Don't forget you are officials of the court, your job is to comply with orders: Supreme Court to NRC coordinator

Supreme Court today warned the Registrar General of India(RGI) and Assam National Register of Citizens(NRC) coordinator for talking to media on modalities of addressing complaints.

Referring to news reports, India's apex court told the RGI and NRC coordinator: "Don't forget you are officials of thecourt, your job is to comply with orders, how can you go to the press like this."

The top court restrained the Assam NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela and RGI's S Shailesh from talking to media on NRC.

The court said the Assam NRC coordinator and RGI will have to seek leave before speaking to the media on NRC in the future.

Earlier Prateek Hajela, state coordinator of NRC had said that those people who didn't find their names in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft will not be "jailed or deported".

The NRC coordinator had further added that "no legal action" would be taken against people whose name are not in the list.

On July 30th, the Assam government had published the draft NRC in which 40 lakh names were missing leading to a major controversy. Several political parties including the TMC openly protested against the Central government questioning itsdraft report in Parliament.

The draft incorporated names of 2.89 crore people out of 3.29 crore applicants.
