On its 11th day at the Indian box office, Tumbbad has achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing Ghilli to become the highest-grossing film in India during its re-release. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and featuring Sohum Shah, Tumbbad initially underperformed in theatres but has made a stunning comeback.
Following its second weekend, the film's re-release has generated over Rs 20 crore (Rs 200 million). It now holds the title for the highest-grossing re-release in the country, overtaking Ghilli, which was a massive hit when it was re-released in the mid-2000s.
With a total net collection of Rs 33 crore (Rs 330 million) and strong performance continuing into its second week, Tumbbad is on track to potentially reach a final total of around Rs 45 crore (Rs 450 million). The filmmakers are also exploring a broader international release, which could further enhance the film’s success.
Originally earning Rs 12 crore during its initial run in 2018, the fact that Tumbbad has more than doubled its lifetime earnings in this re-release is a testament to its enduring appeal. This scenario exemplifies a film that was truly ahead of its time.
This resurgence has not only changed perceptions but also heightened anticipation for a sequel, which is likely to attract significant interest and investment.
The top-grossing re-releases in India showcase a diverse array of films and impressive earnings. Leading the list is Tumbbad, which has grossed Rs 26.5 crore in just 10 days, tying with the iconic Ghilli, also at Rs 26.5 crore (Rs 265 million). Following closely is Titanic, with Rs 18 crore, while Sholay 3D has garnered Rs 13 crore (Rs 130 million). The romantic drama Laila Majnu collected Rs 11.5 crore (Rs 115 million) over 45 days, matching the earnings of Rockstar, which also reached Rs 11.5 crore. Lastly, Avatar rounds out the list with a total of Rs 10 crore (Rs 100 million).
Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and creatively guided by Anand Gandhi, Tumbbad has captivated audiences with its unique blend of horror and fantasy, coupled with exceptional visual storytelling. The film's re-release, presented by Eros International and Aanand L Rai, has reignited interest and enthusiasm among viewers, demonstrating its lasting impact and relevance.
The film’s success is particularly notable because it achieved these historic numbers without any availability on OTT platforms. The exclusive theatrical run has generated significant buzz and enthusiastic support, underscoring the importance of experiencing classic films on the big screen where their full artistic and emotional impact can be fully appreciated.
