The Global Times said: "Maldives has neither big strategic expectations, nor can it become a strategic pivot of China in the region,"
China's state-run newspaper Global Times said today that if India wants to improve relations with neighbouring countries to "weaken" China's influence in South Asia, the best way is to "compete economically" with it.
China had recently warned against military intervention in the Maldives even as former president Nasheed requested India's help.
The Global Times, however, said India "must abide by international law" and respect the "sovereign rights" of its neighbouring countries.
"Maldives has joined the China-proposed Belt and Road initiative(OBOR), approved a free trade agreement with China and cooperated with Beijing on island development. These were seen as "pro-China and anti-India" gestures," the newspaper said in its op-ed page.
The Maldives president Abdulla Yameen recently visited China and reaffirmed his country's ties with China. The president has also received support from the Saudi Arabia as he imposed the 15-day emergency on Monday.
However, the Global Times said: "Maldives has neither big strategic expectations, nor can it become a strategic pivot of China in the region," adding that "Maldives is striving for better livelihood for its people amid wrangling among big powers,"
