BMW cancels USD 2 billion battery cells contract with Northvolt
German luxury car maker BMW said on Thursday that it has canceled a 2 billion euros (USD 2.15 billion) order for battery cells from Northvolt for EVs. Various German publications revealed that Northvolt failed to adhere to the timelines in a steadfast supply agreement signed in 2020. Northvolt and the BMW Group have now mutually agreed on a strategic refocusing of Northvolt’s future work on the further development of the next generation of battery cells, BMW said.
Thus, the BMW Group will continue to work on building a solid European battery cell supplier for high-performance and sustainable solutions.

In another related news, BMW Group has made a giant leap in manufacturing process improvement adopting custom 3D printed gripper robots in its Munich based automobile manufacturing plant. This has evolved as the new approach has helped to significantly increase productivity within production lines which include the assembly of the celebrated BMW i4 electric car. These novel bioinspired grippers are 30% lighter than conventional grippers but have a rated load of 110 kg and thus improve productivity and decrease the emission of carbon dioxide.

BMW has now moved to apply these advanced robots across all of its manufacturing facilities globally, using both SLS and LPt for different activities and functions; for instance, supervising the integration of CFRP roofs in high-performance BMW M GmbH vehicles. In 2023, the BMW Group was able to produce more than 400000 parts by using the technology referred to as additive manufacturing.
BMW Additive Manufacturing is overseen by Jens Ertel, and he has described many benefits of this method, among which are; shorter time required to produce tools and robots, running costs savings across production lines, and increased efficiency. This strategy points out to BMW’s steadfast approach in embracing the additive manufacturing for sustainable and high-performance automotive components across the globe.
