Watch: US VP Kamala Harris slammed for using ‘cringe fake accent’ during Michigan campaign

US VP and presidential hopeful Kamala Harris on Monday (Sep 2) sparked an online debate as she was accused of using a “fake accent” in her remarks to teachers’ union members in Michigan. The Democratic presidential nominee appeared at a Detroit high school and was heard speaking with an inconsistency in her tone as she spoke to the crowd.
“You may not be a union member but you better thank a union member for the five-day work week. You better thank a union member for sick leave. You better thank a union member for paid leave. You better thank a union member for vacation time,” The VP can be heard saying in clips being shared on social media platform X.
Interestingly, when Harris gave a similar speech hours later in Pittsburgh, the accent was not there, as alleged by the Donald Trump campaign, her Republican rival.

“Let’s see if you can spot the difference…” read a post on the Trump campaign’s X account, which included video clips from both speeches.
The apparent accent modulation didn’t go down well with comedian and podcast host Chad Prather, who dubbed the video “SO CRINGE.”

“Kamala Harris has again brought out her FAKE accent…this time in Detroit, Michigan!” he observed. “NO ONE IS BUYING IT!” Prather wrote on X.
Meanwhile, Republican communications strategist Matt Whitlock stated that “all of politics is a performance to Kamala Harris.”
“She changes fake accents like she changes policy positions and political personas,” Whitlock wrote on X. “Today she’s talking in a fake southern accent, pretending to be a moderate. Next week she’ll be back to San Francisco liberal.”
The VP was delivering speeches on Labor Day, where she spent the day talking to union members.

“At some point, Kamala's going to speak in England and adopt a full-on British accent and everyone will pretend like it's totally normal,” Ian wrote.
