After CWC meet, Congress says it deported more Bangladeshis than BJP

The Congress seemed to changed tack on the issue of Assam's National Register of Citizens after the meeting of the Congress Working Committee on Saturday.
Senior Congress leaders had so far been ambivalent about the mammoth exercise that aims to detect illegal Bangladesh immigrants living in Assam, but on Saturday the Congress took a dramatically different stand saying the party had done a better job of deporting Bangladeshis than the BJP.
“We deported 82,728 illegal immigrants between 2005-2013 whereas BJP only deported 1,822 in the last 4 years,” Randeep Surjewala, chairman of the Congress Media Cell, said.

The Congress said the NRC is a product of the Assam Accord which had been forged by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in the 1980's. The Congress added that 25,000 enumerators had been employed under the previous Tarun Gogoi-led Congress state goverment and 80 percent of the (NRC) process completed then.
The Congress also said that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had provided Rs 440 crores to employ enumerators to carry out the NRC. And it said that the BJP is trying to politicise the issue for electoral benefit.

Surjewala added that the Congress would help people who find themselves off the list. (The second draft of the NRC has left 40 lakh Assamese residents out.) “Every person should get a chance to prove his citizenship,” said Surjewala.
Saturday's CWC also focused on three other issues.
Sources in the CWC said the Congress has decided to push the Rafale deal as a major issue for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. For this reason, the CWC had a detailed discussion on the Rafale deal, the recent bank scams, farmers' distress, and the economy, blaming the downturn on decisions taken by the Narendra Modi government.
Congress leaders made it amply clear that with these issues on the table, it was going into election mode. The party said it would launch campaigns around these issues very soon, and that the Rafale deal would lie at the heart of them.
The Congress wishes to project Rafale as a case of corruption and crony capitalism.
Rahul says CWC to meet more frequently
Congress President Rahul Gandhi made it clear on Saturday that the CWC (the party’s apex body) will be meeting more frequently to discuss issues of national importance.
The CWC held on Saturday was the second in the last 10 days. This is a big departure from Sonia Gandhi’s years when the CWC met infrequently and was not used as a regular platform for policy discussions.
