
The presidential election in the United States (US) is just a few days away. The top contenders in the November 5 election are Donald Trump (Republican Party) and Kamala Harris (Democratic Party).
Voters across the country are gearing up to vote for their preferred candidate who will lead the country for the next four years. Millions of voters have already cast their ballotearly, both by mail and in person.
In the run-up to election day,a question arises- can American citizens who do not have a permanent address be allowed to vote?
According to vote.gov, American citizens do not require a home or a permanent address to cast their vote in elections.
"If you are a homeless service provider, the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness has more resources for helping people vote," the website states.
>Each state and territory has its own voter ID (identification)rules. You may not need an ID to register to vote, but in most states, you must bring identification to vote in person.
> In case you do not have an ID, you can get it at your state motor vehicle office, even if you do not drive. You may need to pay to get an ID card, but some organisations may be able to help you pay the ID fee. Some states also offer ID cards for free or at a reduced cost for unhoused people.

> You need to provide a mailing address so your state can send you important voting information by mail. The mailing address does not have to be a fixed home address. If you do not have a fixed home address to get mail, you can use a different address as your mailing address.
> According to the government, some examples of a mailing address are- a nearby shelter if you don't live there, a nearby religious centre, and the home address of a family member who lives nearby.
> If you're homeless or do not have a permanent address, youcan use a description of the place where you live or sleep as your home address, such as a park or the intersections of street corners.
> However, this description cannot be used as your mailing address.
If you move after you have registered to vote, make sure to call or visityour local election office to update both your home and mailing address.
Many states allow you to update your address on your state’s election website. You can also call or visit your local election office to update your address. After you update your address, you can vote in elections in your new location, the government says.
In some states, you must live at your address for a certain number of days before you can register to vote there.
