Three people were killed and several injured in the attack at Nirankari Bhawan in Amritsar's Rajasansi village on Sunday, IG (Border) Surinder Pal Singh Parmar said.

Reports said the attack occurred during a religious ceremony being held at Nirankari Bhawan.

Eyewitnesses said two bike-borne masked men came to the Nirankari Dera and threw a grenade at the congregation.

The victims were rushed to the nearest hospital, and police have begun an investigation.

The attack comes against the backdrop of multiple alerts issued by the intelligence agencies warning of the presence of Kashmiri terrorists in the state.

The state was put on alert after four persons snatched an SUV from its driver at gunpoint near Madhopur in Pathankot district last week.

Posters were also put up in the Amritsar region asking locals to provide information on al-Qaeda operative Zakir Musa, who was suspected to have entered the state.
