Aug 16). Cummins led a full-strength Australian XI for the series opener but failed to replicate Steve Waugh, who guided Australia to an innings win over Bangladesh at the very venue 23 years ago. Age doesn’t seem to be a problem for Mitchell Starc, Australian ODI captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, the three pace veterans the Australia wish to have on board for their title defence in the 2027 ODI World Cup. IPL 2026: Why has Pat Cummins been fined after SRH’s defeat to GT?

Australia Test captain Pat Cummins has named his ‘new favourite player’, who is neither an Aussie nor even an Indian international yet. He is Rajasthan Royals opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Cummins, who returned to playing competitive cricket for the first time since mid-December last year, was in awe of the swashbuckling opener Sooryavanshi, who slammed his second IPL hundred in just 36 balls the other night. After completing his fifty in 15 balls, for the third time, Vaibhav slammed the remaining 50 in the next 21 balls, breaking multiple records. The left-handed batter hammered five fours and 12 maximums, shortly after reaching his 1000 T20 runs in 473 balls, the fastest and the youngest to reach this milestone.

IPL 2026: Daniel Vettori clears air on Pat Cummins' availability, says 'probably in the next...'

Australia skipper Pat Cummins is the only foreign captain in the IPL and his late arrival in upcoming 2026 because of injury has ensured all 10 franchises are led by Indian players. Over the years, IPL has seen a change in appointing Indians as captain instead of relying on foreign players. Cummins, being one of the most successful international skipper, is of course an exception. He also revealed that the language could be a barrier for an international captain while talking to young local players for which he relies on senior Indian players. Cummins, however, acknowledged that most of Indian players, both capped and uncapped, speak great English.
Cummins reveals barriers for international skippers in IPL
"Most of the guys speak really great English, but some of them don't, and there are local dialects, so that can be a little bit of a barrier for an international captain," Cummins said recently on Business of Sport podcast. Also Read - Luckiest player of IPL? IPL 2026: Major setback for RCB and SRH as Aussie duo to miss early matches

Australia Test and ODI skipper Pat Cummins says that he 'ran out of time' to become fit for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. Cummins was not included in Australia's final squad for the tournament, which begins Feb 7. The Aussie pacer is dealing with a back injury since Australia tour of Caribbean and has not taken part in much of Australia's competitive cricket played. The pacer last appeared in third of the five Ashes Tests at home against England. With the urn retained, Cummins decided to rest and try to be fit for the upcoming T20 World Cup, but alas, it wasn't meant to be for him.
Why Cummins isn't playing in T20 World Cp 2026 for Australia?
"I feel pretty good, just a minor setback and just ran out of time really," Cummins was quoted as saying to AAP. "We knew after the [Adelaide] Test match we were going to need somewhere between four and eight weeks to let the bone settle right down before then building back up. Initially, we thought it might only be four weeks, because I was feeling really good, but just had a follow-up scan. T20 World Cup 2026: Cummins included as Australia name 15-man squad; Hazlewood, David also get nod

Although he was far from regaining fitness in time for the home Ashes, per earlier reports, a rapid and early return for the third Test in Adelaide surprised everyone, as he led his team to a win and helped them retain the urn. The Test skipper then swiftly took his name off the squad for the remaining two matches, as he and Cricket Australia weren’t willing to risk his fitness heading into the T20 season. Head coach Andrew McDonald said Australia would name its final 15 before the deadline (Jan 2) but confirmed that the call on Cummins’ selection would be taken closer to the event. "Pat will have a scan, I think, in another four weeks, so that'll give us the information then on where he's at for the World Cup," McDonald said. "He'll be named in the squad of 15, and then we'll get that information as to where he's at." Meanwhile, speaking of Hazlewood and David, McDonald said the lanky quick has returned to bowling in the nets, while assuming that the recovery timeframe in David’s case would allow him to regain fitness for the T20 World Cup, which starts on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka. “Josh is returning to bowl. He looks as though he should be right in terms of possible timeframes,” McDonald said of Hazlewood. "I think the timeframe will be kind on TD as well. So, he should be available no matter what that injury is," McDonald said about Tim David’s injury on Monday.

Cummins and Hazlewood are out of Australia's squad for the fifth and final Ashes Test at the SCG.
