The doctor who examined former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, after he complained of chest pain, has had a heart attack.
Dr Ejaz Qadeer of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) was hospitalised Sunday night, Pakistani media reports said. Qadeer is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital’s cardiac unit, the reports quoted sources in PIMS as saying.
Qadeer was heading the five-member medical team that examined Sharif in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Sharif had complained of pain in his arms and chest. An ECG conducted on him found irregularities, as also reportedly blood clots.
The medical team then recommended that Sharif be shifted immediately to PIMS in Islamabad. The transfer took place Sunday night.
Sharif has had a long history of heart trouble — he has already had one bypass surgery — as also diabetes and cholesterol.
The sources in PIMS said Qadeer too suffers from heart disease. That he has had a heart attack in the past, and has been fitted with two stents.
