A fire broke out on New York’s Brooklyn Bridge during the fireworks show for the Fourth of July celebrations on Friday (Jul 4). Plumes of smoke were seen as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported.
Two fire engines were deployed at the scene to douse the blaze, the city’s fire department said. The flames erupted shortly before 10 pm local time on the bridge. The bridge had been closed to traffic due to the fireworks show.
According to a department spokesperson, such incidents are not unexpected and are the reason why the public is kept at a distance during fireworks.
Fireworks show takes place despite severe weather threat
Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks still went ahead in New York on Saturday night, even with storms moving through the area earlier in the evening.
The show was pushed up by around 20 minutes as weather conditions shifted across the Tri-State region. That small change ended up making a difference, with the worst of the storm passing just in time for the fireworks to begin.
Once it got underway, the skyline was filled with colour. Fireworks were launched from the Brooklyn Bridge and from barges on the East and Hudson Rivers, lighting up large parts of lower Manhattan. People lined the waterfront and open viewpoints, trying to catch whatever view they could.
