Kamala Harris coconut tree memes are everywhere again. How did they start?

Kamala Harris's campaign is on an upward trajectory

Kamala Harris and the coconut tree meme - what is the story there? It is actually something she said a long time back and netizens have dug it up and brought it back to create a meme fest. In fact, it is so popular that the Democrats are using it to express their support for her.Surprisingly, some people claim that it was the Republican National Committee that actually edited out the coconut tree portion from her speech to make fun of her.

Several people have added a coconut tree emoji next to their X handles to show support for Harris who is almost certain to face off against Donald Trump in the November presidential elections.

The coconut tree is related to something Harris once recounted as she talked about her mother. During an event to advance opportunities for Hispanic Americans last year, Harris was trying to explain that no one is ever just one person but is affected by and affects others around them. She explained to the audience that the initiative being discussed takes everyone into consideration, the young people and also their families, teachers and communities.

She said, "None of us just live in a silo. Everything is in context."

She then recounted her mother saying, "My mother would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, 'I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?' " Harris said, breaking into laughter.

"You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you," she added.

Memes around her speech exploded on the internet soon after. But today, the coconut tree has become a symbol of support for Harris. After Biden's dismal show at the presidential debate this year, people started posting photos of coconut trees to ask Biden to step down and let Harris take on the mantle.

Several people, including some Democrats, once again posted pictures of coconut trees after Biden stepped down.

Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz posted a picture of him climbing a coconut tree, and wrote, “Madam Vice President, we are ready to help”.

One of the users wrote, "YOU THINK THIS RESIGNATION FELL OUT OF A COCONUT TREE."

EMILYs List, an American political action committee (PAC) which works to support the election of Democratic female candidates, added a coconut and a tree to its username in a show of support for Harris.

Did Republicans start the coconut tree meme fest?

One of the X users pointed out that it was actually the Republicans who edited the clip way back to take a dig at Harris. Little did they know that they were creating something that would come to symbolise Harris in a positive light. He wrote, "its extremely funny that the Kamala Harris' viral coconut tree speech which has basically endeared her to a broad swath of the online electorate... ...was originally discovered by the RNC Research account last year and cut as a video to attack her with lmao."

Kamala Harris for president

Harris has the full support of the California delegation, earning enough delegates to become the Democratic party nominee. Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker, made the motion to endorse Harris for president at a virtual meeting of California’s DNC delegation on Monday.

Top Democrats are also rallying behind Harris in their bid to beat Donald Trump. Harris will be in Milwaukee on Tuesday for her first full-fledged campaign event.

According to the Associated Press, Harris already has 2,214 delegates, more than the simple majority needed to bag the nomination on the first ballot.

A virtual nominating process will be held between August 1 and 5 before the national convention scheduled to take place in Chicago on August 19.
