Following in the path of successful real-life-inspired thrillers, SonyLIV has announced a new show called Manavat Murders. The thriller series will be based on the real-life tragic incidents that rocked rural Maharashtra in the 70s. Directed by Ashish Bende, the show will be led by director-actor Ashutosh Gowariker in the role of Ramakant S. Kulkarni, an esteemed CID Detective, also known as India's Sherlock Holmes.
In the show, Ashutosh Gowariker will take on the role as a calm and composed officer who was able to crack one of the most complex cases in history. The series will follow his efforts to solve a string of bizarre murders in rural Maharashtra during the 1970s, all while running against time.
Ashutosh Gowariker on playing Sherlock Holmes of India
In Manavat Murders, Ashutosh will take up a challenging role. On the role, he said, "I feel extremely fortunate to have been chosen to portray the character of Mr. Ramakant S. Kulkarni, the Police Officer of Bombay CID, who absolutely deserves to be showcased for the audiences today. He solved numerous cases that might have otherwise remained unsolved, including the infamous Manvat Murders. He was known as the Sherlock Holmes of India.”
He added, “His autobiography, “Footprints on the Sands of Crime”, provided amazing insights into what his process was, his eye for detail, the way he handled suspects and made them confess – and how he believed in “searching for the truth, beyond the truth!”
On his co-actors, Ashutosh said, “Another exciting aspect of this Show was my collaboration with Makarand Anaspure after several years (last one being Sarkarnama in 1998) and working with two of my favorite actresses – Sonali Kulkarni and Sai Tamhankar. Working with them was like a crash course in acting. I was also excited to collaborate with Director Ashish Bende, who had a deep understanding of this Story, Genre and most importantly, my Character.”
Ashutosh met the family of Ramakant S. Kulkarni before starting filming. He met with his daughter Anita Bhogle and her husband Harsha Bhogle, to gain a deep understanding of his character.
