India's top court seeks reply from ED on Arvind Kejriwal's plea against arrest in money laundering case

Indian Supreme Court on Monday (Apr 15) asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to file its response on a plea by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging his arrest and subsequent remand in a money-laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam.
The Court has asked the law enforcement agency to file the response by April 24 and the matter would be heard in the week commencing April 29.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who is appearing for Kejriwal, has told India's top court that the arrest was made to prevent him from campaigning for the upcoming Lok Sabha Election.
Last week, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) received a major setback when the Delhi High Court dismissed Kejriwal's plea challenging his arrest.
The HC had said that the material collected by the ED revealed that Kejriwal conspired and was involved in the formulation of excise policy and used proceeds of crime. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said this Court does not consider the issues of political parties, but of investigating agencies.

The court hadnoted that Kejriwal wasallegedly involved in personal capacity in the formulation of policy and demanding kickbacks as the national convenor of the AAP.
Kejriwal had challenged the Delhi High Court order that had upheld his arrest in the case. Hearing the case,a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta issued notice to the ED.
Kejriwal's custody extended
Also on Monday, Delhi's Rouse Avenue court extended Kejriwal's judicial custody till April 23. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met Kejriwal in Tihar jail Monday and alleged he was being treated like a terrorist.
AAP party said its government in Delhi will start functioning from jail under a "proper format" with the chief minister planning to meet two ministers next week.

What's the case?
The case involves alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and execution of the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22. The policy was later scrapped.
The Delhi government had implemented the policy on November 17, 2021. But it was scrapped at the end of September 2022. Corruption allegations were levelled against the party, which AAP denies.
Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21, hours after the high court refused to grant him protection from coercive action by the federal anti-money laundering agency.
