Kolkata horror: ‘Everything was altered at crime scene,’ CBI’s big claim in SC; Bengal police fire back

India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and West Bengal police locked horns Friday (Aug 30) amid claims that the crime scene of the rape and murder caseatKolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital may have been “compromised”.
The CBI earlier alleged that the crime scene where the 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and murdered was tampered with. The central agency claimed in India’s Supreme Court that the victim’s family was misled over their daughter’s death and that efforts were made to brush off the gruesome incident as “suicide.”
Kolkata police were quick to retaliate as CBI’s allegations directly raised a question of their efficiency. They claimed that all individuals present at the scene, as depicted in a photograph, were fully authorised to be there. Amidst this, a photo went viral on social media showing a crowd present inside the seminar hall where the incident took place.

Kolkata police clarified all people present in the hall were part of the investigative team.
"We are talking about the photo in question. The area is cordoned off. The body is behind it. I am telling you the names of all the people who are in the picture and are a part of the investigation team," claimed Indira Mukherjee, DCP Central, Kolkata police.

The police further claimed that the photo was taken on August 9, after a preliminary investigation had already been completed.
In the country’s top court, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was representing the CBI, also highlighted the delay in filing the FIR.
"As we entered the fifth day of the investigation, everything was altered, including the crime scene," he added.
"The most shocking fact is that the first FIR was registered at 11:45 pm after cremation. The parents were told it was a suicide, then death and then friends of the doctor at the hospital insisted on videography. They also suspected something was amiss," Mehta said.
The CBI also blamed the hospital administration for mishandling the sensitive matter.
Amidst the centre vs state fighton the case, protests have erupted across the country, with peopledemanding that thegovernmentstrictlyimplementanti-rape laws.
