Modi invites Sri Lanka's Wickremesinghe, Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina for oath-taking ceremony

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to attend his swearing-in ceremony scheduled onSaturday (June 8). Wickremesinghe and Hasina both accepted the invitation extended by PM Modi.
Following the announcement of the election results of India's 18th Lok Sabha elections on June 4 that Modi-led NDA won, the prime minister will continue as the caretaker PM until the new government is sworn in.
Indian President DroupadiMurmu accepted PM Modi's resignation ahead of his swearing-in ceremony.
In a phone call on June 5, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe had congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the BJP-led NDA's electoral triumph.

PM Modi thanked President Wickremesinghe by writing, "Thank you for your call and warm wishes, President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Sri Lanka is an important partner in our Neighbourhood First policy. India is proud to be a dependable partner for Sri Lanka. I look forward to realising our joint vision of enhancing connectivity in all its dimensions."
PM Modi also extended an invitation to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following their telephonic conversation.
2014, 2019 invitations
During PM Modi's 2014 oath ceremony, all SAARC heads of state were invited. In 2019, alongside Mauritius and Kyrgyzstan, all BIMSTEC countries were invited.Previously, President Wickremesinghe visited India on July 21, 2023, at the invitation of PM Modi. This visit, Wickremesinghe's first since taking office, included meetings with President Droupadi Murmu and discussions with other Indian dignitaries on a range of bilateral issues.

The visits underscore the importance of Sri Lanka and Bangladeshas a key partners in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy to strengthen the longstanding friendship.
