India beat Bangladesh by seven wickets in the three-match T20I series opener in Gwalior on Sunday (Oct 6). Mayank Yadav, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pacer, made his debut after making a mark in the IPL. The speedster returned with match figures of 4-1-21-1. After the match, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali made a big claim on Mayank's chances to make it to the India squad for the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, to be held in Australia in late 2024. It will be a five-match Test series, which gets underway on November 22 in Perth.
'I hope that he remains fit and goes to Australia'
Speaking on Mayank's debut, Basit praised the newcomer and said on his YouTube channel, "It was a dream debut for Mayank Yadav. He started with a maiden and even clocked 149.9 kmph. He has come from an injury, which is why his speeds have not been 157 or 158. Just imagine if he had been given the new ball instead of Hardik Pandya. He instilled fear." He further opined, "If you guys saw the match, batters did not play him on the front foot. I hope that he remains fit and goes to Australia."
Further, Basit lauded the new-look India line-up, who demolished Bangladesh in the series opener. "India have changed cricket (with their dominance). Bangladesh is just an appetiser (for them). Yeh IPL eleven hai, India ki team nahi hai (This is an IPL XI, not the regular Indian team). There was no (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, no (Shubman) Gill, no Axar Patel, no Rishabh Pant, no (Shreyas) Iyer; (Ravi) Bishnoi did not play. And still, they hammered them in just 11-something overs, finishing with a six from (Hardik) Pandya," he added.
The first T20I saw Surya & Co. opt to bowl first and ride on Arshdeep Singh's 3 for 14 and Varun Chakravarthy's 3 for 31 to dismiss the visitors for 127 in 19.5 overs. In reply, India ended the run-chase in 11.5 overs, courtesy of Sanju Samson and Surya's quickfire 29 apiece and Hardik Pandya's 16-ball 39*.
