Lok Sabha polls: Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh to contest elections as Independent candidate
Khalistani terrorist and Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh is set to contest from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib constituency in the Lok Sabha elections as an Independent candidate, claimed his counsel on Wednesday (Apr 24).
Singh's legal counsel Rajdev Singh Khalsa said that he met the radical Sikh preacher in Dibrugarh prison on Wednesday where he requested him to fight the polls in the interestof 'Khalsa Panth'.
"I met bhai sahab (Amritpal Singh) in Dibrugarh central jail today and during the meeting, I requested bhai sahab that in the interestof 'Khalsa Panth', he should fight elections this time from Khadoor Sahib to become a member of parliament," news agency PTI quoted him as saying.
"Bhai sahab accepted my request in the Panthic interests... He will fight as an Independent candidate," claimed Khalsa.
However, the Khalistani separatist's father Tarsem Singh stated that he would comment on the reports only after meeting his son, which is due on Thursday, as Singh in the past had never exhibited an inclination towards joining politics.

Charges against Amritpal Singh
The head of the 'Waris Punjab De' outfit was arrested in April 2023. He along with nine others were detained under the stringent National Security Act (NSA).
They are all currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail.
Singh, who went by the name of slain Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was apprehended after almost a month-long manhunt in Moga's Rode village in April last year.
The Khalistan supporter, in March 2023, had managed to escape police in the Jalandhar district by changing appearances and switching vehicles.
The Punjab Police had last year launched the crackdown following the incident where Amritpal Singh and his supporters, some of whom were armed with swords and guns, broke past barricades and stormed into the police station located on the outskirts of Amritsar city.
They engaged in a skirmish with police to free one of Singh's aides Lovepreet Singh Toofan.
He along with his associates were detained under multiple criminal cases, including attempts to murder, attacks on police personnel, spreading disharmony among classes and also creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.
