Many of the aggrieved Twitter users took to, well, social media to vent their grievances. Along with their grievances, they posted short videos and screenshots of the responses to their tweets, showing how the number of likes and retweets had dwindled (drastically) over time.

Twitter meanwhile has issued a statement saying they are working on resolving the issue.

They also apologised for the inconvenience.

"Some people around the world are experiencing an issue with notifications, Likes, and Retweets. We’re working on resolving this and will follow up soon," Twitter said in its statement.

The social media giant however has not said what might be causing the problem. Nor has it specified by when the bug will be fixed.

Twitter has a global user base of close to 236 million active users. It was not certain how many of them were affected by the problem.

Earlier in February, a Twitter bug confused Android users into believing they were viewing posts from random strangers when actually it was Twitter that was mislabelling usernames on retweets.
