It was an evening of mixed fortunes for Mumbai Indians’ batter Ishan Kishan after he was offered a reality-check by Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) Mitchell Starc in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) on Friday (May 3). Chasing 170 runsIshandid make a good start but was quickly brought down to earthhavingscored a six off Starc’s bowling. His wicket at the Wankhede Stadium saw the crowd go silent as the home side’s desperation for a win continued.

Ishan gets reality-check

Coming out to bat to chase 170, Ishan took the attack to Starc and hit a six on the leg side on the third ball of the second over.While this made the crowdecstatic, it was the next delivery thatbrought everyone back to square one.In desperation for another six, Starc’s delivery caught Ishan by surprise as he failed to judge the flight andwas bowled outon 13 off 7. The wicket in the second over was enough for the crowd to go silentwiththem having little joy throughout the season.

After the wicket, Mumbai never recovered and slumped to their latest defeat in the IPL 2024. Suryakumar Yadav did resist with a 56 off 34balls,but could not avoid his side’s eighth defeat of the season. Tim David scored 24 off 20 but did not get a good helping hand as the hosts suffered their first defeat to KKR on home ground in 12 years. The 24-run win for KKR also helped themstay firm in second place in the IPL 2024 standings.

Mitchell Starc ended withfigures of33/4 in 3.5 overswhileVarun Chakaravarthy, Sunil Narine and Andre Russellendedwith two wickets each.

KKR are next in action on Sunday (May 5) when they face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)whoare also battling hard for a place in the Playoffs. WhileMI are out of the playoff race as they could only attain a maximum of 12 points, which now mathematically sees their hopes come to an end. They next face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium and will play for pride in their remaining three matches.
