Lok Sabha elections 2024: Samajwadi Party and Congress finalise seat-sharing plan

Congress leader in Uttar Pradesh On Wednesday, Avinash Pande declared that the party would contest only 17 of Uttar Pradesh's 80 Lok Sabha seats in the upcoming general elections.

He stated that candidates from the Samajwadi Party (SP) and other parties in the INDIA alliance will contest the remaining 63 seats.

Ajay Rai, the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress, said, "The NDA would be defeated by the INDIA alliance in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The Congress-Samajwadi Party's approach is to steadfastly support one another."

The Congress will contest the seats in Kanpur City, Fatehpur Sekri, Basgaon, Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Maharajganj, Amroha, Jhansi, Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad, Mathura, Sitapur, Barabanki, and Deoria in addition to Rae Bareli, Amethi, and Varanasi, as per Naresh Uttam Patel, the state chief of the SP.

Earlier in the day SP chief Akhilesh Yadav was quoted saying, 'All's well that ends well', suggestingthat the seat-sharing discussions with Congress for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections have concluded.

"Everything will be out in the open soon," Yadav stated.

When asked how many Lok Sabha seats the Samajwadi Party would contest in UP, Yadav responded, "As many as we can compete, the maximum.”


This year's Lok Sabha elections are slated for April and May.

On Monday, the party led by Akhilesh Yadav declared the names of 11 more candidates for the Lok Sabha elections; on January 30, the party had declared 16 candidates.
