Hamas' attack and Israel's retaliation

The war in Gaza was triggered when Palestinian Hamas militants attacked southern Israel (on Oct7 last year), killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 as hostages, according to Israeli tallies. More than 100 hostages remain held by Hamas.

Israel's subsequent military assault on Gaza has killed more than 41,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry.

On Monday, the Israeli military also said thatit enlisted 300,000 reservists since the start of the war - 82 per centmen and 18 per centwomen and nearly half of them aged 20 to 29.

Tens of thousands of rockets fired into Israel

Since the start of the conflict, 13,200 rockets were fired into Israel from Gaza. Another 12,400 were fired from Lebanon, while 60 came from Syria, 180 from Yemen and 400 from Iran, the military said.

It said it killed more than 800 "terrorists" in Lebanon, where 4,900 targets had been struck from the air along with about 6,000 ground targets. Over the past year, Israel arrested more than 5,000 suspects in the West Bank and Jordan Valley.

The military further said it killed eight Gaza militant brigade commanders, about 30 battalion commanders and 165 company commanders over the past year.

October 7 commemorations begin

With candles, prayers and music, commemorations for the October 7 attack began in Israel's Tel Avivto mark the first anniversary of the war.

Picture of those killed appeared on a screen at the entrance to the ceremony, as hundreds gathered to light candles at a makeshift shrine, leave handwritten notes or simply embrace each other, a report by the news agency AFP said.

"Coming to this event one year after this terrible massacre that happened on October 7, it's very touching, it's very breathtaking," one of the organisers of the event told AFP.

The first anniversary of the war came as Israel is engaged in a conflict with Iran-aligned Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and is preparing to retaliate against Iran's massive missile attack last week, raising fears of an even wider conflict in West Asia.
