Biden denounces political violence, calls for unity after Trump assassination attempt

There is no place for political violence in the United States, President Joe Biden said in remarks on Sunday (July 14) after his election rival Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt.
"Mr Trump is a former president. Every resource is being provided for his security. All security measures will be provided for Republican National Convention that will start tomorrow. We must unite as one nation," Biden said.
"We must unite as one nation to demonstrate who we are," Biden said in televised remarks from the White House, adding that he had a "short but good" conversation with Trump in the wake of the Saturday shooting.
"We don't yet have any information about themotiveof the shooter. We know who he is. I urge everyone, please don't make assumptions about his motives or his affiliations," Biden said, adding he would address the nation from the White House later in the day.

Biden, 81, was speaking from the Roosevelt Room of the White House, a day after he gave a brief statement near his beach retreat in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
Earlier on Sunday (July 14), Donald Trump called for Americans to unite in his first comment after surviving an assassination attempt.
The 78-year-old former president was hit in the ear at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, while the shooter and a bystander were killed and two spectators critically injured in the worst act of US political violence in decades.
The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, also had explosives in his car.
"In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United," Trump said in a statement on his Truth Social network, adding that Americans should not allow "Evil to win."
The Republican added that it was "God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening" and that he would "FEAR NOT."
Trump's wife Melania said the gunman was a "monster," who had attempted to silence her husband's "laughter, ingenuity, love of music, and inspiration."
Donald Trump later said he will travel on Sunday (July 15) to Milwaukee for Republican convention.
