PM inaugurates key Ladakh projects, including Leh Airport’s new terminal, Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, Petroglyph Park & 40 water bodies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday virtually inaugurated and dedicated five major development initiatives worth around ₹3,350 crore in Ladakh, focusing on strengthening connectivity, improving energy infrastructure, preserving the region’s ancient heritage and enhancing water security. The projects, inaugurated through video conferencing at around 12:30 pm, include a new passenger terminal building at Leh Airport, the 298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, a small hydropower project and transmission line, India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park, and 40 water bodies developed across 40 villages under Project Him Sarovar. The initiatives are expected to improve civilian connectivity, strengthen strategic mobility for the Armed Forces and support the region’s long-term development. A major highlight of the inauguration was the new passenger terminal building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, constructed at a cost of ₹640 crore. Spread across 23,800 square metres, the terminal has been designed to handle 35 lakh passengers annually. Equipped with modern passenger amenities and incorporating geothermal energy to improve energy efficiency, the facility seeks to balance growing aviation requirements with Ladakh’s environmentally sensitive landscape. The terminal also incorporates elements of Ladakh’s cultural heritage, combining contemporary airport infrastructure with the region’s distinctive architectural and cultural identity. The facility is expected to enhance passenger convenience and strengthen air connectivity between Ladakh and the rest of the country. The Prime Minister also dedicated to the nation the 298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Connecting Nimmu in Leh with Darcha in Himachal Pradesh through the remote Zanskar Valley, the road provides an alternative connectivity corridor to Ladakh, supplementing the existing Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh highways. Traversing difficult Himalayan terrain, including the high-altitude Shinkun La Pass, the road represents a significant engineering achievement and carries considerable strategic importance. The alternative route is expected to strengthen logistical support and operational mobility for the Armed Forces, while improving access to healthcare, education, markets and other essential services for residents of Zanskar and adjoining areas. As part of efforts to improve energy infrastructure and harness Ladakh’s renewable energy potential, the Prime Minister inaugurated the 9 MW Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project and the 66 kV Double-Circuit Dah-Hanu-Khaltsi Transmission Line. The two projects are expected to strengthen power evacuation infrastructure and improve the reliability of the electricity network in the region. With Ladakh’s geographical conditions offering considerable potential for renewable energy, the initiatives mark another step towards utilising local hydropower resources and improving the region’s energy security. In a major step towards preserving Ladakh’s archaeological heritage, PM Modi inaugurated India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat in Leh. Ladakh is home to hundreds of prehistoric rock-art sites featuring carvings of animals, human figures and symbolic representations that provide insights into the region’s ancient human settlements and cultural evolution. The conservation park will provide a dedicated space for protecting these vulnerable archaeological remains, raising public awareness and encouraging responsible heritage tourism. The Prime Minister also inaugurated 40 water bodies developed across 40 villages under Project Him Sarovar, aimed at addressing Ladakh’s distinctive water management challenges. Despite receiving substantial water resources from snowmelt and glacial runoff during certain periods, the region faces seasonal shortages, particularly during the crucial sowing season when agricultural demand rises. Together, the five initiatives reflect a broad development push in Ladakh, bringing strategic infrastructure, sustainable energy, heritage conservation and water management into focus.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi completes 25 years in public office, his journey has taken him from Gujarat to the centre of India’s national and global politics. Modi first took the oath as Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001. Over the years, several initiatives launched under his leadership have changed how India delivers welfare, expands financial inclusion and engages with the world. Here are five ideas that have attracted global attention and shaped India’s development story. UPI and India Stack: Taking digital payments to the world One of the biggest changes has been India’s Digital Public Infrastructure. Aadhaar, Jan Dhan accounts and mobile connectivity created the base for direct benefit transfers, while UPI transformed digital payments. UPI recorded 24.51 billion transactions worth nearly ₹29.82 lakh crore in August 2026, according to NPCI data. The number of banks live on the platform also reached 752. The scale of digital welfare has also grown. The government’s Direct Benefit Transfer platform shows cumulative transfers of more than ₹53.72 lakh crore and estimated gains of over ₹5.14 lakh crore. PM MUDRA Yojana: Taking credit to small businesses The Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana was launched in 2015 to provide collateral-free institutional credit to micro businesses. The latest government data shows that 59.14 crore MUDRA loans worth ₹41.71 lakh crore had been sanctioned by June 2026. The scheme now provides loans of up to ₹20 lakh under the Tarun Plus category for eligible borrowers who have successfully repaid earlier Tarun loans. The idea was to make formal credit available to small entrepreneurs who often find it difficult to access traditional bank finance. Ayushman Bharat: Expanding health coverage Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY provides health cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation. As of June 2026, the scheme had authorised 12.69 crore hospital admissions worth ₹1.92 lakh crore through a network of 37,413 public and private hospitals. The scheme has also been expanded to cover senior citizens aged 70 and above, while PM-JAY is now operational across all 36 States and Union Territories.
A video from the BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi went viral on social media, showing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking Chinese President Xi Jinping, “Is it okay?” Several media reports claimed that PM Modi asked Xi the question because the Chinese president appeared uncomfortable during the summit and did not feel well. Meanwhile, several social media posts and reports claimed that many world leaders who attended the high-stakes summit in New Delhi fell ill after their India visit. However, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has fact-checked the claims. It is then that PM Modi pauses his speech and asks Xi whether ‘it was okay’, possibly asking if the technical problem was resolved rather than asking about his health.

