Tensions escalated at Pakistan’s Sarhad University’s Rawat campus near Islamabad after a confrontation between students and a security officer reportedly turned violent, with the officer allegedly opening fire into the air. The incident sparked protests on campus, with students objecting to the security personnel’s alleged use of force during the altercation.
The confrontation reportedly began after a security officer allegedly assaulted a student with a stick. The situation later escalated when the uniformed officer reportedly drew a pistol and fired shots into the air, triggering panic among students.
Police were reportedly called to the campus following the incident, while the security officer was taken into custody as authorities began an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the firing. A heavy police contingent was also sought amid concerns that tensions could escalate further.
Students have also alleged that a female student was manhandled during the confrontation and accused the security personnel of pulling her scarf and slapping her.
“They are saying that we cannot lodge an FIR against them,” a university student said, News18 reported, alleging that a male officer had pulled the girl’s scarf and misbehaved with her in broad daylight. “Why can’t we lodge an FIR? When a girl’s dignity is not safe, I am not lying,” the student added.

The student further questioned whether such conduct amounted to protecting students’ dignity and urged others to raise their voice against the alleged incident. Authorities have reportedly assured students that disciplinary action will be taken if the officer is found responsible for misconduct or violating established security procedures.
