Sanjay Singh

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh asked the Indian government to increase the budget for jails, considering the ongoing arrests. His appeal made the Upper House of the Indian Parliament (Rajya Sabha) burst into laughter, but it was Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar's cheeky response went viral on social media.

During his speech in the Rajya Sabha, Singh said, "I was reading their budget. They have decreased the budget for jails as well. At least increase the budget for jails. You have only allocated Rs 300 crore."

"Now you have sent me to jail, tomorrow you will have to go to jail. Increase the jail budget and fix the jails. You will be next," he added.

Dhankhar called Singh's remarks "emotional". He even asked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jagat Prakash Nadda to consider AAP MP's request.

"He has made a very emotional appeal to increase the jail budget. You should look into it," Dhankhar told Nadda.

Notably, Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in October 2023 in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam. He was granted bail this year in April.

In addition to Singh, the ED also arrested other APP leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and ex-deputy CM Manish Sisodia in the same case.

The Delhi government had implemented the policy on November 17, 2021. But it was scrapped at the end of September 2022. Corruption allegations have been levelled against the party, which AAP denies.

AAP lost all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi.

Singh recently accused the BJP of "messing" with the health of Kejriwal, who is currentlyin Tihar jail. While addressing a press conference, he said that the chief minister's medical report shows that anything can happen to him at any time.

"The BJP is messing with Kejriwal’s health. Initially, they were saying that he is eating sweets and trying to spike his sugar levels but now they are saying that he has reduced his food intake. Why will someone do this and pose a threat to their own life?" Singh said.

"There is a conspiracy to kill Kejriwal," he added.