India's UPI ecosystem is entering a new phase. Payments up to ₹2,000 will continue to remain free, protecting everyday users and small merchants. However, larger merchant transactions above ₹2,000 will attract a 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR), capped at ₹300. Consumers will not pay the charge directly, but the move is aimed at making India's digital payments infrastructure more financially sustainable as UPI volumes continue to surge. The debate now is who ultimately bears the cost of the world's largest real-time payments network.

Marking two decades since its inception, the expanded 11-member BRICS bloc is pushing to transform the Global South from passive "rule-takers" into active "rule-shapers" of the international system. As world leaders gather in New Delhi, the key question remains whether a diverse group of nations can forge sustainable consensus, challenge Western-dominated institutions, and act as a stabilizing force in a fractured global order.

The verdict-BRICS at 20: Can the expanded bloc rewrite the rules of global power?

The Global South took center stage in New Delhi as Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed world leaders to Bharat Mandapam for the 18th BRICS Summit. Against the backdrop of escalating conflict in West Asia and threats to Strait of Hormuz commerce, Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, calling for a "win-win strategy" grounded in long-term peace and safe navigation. With major powers in attendance, the summit highlights emerging economies driving a new, resilient global order amid geopolitical storms.

PM Modi shares message of unity at BRICS Summit: 'We take everybody forward'

World leaders have gathered in New Delhi for the high-stakes 2026 BRICS Summit, hosted by India. The summit brings together heads of state and top diplomats to address key global issues, including economic integration, Global South priorities, trade mechanisms, and geopolitical challenges. With major bilateral meetings scheduled on the sidelines of the summit, the discussions are set to shape strategic partnerships across emerging economies.

BRICS summit 2026 in New Delhi: World leaders gather for high stakes meeting

Chinese President Xi Jinping heads to India for BRICS summit on Saturday that could mark the biggest step in a cautious thaw after years of hostility between the two countries. Xi's visit for the September 12-13 BRICS summit would be his first trip to India since October 2019, and follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's August 2025 visit to China. The nuclear-armed Asian giants have been been slowly improving ties since a deadly 2020 border clash. Flights, some visas and high-level contacts have gradually resumed. Can the Modi-Xi meeting help improve ties?

PM Modi's meeting with Xi Jinping to test India-China reset after border tensions

BRICS 2026 comes at a time of heightened global tensions, with the Russia-Ukraine war and the wider Middle East conflict putting diplomacy and peace efforts in focus. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly stressed that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward, including in his recent engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
