
A court in Russia on Monday (Oct 7) sentenced a 72-year-old man from the United States (US) to nearly seven years in prison for allegedly fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the man was identified asStephen Hubbard.
On Monday, prosecutors said that Hubbard signed a contract with the Ukrainian military after Moscow launched its offensive in late February 2022 and he fought alongside themuntil being captured two months later.
Hubbard was sentenced to six years and 10 months in a general-security prison, the report said. Prosecutors had called for a seven-year sentence in a maximum security prison.
US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Monday that the department had limited information about the case as Moscow refused to grant consular access.
“They have an obligation to provide it and we’re going to continue to press for it. We’re looking at the case very closely and considering our next steps,” Miller said during a press conference.
Hubbard, is the first American known to have been convicted on charges of fighting as a mercenary in the Ukraine war.

The charges against the 72-year-oldcarried a potential sentence of 15 years, but prosecutors asked that his age be taken into account along with his admission of guilt, the Associated Press reported citing Russian media.
