According to reports, as many as 90 lakh trucks are expected to be off the road

Truck owners and operators have decided to observe a nationwide strike on Monday opposing the escalating increase in diesel prices and a sharp hike of third-party insurance premium. The strike began on Monday morning.

According to reports, as many as 90 lakh trucks are expected to be off the road. Workers feel that the hike in diesel prices is not due to high international prices but because of high taxes levied by the central and the state governments.

The workers demand the inclusion of diesel prices or petroleum products in the ambit Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Truck owners have also urged the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDAI) to bring down the hike in third party insurance premium, the authority has not yet responded to their demand, say reports.

The indefinite strike is likely to affect the supply chain leading to a hike in prices of perishable goods.
