After Wayanad disaster, IMD issues landslide warning for Karnataka, predicts heavy rain
Red alert for rain in five Karnataka districtss
Amid deadly landslides in India's southern state of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of similar conditions in the state of Karnataka. The weather department issued a red alert for heavy rains in Karnataka's five districts on Wednesday (Jul 31). The five districts are: Shivamogga, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu.
Additionally, the IMD has warned of potential landslide conditions in 31 sub-divisions in the southern Indian state.
Acting upon the IMD warning, the district administration in Dakshina Kannada announced a holiday for all education institutions for July 31.
An orange alert has also been issued for two districts in Karnataka district: Uttara Kannada, Hassan, and a yellow alert in Belagavi.
Earlier, heavy rains lashed parts of Karnataka on Tuesday, causing water-logging and flooding in several areas. Some houses in the Dakshina Kannada district got submerged due to the overflowing of the Netravathi River.
Rescue operations were underway in the area and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire brigade teams were deployed to help the victims.

Over the last two months, at least five people have died in the district due to heavy rains and ensuing flooding, with at least 106 houses getting destroyed.
At least 100 people are currently seeking shelters in safer places or relatives' places.
Wayanad landslides
On Tuesday, landslides in the Wayanad district of Kerala swept away homes, and villages, and killed over 100 people, while hundreds remain trapped under debris, heightening fears of increasing fatalities.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi urged the Indian government to provide support, and medical care and compensate the families of the deceased.
According to officials, nearly 350 families reside in the affected region and 250 people have been rescued. Kerala government has declared official mourning in the state on Tuesday and Wednesday (July 31).
