‘Huge disappointment,’ Ukraine’s Zelensky irked over PM Modi’s visit to Russia

As Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Moscow on Monday (Jul 8) to meet his 'dear friend' Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Volodymyr Zelensky of neighbouring Ukraine couldn’t hold back his anger. Terming Modi's two-day visit to Russia a "huge disappointment," he said it was "a devastating blow to peace efforts." The statement came after Russian missiles targeted Ukrainian cities, including a children's hospital in Kyiv, which killed more than 40 people in aday.
“It is a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day,” Zelensky wrote on microblogging website X.
Modi's stern message to Putin
PM Modi on Tuesday (Jul 9) addressed the Indian diaspora in the Russian capitalwhere he didn't mention Russia's war in Ukraine but hailed the relationship between New Delhi and Moscow. However, the Indian leader during a bilateral meeting did mention the Ukraine war and said it was "not a solution." PM Modi also said that the murder of children gave him immense pain.
"Whether it be war, conflicts, or terror attacks, everyone who believes in humanity is pained when there is loss of lives. But when innocent children are murdered, when we see innocent children dying, it is heart-wrenching and that pain is immense. I also had a discussion about this with you," PM Modi told Putin.

US expresses concern
Earlier, the US also reacted toModi's visit to Russia, urging India to press Russia to respect Ukraine's territorial integrity.
US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said, "India is a strategic partner with whom we engage in a full and frank dialogue. And that includes our concerns about their relationship with Russia.”
“But as I said, we made quite clear directly with India our concerns about their relationship with Russia. So we would hope India and any other country, when they engage with Russia, would make clear that Russia should respect the UN charter, should respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said.
PM Modi was hosted by Putin at his official residence at Novo-Ogaryovo for a “private engagement” on Monday.
It is PM Modi's first visit to Russia since the Ukraine war broke out. After his Russia visit, Modi will embark for Austria, becoming the first Indian prime minister in 41 years to visit Vienna.
