IPL 2024: MS Dhoni creates another record with 9-ball 28 against LSG

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter MS Dhoni has become the first player to score 500 or more runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after the age of 40. Dhoni reached the milestone during the match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 19. MSD played an unbeaten innings of 9-ball 28 to create the record.

The 42-year-old, who will turn 43 in July, has played 46 matches after age of 40 and has batted in 37 innings during those matches. He now has exact 500 runs to his name after 40, at an average of 33 and a strike rate of 140. His highest score during the period is 50 not out to go with his 39 fours and 30 sixes as well.

Before Dhoni, Chris Gayle held the record of most runs in IPL after turning 40. Gayle had 481 runs to his name in 17 matches he played after crossing 40. India coach Rahul Dravid is third on the list with 471 runs in 18 matches while Adam Gilchrist scored 466 runs in 20 matches. Former MI batter Sachin Tendulkar completes the top-five with 164 runs in eight games.

In the ongoing IPL, Dhoni comes down the order at number 7 and gets no more than 10 balls to play. The veteran, however, has thrilled the crowd whenever he bats with his belligerent stroke play. His cameo of 5-ball 20 not out against Mumbai Indian proved to the margin of win for CSK.

As for match against LSG, Dhoni hit one of the biggest sixes of the season - 101 metres. In the ongoing season, Dhoni has scored 87 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 255 without being dismissed even once. He has also hit eight sixes and seven fours in just 34 balls he has faced with a highest score of 37 not out.
