Dubai rains keeps 2 Indian wrestlers, on way to Olympics qualifiers, stranded

The Dubai rains have made headlines worldwideand have affected several people travelling to and from the city.Indian wrestlers Deepak Punia and Sujeet Kalakalalso bore the brunt of the Dubai rains. The duo'schances of qualifying for the Paris Olympics hit a roadblock as theywere left stranded at the Dubai International Airport due to unprecedented rains in the Gulf nation.

Deepak (86kg), who had come close to winning a medal at the previous Olympics in Tokyo, and Sujeet (65kg), were on their way to Bishkek to feature in the Asia Olympic qualifiers, i.e. the second-last qualifying event for Paris Olympicscommencing on Friday (April 19). However, the Dubai rains have interrupted their plans severely. Notably, the country has experiencedthe heaviest recorded rainfall ever, leading tomajor highways and roads being flooded whilethe airports arealso a completemess.

Thus, the two Kyrgyzstan-bound Indian wrestlers, who are being accompanied by Russian coach Kamal Malikov and physio Shubham Gupta, have been going through a lot. As a result, they have been forced to sleep on the floor and have no access to adequate food.

It is to be noted that Deepak and Sujeet have their weigh-in on Friday morning while the bouts are scheduled later in the day.

Talking to PTI, Sujeet's father said, "They have been stuck at the Dubai airport since April 16 and it seems the chance of qualifying for the Paris Olympics is slipping out of their hands as they are scheduled to compete tomorrow. They are not getting any flights to Bishkek. I am worried about them."
