Woman weighing 50 kilos gets fat loss surgery, becomes infertile

Weight loss

A young Chinese woman, in her quest to lose weight, has been left permanently infertile. What's shocking is that the woman opted for fat reduction surgery even though she weighed only 50 kg, SCMP reported. Twenty-five-year-old Mei wasn't happy with the way her body looked. She was particularly concerned about the fat on her stomach, which she was finding hard to lose.

So she chose to undergo liposuction. As per the Hangzhou City Express, Mei underwent the surgery at the Shulan Hangzhou Hospital in Zhejiang province. A doctor from the reproductive medicine department at the hospital, Zhong Chao, told the publication about Mei's intention to lose weight. She told the doctors that she had tried many ways to lose the tummy fat but had failed.

Mei also told them that she was “too much of a perfectionist to allow a little fat on her belly”.

The nightmare unfolded after the surgery. Her menstrual cycles stopped, and she grew worried. She went back to the hospital to get herself checked. Dr Zhong found that Mei’s ovaries had atrophied and she would no longer be able to bear children.

This happened because she was left with too little fat around her waist which experts say is necessary to protect the uterus and ovaries. Chen Shihong, a doctor at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, told SCMP that a “little belly” is normal for women.

In Mei's case, a decrease in body fat also brought down her oestrogen levels, the female sex hormone, and this led to ovarian dysfunction.

Experts warn youngsters against following social media trends that push extreme weight loss on youngsters. Ant waist, chopsticks legs, and palm face are some such trends which portray skinny body as the best. Since everyone's body is different, these trends tend to inflict a lot of harm on an individual.

Mei's weight loss tactic has left netizens unimpressed. They have slammed her for prioritising appearance over her health. “It is more important to stay healthy than skinny,” one user on Weibo said.

Previous fat removal surgery horrors

This is not the first time that such an incident has been reported from China. In 2021, a 33-year-old influencer died after getting stomach liposuction and breast augmentation surgery.

She suffered from multiple organ failure after contracting necrotising fasciitis, a bacterial infection, that destroyed her tissues. The clinic removed more than 2,000ml fat from her body, the upper limit set by the state health authority. Later, a 43-year-old mother of three died of a cardiac arrest following fat removal surgery.
