Prime Minister Narendra Modi today slammed the Congress party for its role in the Emergency imposed in 1975 on the 43rd anniversary of the "dark event".
While addressing a party event on Emergency in Mumbai, the PMsaid, "the country turned into a big jail during Emergency".
PM Modi said that the BJP was marking the day when the "Congressstifled democracy."
He hit out at the then prime minister Indira Gandhi by saying that she was "drunk on power"and was an "arrogant leader".
He said, "Indira Gandhi was an arrogant leader and she threatened democracy".
The Indian prime minister said,"Congress put democracy atrisk. India's judiciary was subjugated during Emergency".
He added that, "the Congress party serves only a specific family. The party which has no internal democracy and cannot be expected to follow the ideals of a democracy".
"Constitution was misused during the Emergency," he added.
Referring to the recent impeachment motion moved by the Congress against the Chief Justice of India he said the party was following the same mentality.
The PMsaid, "We are not observing Black Day(Emergency) just to criticise the Congress, we want to make the youth of today aware of what happened. Youth today do not have an idea of what happened during Emergency. They never imagined that corruption charge could be framed against them in court and they would have to seek bail. So now they are trying to scare the judiciary by bringing the impeachment motion. Their mentality now is the same as it was during Emergency."
"The country never thought that just for lust for power and servility to one family, India would be made into one big jail. Every person lived in fear. The people who trampled upon the Constitution, jailed the country's democracy, are today spreading fear that Modi will interfere in the Constitution". he said.
Earlier in a tweet, the Prime Ministerremembered the "dark period" ofEmergency imposed by Indira Gandhi.
"India remembers the Emergency as a dark period during which every institution wassubverted and an atmosphere of fearwas created," the PM said in a tweet.
