Thirty people, including 27 children, died as the school bus carrying them fell into a gorge in Kangra district, Himachal Transport Minister Govind Singh Thakur said.

There were some 45 children in the bus. The accident took place in Kangra's Nurpur.Most ofthose killed were students of elementary classes, aged below ten.

The students of the Wazir Ram Singh Pathania Memorial Public Schoolwere on their way home when their bus fell into the gorge near Gurchal village on the Nurpur-Chamba road, 300 km from the state capital Shimla.

School bus driver, 67-year-old Madan Lal, and two women teachers also died in the accident, Kangra Superintendent of Police Santosh Patial said.

Local BJP MLA, Rakesh Pathania, who was on the spot, said 27 bodies were recovered while two more had been spotted.

At least 13 seriously injured persons were rushed to a hospital in Pathankot where one of them succumbed to injuries, an official said. The condition of other injured persons was also critical, he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths on Twitter.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakurannounced Rs 5 lakhs each for the family of the accident victims.

"I've been told 9 children died and several got injured in the incident," Himachal Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur earlier told ANI news agency.

"Spoken with the Chief Secretary, DG and Dy Commissioner. NDRF immediately deployed. Rescue operation underway with the help of locals. I've ordered for magisterial probe," he added.

News reports said the gorge was over a 100 metres deep and that after it fell in, it could not be seen from the road above. The bodies were extricated from the rubble with the assistance of local youth.

Preliminary enquiries suggested the accident occurred as the driver lost control over the bus which veered off the road
